To think there’s no need for ‘major news report’ message

Getting ready for bed the CBeebies way and ‘Major news report on BBC1’ message keeps being flashed up. Anxiety inducing thoughts of you know, something major that didn’t happen earlier in the day and didn’t involve just one person dying.

I get that it’s big news and people care more than I do, but AIBU to think there’s no need to keep posting this on a kids tv channel?

Wait so it just said "major news event" - or similar wording - without saying what it was, that is major click baity alarmist stuff.

.Of course people are going to think terrorist attack or something, that's irresponsible

BrumBoo · 09/04/2021 20:16

Anyway, off to watch it now!

Good for you. I'm off to watch paint dry. Redoing the living room has had a far more positive impact on my life than old Phil ever did, but each to their own Smile.

ZenNudist · 09/04/2021 20:19

Im not a royalist but like it or not its a major event. They will have activated this across all BBC platforms. It's the national broadcaster and he was the spouse of our monarch.

It's the end of an era and has significance. I don't kniw why people get alarmed by "major news" banner.

Greyrootszerohoots · 09/04/2021 20:20

@Bramblebutter yes, that’s all it said. Very alarmist I thought. Particularly when the vast majority already knew he had died. Especially when we’ve experienced 2k+ a day deaths at points this year. So it must be something really bad! Nope, just same news.

I’m glad others get it, and I’m not being ‘me me me’ as some suggested!

I’ve lived in countries where a major news banner means imminent danger. Not a repeat of news that broke 7 hours earlier.

Because the main times that I remember TV being interrupted for the news is 9/11 and 7/7 so it's not unsurprising that anyone's initial thought is 'oh shot'
mynameiscalypso · 09/04/2021 20:22

Or 'oh shit' even!

Zan58 · 09/04/2021 20:23

People who are saying that nobody they know cares: of course they don’t. You all live in your Mumsnet me-and-my-kids self-obsessed bubble. I don’t know what I’d do if the people I knew IRL were like some of the people on here. Probably have some sort of breakdown.

And yet here you are...

Shopliftersoftheworldunite · 09/04/2021 20:26

@Nanny0gg why is it a major news event though?

Breaking news: extremely elderly old rich old man dies.

Yeah, right.

Zan58 · 09/04/2021 20:30

@Greyrootszerohoots in response to your ‘me me me’ comment - 7 countries? Really? So much better cultured and well-travelled than the rest of us. Especially for someone who can’t locate the off button on the TV and talk to their children instead Hmm

SleepingStandingUp · 09/04/2021 20:32

The only kids who care will be the great grandkids and Edwards two.

As for WWY - Ive only ever been asked about Diana and the Twin Towers. I'm too young for Elvis. I don't think anyone is going to add PP to the list

Zan58 · 09/04/2021 20:33

@Greyrootszerohoots but I don’t know you in real life? Your post is a source of entertainment as opposed to a conversation with a friend or family member?

Sorry, what exactly about this are we mean to care deeply about? Genuinely, he was a rich, quite racist old man who lived a long life of privilege. Everything he did in terms of charity or goodwill only came from that privilege. We pretend that the Royals are some sort of demi-gods that we should be in awe of purely from the chance of their birth. It's really bloody tedious, this brainwashing that we should be sad and respectful of the situation just because he was born into royalty and then married further into it (like he was ever going to do anything else).

The man was not special in his own merit in comparison to most other people. He wasn't extraordinary, he did not come from nothing and changed the world. He was an aristocratic who married very well and had a pretty easy life because of it. So why in earth should we really be so reflective for more than a few moments? The world has moved on from this sort of sycophantic behaviour of idealisation of our 'betters'.

Greyrootszerohoots · 09/04/2021 20:38

@Zan58 who said 7 countries?

Very few of us know one another, but we are all mumsnetters, so you can’t expect to be the only one not in a ‘me and my kids bubble’ the rest of us supposedly are.

I don't get why this a major news event that has to have blanket coverage either...its been announced he has died there will be plenty of obituaries , commemorative retrospects, a state funeral. It doesn't need rolling coverage, its not a developing news story- unless there's a chance he might turn up not dead.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/04/2021 20:46

9/11. 7/7. The Manchester Arena attacks. Paris. I mean just run off the top of my head. You really can't imagine why people might think something REALLY BAD rather than sad happened??

PurpleWh1teGreen · 09/04/2021 20:59

With the best will in the world, however much I feel for his friends and family, once the announcement had been made, that was kind of it.

I know the media have been preparing for decades, but there really isn't much point in Staying tuned for more developments because there aren't any. Even the obituaries feature people who predeceased him.

A politician said this. A celebrity said that. The flags are at half mast & there won't be a state funeral.

Zan58 · 09/04/2021 21:01

@Greyrootszerohoots I don’t think everyone is in that bubble - just people who are ‘me me me’, as you term it. Sorry! Read your post in a rush and missed that the ‘7’ was the number of hours you’d decided was sufficient for the country to hear about the death of the consort of 70+ years, not the number of countries you’d lived in. Makes COMPLETE sense now Grin

Can’t imagine how I’ll feel losing a devoted husband after 70+ years, will cherish every minute until then. Off now to wistfully stare out of a window.

AfternoonToffee · 09/04/2021 21:14

That's the thing it is about how you will feel, me being sad too won't lessen your grief.

Lillyhatesjaz · 09/04/2021 23:39

I think they had to put it on all the tv channels otherwise hardly anyone would have watched it beyond the initial announcement.
I feel sorry for his family and friends who loved him and will miss him, and I can understand why there would be a tribute to him on one channel this evening but personally like many others I am just not particularly interested in the Royal family.

Lweji · 10/04/2021 14:43

You're not alone.

It must be only MNetters complaining, I'm sure.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 10/04/2021 14:46

2 year olds (and 38 year olds Wink) couldn't actually give a fuck about this so why there has to be a breaking news bulletin on a children's tv channel i have no idea.

Well, three threads full of bile about his death and asking people to complain have already been deleted, as I'm sure you know as you are on most of them.
