AIBU?

To think there’s no need for ‘major news report’ message

Getting ready for bed the CBeebies way and ‘Major news report on BBC1’ message keeps being flashed up. Anxiety inducing thoughts of you know, something major that didn’t happen earlier in the day and didn’t involve just one person dying.

I get that it’s big news and people care more than I do, but AIBU to think there’s no need to keep posting this on a kids tv channel?

As sad as it is, the media outlets will be absolutely revelling in this today. It's well known that they rehearse this sort of thing and have the clothes there ready etc. There'll be an odd sort of excitement and sense of importance for all of those working at the BBC today and nobody will want to feel left out.

Literally no one will ask 'where were you when Prince Phillip died' ? it is not a major news event. The Queen dying, maybe - as that will trigger changes to our head of state and all the associated pomp and nonsense that goes along with that. But her husband? Nah.

In a few days time literally no one outside of his immediate family will give a fuck. He was 99 years old and there will be no changes whatsoever to our country now he has died.

Swearing is a bit disrespectful.

it is a major news event - but no, not to the same magnitude as the Monarch passing.

@Greyrootszerohoots well I haven’t, because
I’m not annoyed that someone’s death has interrupted Peppa Pig. I feel sorry for them (and anyone whose brain jumps to themselves and their children when they hear about the misfortune of others - must be a depressing way to live).

@Chillychangchoo

Oh absolutely.
I heard it in my car on the radio and my stomach leaped with anxiety, thinking something absolutely terrible had happened.

Phew, nothing major. A 99 year old has died.

Same here, interrupted R4s audiobook. I thought there had been a huge terror attack.

Oh, I hadn't spotted that you were making a joke. Usually they are funny.

Some require some brain power to be understood and for the reader not to be too pedantic.

Breaking news notifications pop up all the time, not just about people dying. If your heart is leaping in terror every time you get one of these how the hell do you function day to day? Genuine question.

Not on CBeebies - I've literally never seen that and I've endured many hundreds of hours of kids tv over the course of 4 young dc.

I think it’s ridiculous that all programmes have been cancelled for the rest of the day! Is that not what we have 24hours news channels for, so people can catch up whenever they want to. It’s very sad that he’s died, very sad for the Queen and family, but blanket coverage is not really necessary. And totally agree with the messages popping up on cbeebies, I had to check the news as I thought there had been a terrorist attack.

It’s absolutely over the top, especially given that we are still in a pandemic and people’s anxiety is running high. I’ve heard so many people say when BBC1 was interrupted for it this morning they genuinely thought there had been a nuclear bomb or some other huge disaster.
A (very) old man has died after living a long life of extraordinary privilege. He has lived far longer than most people could hope to live for, in broadly good health, never had to go into a care home and be alone, and has died a dignified death. He has never achieved anything extraordinary beyond being at the side of the Queen, he’s not cured cancer, discovered something significant, nor was he particularly beloved by the public when alive.
Yes it is sad for the RF but I really don’t think it warrants this level of hysteria.

I feel sad about Prince Philip but still think the banner was a bit alarming. I think they were trying to be vague to avoid saying "report on prince Philip's death now on" but it looked more like a breaking news something bad has just happened you might want to take the children away and turn over to the news channel NOW! If they had just said there is a report about Prince Philip on BBC One now it would have been a lot less alarming.

It is sad for the family, you can acknowledge that the family will be sad, there doesn't need to be flashing announcements hours after the event.

I agree about the 24 hour news channels - however, it’s not 25 years ago when Diana died, you could watch something on Netflix. Or turn the TV off for the night.

@Zan58 you keep mentioning peppa pig being interrupted. I’ve never watched peppa pig but given the way it is mentioned on here I assume it’s considered low brow.

As I have repeatedly said, I don’t mind the announcement (it’s not an interruption, the programming doesn’t stop and my child is too young to even notice it). It’s the messaging and style for the platform used.

One more time for those hard of hearing die-hard royalist at the back - it’s the messaging, style and platform!

The pontipines are so small that they were almost totally covered by the banner at some points! Poor pontipines.

OP, I just saw this watching the bedtime section of CBeebies ( which does not screen Peppa Pig btw) and when the message came on I too flicked the channel and thought something else had happened on top of the sad death of the Duke. So I don’t think YABU to raise this at all. Also for the record CBeebie does not show Peppa Pig,

Shame that Peppa Pig has been interrupted but someone’s grandad/father/husband has died.

Thousands of grandfathers/fathers/husbands died today. Why make such a ridiculous fuss about this particular one?

All BBC channels have cancelled every programme...what the fuck for? I pay for those channels, I don't give a shiny shit that a hundred year old racist ultra rich git died.

It's way OTT. The first hour, sure. However, I highly doubt there are adults in this country who only have cbeebies on all day long without checking any other media.

Really no need to keep popping the message up. Or for both BBC 1 and 2 simultaneously showing BBC news either to be honest. It's a notable day in our country with no doubt, but this is all ridiculously excess - makes me wonder what will happen when the Queen goes. Much wailing and nashing of teeth? Urgh.

Pepos Pig is shown on Channel 5 and Nick Junior, not the BBC. Yes, I think it’s quite weird to have a giant banner on CBeebies for the DoE’s death. From what I know of him, I’d be surprised if this is something that he would have wanted.
