AIBU?
To think there’s no need for ‘major news report’ message
Greyrootszerohoots · 09/04/2021 17:58
Getting ready for bed the CBeebies way and ‘Major news report on BBC1’ message keeps being flashed up. Anxiety inducing thoughts of you know, something major that didn’t happen earlier in the day and didn’t involve just one person dying.
I get that it’s big news and people care more than I do, but AIBU to think there’s no need to keep posting this on a kids tv channel?
Am I being unreasonable?

Shame that Peppa Pig has been interrupted but someone’s grandad/father/husband has died. If toddlers question it (not sure why they would), why not just demonstrate how to show compassion in situations like this (no need for it to be ‘anxiety inducing’ for anyone). People’s ability to make a situation all about themselves on Mumsnet never ceases to amaze me. Regardless of who he was, why not just feel sorry for the people who this will actually affect in any significant way (not you or your children).

In addition to the birthdays on CBeebies (do they still do it?) they could have deaths too. Someone's grandad/father/husband dies all the time. It could be a feature.
I don't think there is the need to keep alarming everyone throughout the day.
Maybe when it happened, but late afternoon seems a bit too much.

@Zan58
It's the grandad/father/husband in one family, it's already on every other major channel. I would assume it's anxiety inducing as it's been hours now and constantly flashing up Major News Report might lead people to believe something major has happened.

Shame that Peppa Pig has been interrupted but someone’s grandad/father/husband has died
We have just had a year where countless peoples’ grandads/fathers/husbands have died thanks to the pandemic, and there wasn’t a constant rolling bulletin during kids programming.
Yes it’s sad and people should be respectful, but a 99 year old passing away at home after a long and happy life isn’t in need of a constantly updating ticker on normal programming.

@Zan58 oh I do feel sorry for the many who will be upset by this, and I fully understand that it’s significant news. However it happened earlier in the day - I highly doubt anyone currently watching the clangers lives in a cave.
And I don’t think toddlers are questioning it, but the style of it is very alarmist and I feel that is the unnecessary part. As another commented, a smaller message would suffice.
It’s interesting that it is to encourage you to tune in too. The message could just state that the Duke has passed away.

@cookiecreampie
You’re wrong. Nothing, and I mean nothing has interrupted a song on capital radio before this very announcement.
So forgive me for breathing a sigh of relief when I discovered in my car driving that it was “only” Prince Philip that had died.
VanGoghsDog · 09/04/2021 18:27
@Geamhradh
Where were you when Prince Philip died?
Oh, my Mum was having a tantrum because Peppa Pig was interrupted.

That's going to be a boring conversation though, isn't it? I mean, given lockdown etc, vast majority of people "at home".
TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 09/04/2021 18:28
Oh I totally agree OP
I don’t think it’s respectful to keep flashing it up as a major news alert - just announce it , have it on the 6 and 10 o’clock news, and then it can be discussed in the newspapers tomorrow. I absolutely hate this rolling news culture.
