Airbnb owner wants proof of vaccination

OH and I are due to go away on Monday as restrictions ease. We booked an air bnb several weeks ago when Boris announced the road map and all was fine.

Yesterday the owner emailed me to ask me to send her proof of our vaccinations.

We haven't had it. I'm 40, OH is 35 and it hasn't been our turn yet.

When I told her she responded saying she was going to cancel the booking.

We will get a refund but AIBU to be really pissed off! There was no mention of any vaccination requirement when we booked, it's not our faut we haven't been vaccinated and now we have to find a new holiday home with two days to spare.

I haven't had a week off work since 2019 and I'm just fed up.

This thread is funny. Just because you don't know of a way to access proof you've had the vaccine, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. People haven't even attempted to find out before stating this as fact! As for the poster saying the app was only relevant to a small number of the population as it's only available in England - England makes up over 85% of the Uk population so hardly just a handful of people lol.

As for the age discrimination part. The entire workforce of the NHS, care homes, employed cares, volunteer carers of vulnerable people at home have been vaccinated in their 20's, 30's and 40's so you're probably clutching at straws here too. I can't imagine anyone actually chasing this up for the sake of a couple of days in an air b&b though. Legal advice and court fees made me laugh 😆.

I can see how it's annoying OP and glad you managed to get somewhere else booked. It would be totally fair to leave a factual review of your experience. If the lady is by any chance being honest then presumably she'll state vaccinated people only on her listing and the review won't put off anyone that does fit the bill anyway. If she's at it then it might well put people off and that's her problem. At the end of the day though it's her house and if she's putting health before profits then that's up to her.

Owner is being ridiculous IMHO. Having is vaccination, may not prevent transmission. Perhaps got an higher offer for the accommodation? Who knows. And this is being used as an excuse.

Skysblue · 12/04/2021 09:58

Yanbu that’s really scummy of the owner to add a last minute discrimatory condition.

But I don’t think there’s anything you can do unfortunately. :(

Leave a review to warn others perhaps.

No they haven't. Some NHS staff who are not frontline have still not been offered the vaccine.

Also, NHS staff do not account for the whole population of under 50s in the UK do they? Some people do not work for the NHS you know, so yes, it is quite discriminatory.

@MrsFin

That's odd zamoa. I've had two vaccinations as I'm taking part in a trial. I had the same card, with my name on, as DH and everyone else I know who has had the licensed vaccine.
Not odd at all. I didn't get a card either and quite a few that I know , haven't.

To those saying it’s not discriminatory: there’s a fairly strong argument that, at least at this stage of the UK’s vaccination programme, such a policy is indirect discrimination on the grounds of age.

Indirect discrimination happens when someone implements a practice, policy or rule which applies to everyone in the same way, but it has a worse effect on some people than others. The Equality Act says it puts you at a particular disadvantage.

So, in this case, because the vaccine had, as of the dates of the op’s prospective stay, been offered mainly to people over 50 (and those younger people with underlying health conditions), it could be said to discriminate indirectly against those under 50.

mosgirl · 12/04/2021 18:18

Midnightstar my DH has had both doses of vaccine. It doesn't show on his NHS app. He doesn't have proof.

I am an Air BnB host and I can tell you now that what this person has done is wrong on many levels.

Did she host last year? There were no vaccinations at that point! With an effective cleaning regime there is very little risk anyway.
