To eyeroll at people that hang their political party posters in their windows?

My neighbour...completely normal, late 20s, single mum just put up an SNP poster in her living room window for all her neighbours and passerby's to see. Is there really any need? Must we know the party she supports and who she'll be voting for on May 6th?

When I spotted it (hard to miss, bright yellow) I just cringed and rolled my eyes, I think it's a bit of a display and I'm not sure what the purpose is for.

It’s always Tories who want to keep their voting preferences private. Always. They’re ashamed. As they should be.

moochingtothepub · 08/04/2021 22:50

My neighbours have put up one, but she's the candidate (local independent party)

Yes but why? There's no need for anyone to keep their political views to themselves if they're inclined to share.

Just because you were raised to think one thing, doesn't mean you can't change your mind. Especially if it's nonsensical.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 08/04/2021 22:53

Of course it is. If Sturgeon was to eat a small child live on TV people would still vote for her

'Sturgeon' isn't a political party, and the only people who can 'vote for her' are the electorate in her constituency.

Anyway, keep indulging in your ridiculous hyperbole as a means to vent your impotent frustration that you're an ever diminishing minority in your own country. Once we're independent you might be lucky and get some sort of more appropriate PR system that better represents you.

hellofrommetoyou · 08/04/2021 22:54

Can someone explain what the SNP are planning on doing for women's rights and self ID? I've not heard about this and google isn't bringing up much results. Likewise their policy is limited.

“They’re underfunding the NHS and the local hospital is shutting. Oh, and the bus service isn’t running any more so we can’t get there”.

“Have you tried voting differently next time?”

“Don’t be so uncouth!”

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 08/04/2021 22:56

Follow the overwhelmingly positive response in the public consultation signalling widespread public approval for GRC reform.

Selkiesarereal · 08/04/2021 22:57

I always wondered where these posters came from and then I noticed that the back of the Labour one was and I wondered no more!

Now currently wondering why all the 4 main parties have directly mailed me but not my dh. Must go and check the others for posters as well.

I cannot fathom why you would want to keep your politics private, unless you are a massive racist, a bigot or something else to be ashamed of. If you believe it, you should be able to defend it. Else how else would society progress? Confused

Surely its the exact opposite? Politics is by definition a public activity, engaging in democracy, debate, your community and issues that affect you and others....nothing like sex.

SteveArnottsWaistcoat · 08/04/2021 23:00

I saw someone with a luminous yellow “SNP are da best lol” sticker in their windscreen today. Pure gave me the dry boak.

I suppose at the moment Covid has killed canvassing, so they make as much noise as you can in other ways!

Well shagaholic Johnson hasn't aligned himself to that thinking. .

Nothing uncouth about my car sticker

bakingdemon · 08/04/2021 23:05

My politics are very much a minority in my area (one of the major parties, just not the one that runs my council or is my MP). If I put a poster in my window a brick would probably follow within a few days. It does annoy me a bit when I see other parties' posters up because I'd like to be able to have mine up without being scared to.

WaterBottle123 · 08/04/2021 23:05

Only if they are Tories, then I wonder how they sleep at night

getyourfreakon · 08/04/2021 23:06

I've been past a house with Labour posters in all front facing windows. Flags too. Round here Labour is usually the go to anyway, but not usually signposted so much.

🤣👏🏻🤣👏🏻🤣👏🏻

The notion of keeping one's politics "private"..... I don't even know where to start with that one. But I'd suggest it comes from a particular side of the political divide who want to keep the serfs quiet.

ViviPru · 08/04/2021 23:12

@HollowTalk

I can't remember the last time there was a party I actually wanted to vote for.
Nor can I @HollowTalk.

I thought that’s what this thread might be about - incredulity that anyone could feel so wholeheartedly aligned to any party that they would display a poster thus - as opposed to just feeling obliged to vote for the least awful purely out of respect for those who fought for our right to vote.

AnnieSnap · 08/04/2021 23:14

@user1471453601

We do this. It's our business, not yours, that we choose to do so. The majority of us are card carrying members of a political party, so we do it.
This - we do it to, card carrying lefties, both of us!

I don't think I am voting this time.

Yes. Thinking about it, it’s tricky to protest or come up with radical new ideas if talking about politics is frowned on.

beginningoftheend · 08/04/2021 23:18

@hellofrommetoyou

Hmm each to their own I suppose. I personally just think it's very 'look at me, look at me'.
Confused Grin Of course it is 'look at me' because it is to encourage other people to vote the same way.
XDownwiththissortofthingX · 08/04/2021 23:18

See, I find this 'nobody to vote for' thing extremely odd. Scots politics is not like the bad old days of New Labour when you could barely get a cigarette paper between the two main parties. There are at least two parties that I would happily give my Constituency vote to right now, four if the others would simply adopt an agnostic approach to the constitutional matter.

I have a hard time believing that with six mainstream parties, and a whole host of minors and independents, that there isn't somewhere that sits as a comfortable political home. If you are waiting for a party to come along that agrees with you on literally every policy and detail, no matter how trivial or small, you are going to be a long time waiting.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 08/04/2021 23:19

The Spectator is definitely the first place I'd go looking for an impartial and objective overview of SNP policy

Oh my word Grin
