Union Flag

For once i am shocked into silence, just read that there are calls for Morrisons supermarket to be boycotted because the have products in Union flag packaging. It would seem somewimps people are so pathetic that the feel "intimidated" by our countries flag. FFS what a bloody feeble nation Britain has become, it is not as though we wrap goods in a Swastika. If the Union flag is so scary bugger off and live somewhere else, just make sure their flag is not a naughty one.

@LemonRoses

I think when it appears on bananas or we find British carrots grown in Spain it is truly ridiculous. Can’t abide the jingoistic, flag waving neo-fascism that is evolving. I’d choose products without a union flag plastered all over them.

The flag worship around central government is cringeworthy. Zoom calls plastered in them. The move for them to fly from public buildings is reminiscent of 1933.

I've never seen bananas with a Union Flag sticker. I can't really comment on carrots as I buy them loose but again I rather doubt that there are Spanish carrots with British branding. If there are then I suggest that you take it up with Trading Standards as misleading.

I am amazed that it only took half an hour before Godwin's Law showed up. You really do need to get a sense of perspective.

DdraigGoch · 09/04/2021 18:02
@RampantIvy I’m Scottish.
I buy English/ Welsh/ Irish produce all the time. I even sometimes shop in Morrison’s.
I object to everything being labelled as British. I feel the 4 individual Nations should be represented by their nation’s flag.
I would still buy them though, I just don’t like it as a personal opinion. (When is British asparagus due btw?)
I think that it is only a few weeks before British asparagus is in season.

LubaLuca · 09/04/2021 18:03

some very minimally famous quiz show personality

I object in the strongest possible terms. Anne Hegerty is a quiz legend.

NeverMetANiceOne · 09/04/2021 18:04

OP, when you read stories like this you need to engage your brain a little. It's not real. It's one person making a stupid comment on twatter and then a rag of a 'newspaper' publishing it to rile up idiots who believe everything they read.

FelicityPike · 09/04/2021 18:07

Brilliant, thanks @DdraigGoch I love asparagus.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/04/2021 18:08

I actively look for the flag on fresh produce. Nothing ‘jingoistic’ about it - but I like to support our own farmers, and it makes U.K. produced food easier to spot.

I’ve lived for 13 years in other countries and am very well travelled, and I can’t think of any country whose citizens sneer at their own flag like Brits (though it’s mostly the English) do.
And please, don’t anyone start banging on about empire - other countries had empires too, didn’t behave any better than we did, and don’t endlessly beat themselves up about it.

I think this really encapsulates the difference.

I don't recognise anything along the lines of a 'British' identity and do not accept that the UK is either a 'country' or a 'nation' being as it is nothing more than a unitary political state, so the notion of a 'UK' or 'British' flag is just daft, I feel no affinity with it at all, and all it symbolises to me is everything horrible about Imperialism, subversion, British colonialism, and jingoistic political opportunism, hence why I provokes no feeling in me beyond mild contempt.

LowlandLucky · 09/04/2021 18:14

Why am i angry ? I am angry that people living in this country are intimidated by our flag, i am saddened that British people have no respect for their own country.

caringcarer · 09/04/2021 18:14

I buy British wherever I can. Simply because after this pandemic many are losing jobs and buying British means we keep our own economy going. Britain now has masses more debt so keeping people in jobs is key. Union Jack flag is put on to products so shoppers can see at a glance it was made in UK.

pourqouimoi · 09/04/2021 18:16

If you lived in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you might find the flag has many unwelcome or complex connotations.

MadeOfStarStuff · 09/04/2021 18:18

Are people actually doing this or is it like when Britain first claims people are offended by the poppy and we’re “not allowed” to say merry Christmas?Hmm

As it does in Wales also, the union flag isnt called the butchers apron for nothing
RoseAndRose · 09/04/2021 18:20

As this was reported in main stream media a month ago, I don't think it's garnered much support

Why are you so angry?
I am British. I have a British passport, and am proud to be British. I was born in England but am descended from Scottish and German ancestors.

I live in a rural area and want to support our farmers, and reduce airmiles so I also actively look for the Union flag as well @GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

ghostyslovesheets · 09/04/2021 18:21

respect for your country isn't the same as liking a flag - honestly OP you sound a bit daft

I am British and part of our great tradition is being able to criticise this country and to pick fault with things - it's okay - GB is a big country and can take it - we don;t tend to blindly love every single thing British - especially flag worship and jingoism - but equally we don;t tend to get overly worked up over one persons twitter opion

DynamoKev · 09/04/2021 18:22

@CloudFormations

Have tracked down the real story. Seems like one random Twitter user has expressed a personal opinion - one they are entitled to hold - about a box of porridge, and some very minimally famous quiz show personality responded with a tweet of her own.

I think we can all agree this is something we can find a way to cope with, if we’re extremely stoical.

What on earth makes you think I'm in any way 'angry'? Confused

You consider yourself British, good luck to you. I do not, and never have, because it's not a concept that has any meaning for me, hence why I don't identify with it.

You might as well accuse me of being angry because I don't consider myself Martian.

I live in Scotland and actively seek out and preferentially buy goods with a union flag on the packaging or a “Made in Britain” logo!
It is my country’s flag, and we are all British.
I cannot abide the SNP, their refusal to fly union flags, and their obsession with tearing our country apart. So I take great pleasure in displaying union flagged produce prominently in my trolley.

LadyJaye · 09/04/2021 18:36

@LubaLuca

Did you get bitten by a radioactive Daily Express, op?

Who is boycotting Morrison's because of this? Literally not one person, that's who.

Babdoc · 09/04/2021 18:36

Jurassicperk, to my generation, the union flag represents the democracy and freedom of a brave country who stood alone against the Nazis before the USA belatedly entered the war. Perhaps reflect that your nonsense about “butchers aprons” is centuries out of date.

pourqouimoi · 09/04/2021 18:38

Many people, including myself, are ashamed of our imperialist past and the atrocities committed under the banner of the Union Jack. Perhaps other some countries feel more comfortable with their flags because they live in countries whose flag isn't synonymous with imperialism, racism, exploration and repression half the world over.

ghostyslovesheets · 09/04/2021 18:38

No Babydoc that's what it represent to you - you can not possibly know what it represents to everyone else

pourqouimoi · 09/04/2021 18:39

Some other not other some!

RampantIvy · 09/04/2021 18:39

Why is it called the butcher's apron in Wales?
