To eyeroll at people that hang their political party posters in their windows?

My neighbour...completely normal, late 20s, single mum just put up an SNP poster in her living room window for all her neighbours and passerby's to see. Is there really any need? Must we know the party she supports and who she'll be voting for on May 6th?

When I spotted it (hard to miss, bright yellow) I just cringed and rolled my eyes, I think it's a bit of a display and I'm not sure what the purpose is for.

Politics should be private
If you're ashamed by your political views, sure.

hellofrommetoyou · 08/04/2021 22:27

@ContentsMayBeHot I'm not ashamed. Nothing to be ashamed about but was raised to treat it like sex, keep it private.

We need more people to be politically engaged for the sake of democracy.
Voter apathy is shameful.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 08/04/2021 22:31

I'd say that putting a poster up at least shows a degree of engagement, immersion, participation, and a basic level of awareness, the very opposite of 'ignorance'.

Are you sure you're not just being a bit of a snob, and what you really mean is 'I find it a bit uncouth' ?

hellofrommetoyou · 08/04/2021 22:33

@XDownwiththissortofthingX I'm not a snob by any means but yes, it is uncouth

Oh wow. Weird. Confused

SummerWhisper · 08/04/2021 22:38

You have inspired me to put mine up, so thank you @hellofrommetoyou - I am proud to be political, to advertise for my local candidate, to canvass for them and to piss off the Tories in my area.

SpringtimeSummertime · 08/04/2021 22:39

A sticker in the window:
a) Stops our slime ball Tory candidate from knocking at my door when out canvassing for votes.
b) ....That’s all.

GintyMcGinty · 08/04/2021 22:40

My neighbour has SNP stuff up in her window all year round. And stickers and postcards all over her door. And saltires all over her car.

The state of Scottish politics.

Trump could have learned a lot from the cult of the SNP.

StoneofDestiny · 08/04/2021 22:40

All political parties produce posters for display in windows, billboards like house sale signs, car stickers, badges, t shirts etc etc. It's democracy at work, we have choices, our preferences, various levels of participation and apathy. It's short term and part of the election scenery.

duffeldaisy · 08/04/2021 22:41

I think the people who tend to be against being open with your politics, or who feel it should be private, are the ones who vote for right wing or centre right parties.

To be fired up enough to actually put up a poster, you’re probably doing it to make a point, raise awareness of something you want to change. Not that that’s scientific- it’s just something I’ve noticed a lot.

I like it when neighbours put up posters. I’ve never spoken to a family a few doors down, but still feel warm towards them because we had the same politics last time round!

Since when was being raised with antiquated views an excuse? People are raised in all sorts of odd ways but once you get to a certain age you can actually develop the ability to think independently.

Here we go

I don't agree, therefore it's a 'cult'.

Change the record for crying out loud.

I agree! It’s like their ashamed or something! 🤭

DappledThings · 08/04/2021 22:43

How odd. Is that specific to people campaigning via advert on their property then. What about someone wearing a badge and handing out leaflets in the street? Is it only professional politicians that are allowed to campaign and everyone else should keep their political opinions private? Not exactly a model of democracy is it?

StoneofDestiny · 08/04/2021 22:43

it is uncouth

I imagine that was said to The Suffragettes carrying placards too, to keep them in their place.

SpringtimeSummertime · 08/04/2021 22:43

They’re not their

LagunaBubbles · 08/04/2021 22:45

Just another anti SNP thread by the looks of it. Be glad when election is over and they are voted back in.

user1471519931 · 08/04/2021 22:46

Billboards in fields saying "vote conservative" really fuck me off but hey ho

The raging seethe and complete head's gone nonsense it'll provoke on here is sure to be worth a giggle or two. Grin

GintyMcGinty · 08/04/2021 22:48

Of course it is. If Sturgeon was to eat a small child live on TV people would still vote for her.

HollowTalk · 08/04/2021 22:48

I can't remember the last time there was a party I actually wanted to vote for.

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 08/04/2021 22:49

Goodness me. If more people were engaged with politics - which after all, dictates how our society works and touches all aspects of our lives - and there was more general political discourse among all of us, we might have people making better-informed decisions at the ballot box, and we could all feel more involved in decisions and processes which affect us so fundamentally. Putting up a poster indicates a higher degree of engagement than is usual, and is to be welcomed, surely. Never attempting to discuss politics or political issues is a much clearer indicator of ignorance. How else are opinions formed or amended? Or is the art of debate, and openness to ideas, now dead?

LookAChicken · 08/04/2021 22:50

Billboards are a scourge wherever they may be and whatever they may be advertising. With everyone plugged into the internet it maybe is all a bit old school!
