Why is sky SO expensive?

I just phoned to try and bring our bill down as it’s around £115 a month due to my partner having multiple sport packages, so wanted to cancel movies and see what else I could do to make it a bit cheaper.

They have offered me a ‘deal’ to stop me from cancelling movies... for £140 a month Grin

They said it’s because my current deals are going to run out. Bloody wish I hadn’t bothered now.

Anyone with virgin media and would recommend them over sky? Getting fed up of extortionate prices

@WarwickHunt

We don't have Sky, but what seems amazing to me is that whenever I do see it it seems to be festooned with adverts as well! If I was paying that much (and I'm completely astounded, I thought it was about thirty quid!) I'd expect not to also be a captive audience for their advertising revenue.
I agree, I would never pay a subscription for something that is so crammed with adverts
BarbaraofSeville · 08/04/2021 17:05

^Did you think you cancelling your subscription eliminated sky from existence confused

Yes. It's still a 'thing' OP would not have made a thread about it otherwise^

Well I am very surprised that people are still paying for full Sky since the advent of Now TV and other streaming platforms, that seem to offer 90% of the content for a quarter of the price.

The subscriber numbers must be massively down, so they're trying to keep revenues up from a much smaller group of people willing to pay. Seems quite strange, given that Sky own Now TV, that they'd offer a product that's such a threat to their core business.

Just get rid, we have BT Internet and you either get sport free or a disc, can’t remember which, varies, we have prime (there’s some sport on that) and then all the streaming apps except Apple TV, and it’s still cheaper than Sky (never found a film I haven’t been able to watch on Prime or Now yet). If the rare opportunity arises where. there’s a sports event DH wants to watch which isn’t covered he just buys a pass for whatever it’s on...still cheaper.

GlamourSpider · 08/04/2021 17:57

We gave up with Sky when they lost half their sports contracts but didn't reduce the price. Couldn't justify adding BT Sports to our already expensive Sky package so binned them off. Just have freesat and Netflix now. I've been considering Now TV as it's more pay as you go.

PuppyMonkey · 08/04/2021 18:00

I am always baffled by people who pay for Sky, when you can have the same thing with Now only without adverts. And cheaper.

Soulstirring · 08/04/2021 18:04

I had the same. My current £63 contract which includes sports, HD and movies is expiring so I rang to see what was on offer as the bill was set to double. Absolutely nothing! The signature package and HD, box set etc £51. If I took sports and cinema the best they could do is £85. I’m sticking with signature only. Really disappointed with the pricing increases.

Well judging by the drama they are filming in our building today (apparently without permission from the landlord, or communication with the tenants [other than the one whose flat they are using]), it is because they use vast amounts of resources to make each programme.

Their vehicles are taking up the whole street (causing issues for the garden centre opposite, whose customers can't park). They are running a generator outside my flat. Their people and equipment and noise are filling up half the building.

They are owned by Comcast (post-Murdoch), which has a bad reputation ethically, including trying any way they can to make profit from customers (e.g. charging them for services they didn't order, not allowing them to cancel etc).

Virgin will be cheaper as they will do you a fairly Lengthy introductory offer and if you go to leave after (rather than just phone to ask about reduction) they will bring it down a bit. It does seem cheaper anyway especially if you don't actually want the movies. Their internet is good (not as good as they claim but better than sky at least) and tv and internet isn't affected by weather. I have virgin plus Amazon prime. Used to have a fire stick but now have a smart tv so can have the gorse stick in my bedroom.
