to ask how much you'd spend on a self-catering holiday?

Trying to see what is reasonable: If you were looking for a self-catering property in England with two bedrooms, that takes dogs if you have any, that has free wi-fi, free parking, front and back garden, and offers luxury-level amenities, how much would you be prepared to pay for seven nights in high season e.g. school holidays, Christmas, etc? Up to £500? £1,000? More?

What area? That would have a huge impact on price.

Summer holidays 800-1000 but I wouldn’t book if it allowed dogs, even as a dog owner, after staying in a 5* (!) place with dog hairs stuck in every seam & surface edging.

The concept of luxury level is obviously somewhat vague as we all have a different interpretation but I would consider that £1000 is a maximum unless particularly well situated and the amenities included are very good.

Depends where it is

We have just booked a week in a 2 bedroomed airbnb at the beginning of July (so not even school holidays) in inland Somerset and it was £1300.

Prices this year are through the roof because the renters want to make up for lost income, and they basically have a captive audience.

I doubt very much you would get anything nice for even £1000 TBH.

We usually spend £700 - £800.

Considerably more this year. It's a seller's market.

The location is Somerset.

The area makes a massive difference, in a prime spot like St Ives for example I think it could be £2k plus for a week (I wouldn’t pay this btw, but have been looking recently). Northumberland, way way less.

Oh sorry, Somerset you say - big county, whereabouts?

SummerSazz · 13/04/2021 18:17

We've paid about £1.3k for a week in a 2 bed which allows dogs - Devon mid August

I wouldn't call it luxury either but has parking and gardens etc

My normal ceiling would be 1,000 for two bedrooms within walking distance of the seaside but maybe a bit more for a special building or location, and a premium if necessary this year.

Just outside Taunton. It's an old stone cottage, chocolate box pretty. That kind of thing.

What are they asking?

Report
mermaidsariel · 13/04/2021 18:21

For two beds £1000 max. Unless it was really amazing.

Report
mermaidsariel · 13/04/2021 18:22

I would never book anywhere that allows dogs either.

Wouldn't the exact location have a bearing on the price - sea view and walking distance to beach, cafes, restaurants etc would cost more than half a mile inland.

Is it a pretty cottage or a nondescript terrace at the back of a housing estate?

I think you are looking at £1500+ in a popular tourist area.

I haven't booked a UK holiday in years, as its eye-watering expensive

I've paid 2 grand before I think. But I always look for a hot tub or pool and a secure garden. Peaves me off when they say they have a garden but there's no fence on one side or the fence is that barely there farmy type fence that a dog can just walk through

You can pay £700 for a caravan at Skegness in high season.

@BarbaraofSeville Very pretty, spacious, very rural but ten minutes from Taunton, the county town of Somerset.

I take it you're the one looking to rent it out?

£1400 maybe for a week

sunflowersandbuttercups · 13/04/2021 18:32

Personally I wouldn't pay more than £700 for a two-bed cottage.

I'm probably not your target market Grin
