Airbnb owner wants proof of vaccination

OH and I are due to go away on Monday as restrictions ease. We booked an air bnb several weeks ago when Boris announced the road map and all was fine.

Yesterday the owner emailed me to ask me to send her proof of our vaccinations.

We haven't had it. I'm 40, OH is 35 and it hasn't been our turn yet.

When I told her she responded saying she was going to cancel the booking.

We will get a refund but AIBU to be really pissed off! There was no mention of any vaccination requirement when we booked, it's not our faut we haven't been vaccinated and now we have to find a new holiday home with two days to spare.

I haven't had a week off work since 2019 and I'm just fed up.

@lorca

And again Hmm No one knows how long the vaccine is effective for. If they are really going to go for vaccination passports, the vaccine MAY WELL have to be within 6 months or maybe even within 4.

So all those vaccinated in Jan/Feb/March and going away in October, may have to have it all again, or your 'passport' is out of date. We may al need vaccinating every 4 months.

It's a stupid, discriminatory idea.

This is what I have been wondering.

If everyone say needs a vaccination every 6 months, at what point has the immunity already run out? 2 months? 5 months?
And does it vary, individual by individual?
Does it vary if someone has had covid with symptoms?
Does it vary if you have had covid , but with no symptoms?
Does it vary according to something else not realised or discovered yet?
Does it vary if you have had it on a wednesday? Hmm [joke] Smile

I've just had my first vaccine im glad im not working and the kids are off school I feel knocked sideways by it if they say I've got to have it every 4/6months I might just cry im scared of needles but trying to do the "right thing"

AnnaBegins · 10/04/2021 13:33

Do message Airbnb customer service, they are genuinely lovely and will make a note against her name for if she pulls this stunt in future. When I had something similar happen (last minute cancellation by host for spurious reasons) they added some credit to my account so I could book a better apartment! They need to protect their reputation so like to know about hosts like this.

blueangel19 · 10/04/2021 13:47

Honestly what a disgrace! Make sure you leave a review on airbandb about this.

TheMotherlode · 10/04/2021 13:50

I would report this to Airbnb. Refusing to provide a service to someone based on vaccination status at this point is clearly discrimination, probably on several grounds including religion or belief (direct discrimination) and age (indirect discrimination).

00utaSpace · 10/04/2021 13:58

I would not be impressed at the late cancellation

If you have a printer at home the blue card is easy to fake

I've not heard of any hotels requesting proof of vaccination & not all the population has had the opportunity yet

poppycat10 · 10/04/2021 14:50

It’s entirely reasonable to not have unvaccinated people

So many people say this. Do you really not understand that about 40% of the adult population have not been offered the vaccination yet?

poppycat10 · 10/04/2021 14:51

@ddl1

She has the right to ask for such conditions (it's her home) but not at the very last minute: she should have made any such stipulations at the time when you booked. In any case - surely it's only relevant to her if you'd actually be sharing space? Personally, I wouldn't want to stay with a total stranger at close quarters, for what's supposed to be a relaxing holiday, in any case! If you wouldn't be sharing space, then she's going way over the top.
It isn't her home, it must be self-contained accommodation at this point as it's the only accommodation that is allowed to open on Monday.
poppycat10 · 10/04/2021 14:53

The suggested passports also include having had a negative test or having had Covid within the last 6 months

Not sure what difference that makes. I've not had covid and I'm not doing an unpleasant test every few days to make the vaccinated worried well feel "safe"

Devlesko · 10/04/2021 14:54

YABU I'm not having the vaccine, absolutely refusing. I don't expect to be able to book anywhere.
Wait until you have had it and book again, others won't be able to book without proof either.

It is entirely relevant to the person I quoted.

Did you read the OP? There was no mention of this when OP made the booking.
lorca · 10/04/2021 16:52

The suggested passports also include having had a negative test or having had Covid within the last 6 months. - how will you prove that you've 'had covid' in the past 6 months?

I haven't had it - I know only 3 people who have, all minor - but all three just 'suffered' at home, no tests, no treatment, no notification of 'The Authorities'!

Other than a blood test for antibodies (and again, no one knows how long these will be visible for) how will you prove this?

bookworm14 · 10/04/2021 16:59

This is completely mad. Presumably she won’t even be in the house when you’re there, so why on earth should it matter whether you’re vaccinated or not? I swear the pandemic has sent everyone bonkers.

If you've not been tested and diagnosed, you can't definitively know you've had it.
Piglet89 · 10/04/2021 17:09

@ButtonMoony wrong. AirBNB’s Terms and conditions for hosts, I think, combined with the Covid-19 extenuating circumstances for hosts policy.

I would contact AirBNB about this.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 10/04/2021 17:11

YANBU half the population isn't eligible for vaccination yet, I would honestly complain to AirBNB and see if they can assist you to find a new let. I wonder if PPs comment about them realising they can get more for it may be true.

Beeme29 · 10/04/2021 17:13

If it’s their house it’s their rules but I can understand your annoyance op. They will be really limiting their visitors tbh.

It’s not like you’ve been offered the vaccine and declined. You just haven’t been offered it yet so yes it’s a bit crazy.

Could you not find anywhere else last minute op?

Bythemillpond · 10/04/2021 17:16

How do you get a Covid passport just for your negative test results
Why only having had Covid within the last 6 months.

Bythemillpond · 10/04/2021 17:18

Why would you need one if so many people have been vaccinated so the numbers who could get it and pass it on are so low anyway

TatianaBis · 10/04/2021 17:22

You can’t make your rules after the guests have accepted the rental agreement. The host is legally bound by the terms agreed to.

She can cancel but she should get in trouble with Airbnb.

As someone who rents properties as a business what I find strange about the whole thing is that - Airbnb/VRBO etc - you have to sign up to advanced cleaning. My house managers follow Covid protocols on cleaning defined by European bodies etc, and the cleaners have to wear full PPE kit. Ie you are cleaning as every guest had Covid. Also invested in steam cleaners. If host is concerned she could have left several days between lets, which some have done.

Many Europeans have not been vaxxed yet.

It’s not very likely given the timeframe that she will find someone else, so I doubt it’s so she can put her prices up.

May just be an inexperienced host.

TatianaBis · 10/04/2021 17:23

🤦🏻‍♀️

Your negative test results is the "passport"

Because no one is sure how long the antibodies from a Covid infection last.

Given these "passports" don't actually exist , trying to pick holes in what the news reports say might be the case is pretty pointless.

blubberyboo · 10/04/2021 21:39

I would give her a bad review and state why and what you were due to pay

It might make others think twice if she’s charging them more

EasterIssland · 10/04/2021 21:40

If you don’t Stay in the house I believe you can’t leave a review. It’ll say the host cancelled the reservation
