Reporting benefit fraud

Have nc'd for this.

Have you ever reported benefit fraud? Would you report covid-19 financial fraud (getting support when not needed and having to lie to do this)?

Sadly worried about karma as we are always told to "not tell tales" but this family have received thousands in help from the government over the last year and have been claiming UC fraudulently as well.

Before anyone asks ... yes we do know the above are facts. Would you even think twice?

Also there is no need for me to be worried about karma as have never claimed anything fraudulently so that feeling has no need to be there, it is just me feeling guilty!

Do it

Karma is tosh but I wouldn't report. I get more incensed by the legal tax avoidance schemes available to the rich.

Why wouldn’t you?

Right, so legal ways to save money are bad. Illegal theft is ok? What other illegal activities do you place above legal ones?

Just out of interest why wouldn't you do it for this? I am having the same dilemma so interested to know!
Also I agree totally about the legal tax avoidance schemes and that needs sorting too.

Are they on furlough and getting UC simultaneously?

Depending on how much the furlough is and their circumstances isn’t it possible to get both?

Eh, usually work 30hrs on minimum wage and claim UC, during furlough receive the same?

If you are absolutely sure you can keep a straight face if they ask you directly if it was you then yes report.

Unless you think they might be part of the criminal underworld and have connections

No. I keep well out of other peoples lives.

I know of people who have been entitled to claim grants whilst also UC. The reasoning is that the UC is the money they are expected to live on and the grant was a payment for loss of income/earnings which happened previously.

Are you sure they are committed fraud?

OP - I'm not condoning benefit fraud but the thought of reporting these people is clearly causing you anguish so why put yourself through this? It will be a tiny amount of the UK's welfare budget.

How are you 100% sure they’re doing it fraudulently?

I claim tax credits and the highest rates of PIP and don’t look or appear disabled but I am. This is why people like me don’t tell anyone.

If this family are from a very dodgy background then no. Don't do it. If they find out it was you they may cause trouble e.g. torch your car or intimidate you. Worst case scenario of course but does need bearing in mind.

How are you 100% sure?

You may think you know the full story but do you?? I highly doubt people committing fraud are going to shout it from the roof tops?

I would. It will be investigated and if they are legit it won't go any further. If they are claiming things they shouldn't they will have to deal with the consequences.

I couldn't actually remain friends with someone committing benefit fraud as I would have no respect for them. So I'd need to know one way or another. They need never know it was you that raised concerns. If they are committing fraud they only have themselves to blame.

How can you be 100% sure it's true, have you seen bank statements?

If they are legit their benefits may stop while they are investigated, which may put them into poverty or severe hardship. We don’t know what the story is here but it’s not the case that it won’t cause severe disruption to their lives if someone reports them.
