Airbnb owner wants proof of vaccination

OH and I are due to go away on Monday as restrictions ease. We booked an air bnb several weeks ago when Boris announced the road map and all was fine.

Yesterday the owner emailed me to ask me to send her proof of our vaccinations.

We haven't had it. I'm 40, OH is 35 and it hasn't been our turn yet.

When I told her she responded saying she was going to cancel the booking.

We will get a refund but AIBU to be really pissed off! There was no mention of any vaccination requirement when we booked, it's not our faut we haven't been vaccinated and now we have to find a new holiday home with two days to spare.

I haven't had a week off work since 2019 and I'm just fed up.

OP posts:

@fairydustandpixies

I'm 49 and have had my first vaccination but have no proof of it. I wasn't given a certificate or anything. Sounds like they're going to lose a lot of money cancelling bookings with that approach.
Certainly does I would’ve thought after such a lean year they’d be glad for any bookings
Wandamakestoast · 10/04/2021 10:23

YANBU OP that’s very frustrating she has made up this rule at the last minute.
We have an Air BnB booking for next week so that we can visit my elderly mum in her garden.

I’ve read all the rules and planned the trip very carefully. We are paying a hefty cleaning fee and have to pack up early on the day we leave so it can be deep cleaned. Which is all to be expected. I’d be really annoyed if the owner changed the booking requirements at this point, it’s not fair on you.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 10/04/2021 10:24

It’s entirely reasonable to not have unvaccinated people

No it’s not. It’s a holiday house, she is not going to be in contact with them. If she’s at extra risk, she’ll have been vaccinated. People who have been vaccinated who are so irrationally fearful of the unvaccinated are the ones who should be staying away from society for a bit longer, not those who by virtue of their age just haven’t been able to have it yet. I really disagree with vaccine passports as a way to make the vaccinated section of the population “feel” safer at the expense of those who haven’t been offered it yet.

PinkiOcelot · 10/04/2021 10:24

That is absolutely ridiculous. Unless of course you are living under the same roof as her. I would definitely contact air bnb and let them know.
She’s probably going to try to inflate the prices for other unsuspecting guests.

Troyhelena · 10/04/2021 10:25

Yanbu

Starisnotanumber · 10/04/2021 10:27

E mail her back tell her you respect her conditions and you have found somewhere else.
Then tell her that a couple of fully vaccinated friends are looking for a place and you don't want her to loose money so can they take over your booking.
See what happens then

Theunamedcat · 10/04/2021 10:30

Really?????

Lulu1919 · 10/04/2021 10:31

Could you do LFT tests ?

Theunamedcat · 10/04/2021 10:31

OK thst was totally without context I meant to say nhs app? You can just download your vaccine info? Really?

I'm unreasonably excited about this

Reinventinganna · 10/04/2021 10:32

If they do readvertise at a higher price and still don’t mention that they want only vaccinated people I would complain.

oakleaffy · 10/04/2021 10:32

Couple I know hired a hotel room for two nights last week {England} and it was fine.
Way too young for vaccines. Just hire somewhere else.

Abraxan · 10/04/2021 10:33

@Zampa

You get given a card with details of your vaccination and the date. You're meant to carry it with you in case you have any problems

I didn't get a card (or a sticker Sad). I have no proof at all.

If you do want evidence (or yourself) and you are in England:

Download the nhs app.
The details should be in there.
Mine were updated pretty quickly, as were DH's.

Bythemillpond · 10/04/2021 10:36

I wouldn’t be surprised that she wants to relish it at a higher price

We use Airbnb a lot and want to go away and currently the cheapest place for what we want which is later on in the year and out of school holidays is £200 per night when we usually pay only £70.
Atm it is a rip off so are waiting till next year to go away and hopefully will be going abroad to somewhere without the restrictions of Covid passports

Abraxan · 10/04/2021 10:37

It's also on my Patient Access app too.

In the Nhs app the vaccine appears under View your GP Health Record - Medicines - Acute

YANBU. She is being ridiculous as so many are unfortunately.

Take your business elsewhere.

grenadines · 10/04/2021 10:49

Vaccination documents don’t exist so no one can ask for one yet. The scrap of paper you get when vaccinated isn’t proof. It also sounds like discrimination to me. I would contact Airbnb and ask them to clarify the situation. I stayed at a hotel recently and all I had to declare was that no one in the party had covid symptoms.

lorca · 10/04/2021 10:52

And again Hmm No one knows how long the vaccine is effective for. If they are really going to go for vaccination passports, the vaccine MAY WELL have to be within 6 months or maybe even within 4.

So all those vaccinated in Jan/Feb/March and going away in October, may have to have it all again, or your 'passport' is out of date. We may al need vaccinating every 4 months.

It's a stupid, discriminatory idea.

oblada · 10/04/2021 10:55

Potentially age discrim as younger people are less likely to be vaccinated. If the room/cottage is self contained then it seems disproportionate. I'd flag it with airbnb/consider a negative review. First I'd tell the host it appears discriminatory and offer negative tests.

peak2021 · 10/04/2021 10:56

I am pleased to read you have found somewhere else OP and hope you enjoy your break.

Even if after you get back, I still think you should complain to Air BnB and also to the trading standards people at the place you would have stayed at. It may help others or even yourself in future.

ballsdeep · 10/04/2021 10:56

@HotChoc10

That's ridiculous. Could you ask if a pair of negative tests would suffice and go to your nearest walk in?
I agree with this, but then I would resent giving my money to someone like this 🤣🤣
dangermouselovespeanutbutter · 10/04/2021 10:58

The shitty thing here is her changing the goalposts two data before and you having your plans ruined! If she only wants vaccinated guests that's here prerogative, but this is not the way to go about it.

DumplingsAndStew · 10/04/2021 11:12

@YouAreYourBestThing

Anyone can download their NHS details using the NHS online app so if you REALLY wanted to get your proof, you could do so 🤷‍♀️

No. Not anyone can. The NHS service more than just England. 🙄
You need to live somewhere and be registered at a practice that have signed up to use this.

🤷🏼‍♀️

intheenddoesitreallymatter · 10/04/2021 11:16

YADNBU!

Isn't this a form of medical discrimination? She cannot ask you questions about your medical history - she is not your doctor. I would report her to Air BnB

masterofthechef · 10/04/2021 11:16

I for one certainly wouldn't be providing proof of my medical status for a covid vaccine or anything else, my right to privacy , funny that in other posts (namechanged) i got totally flamed for being against vaccine passports when i said those unvaccinated for the many reasons, including not being called for the jab yet, would be treated as a second class citizen and refused service.
I would definitely be looking everywhere to see if it offered again for a higher price, or even if the change to T&Cs has been added. If not i would be leaving negative reviews and reporting to AirBNB.
Glad you found somewhere OP-enjoy your holiday
