Why is sky SO expensive?

Thefaceofboe · 08/04/2021 11:39

I just phoned to try and bring our bill down as it’s around £115 a month due to my partner having multiple sport packages, so wanted to cancel movies and see what else I could do to make it a bit cheaper.

They have offered me a ‘deal’ to stop me from cancelling movies... for £140 a month Grin

They said it’s because my current deals are going to run out. Bloody wish I hadn’t bothered now.

Anyone with virgin media and would recommend them over sky? Getting fed up of extortionate prices

I didn't like Virgin, I didn't find the box all that easy to use.

I have Sky+ not Sky Q which makes it cheaper, I pay £60 a month for Broadband, TV and Phone includes kids channels and movies but no sky sports atm, I used to have it for the odd game but no longer bother if I want a specific game I either go to my granddads and watch it there or get it on Now TV as a one off.

Isawthathaggis · 08/04/2021 12:43

@emmathedilemma you need to phone virgin and haggle a bit - I’ve just joined virgin on the basic fiber, tv and phone and it’s £32 a month.
£60 is way over the odds.

hellhavenofury · 08/04/2021 12:44

@Thefaceofboe My DP also watches ALOT of sport (literally all he watches) so multi room to us is great so I can go into another room and not have to watch college baseball or whatever Grin. I would honestly have a look at Virgin, if its anything like the deal I got you wont have to lose anything and pay alot less!

OldEvilOwl · 08/04/2021 12:44

I phone up and tell them to put me through to cancellations. Tell them your leaving and they will give you a better deal. Do this every time its up for renewal

AnneElliott · 08/04/2021 12:44

Definitely cancel - they will come back with a better deal before the cut off date.

They keep offering me the sports package half price for 6 months - no wonder if it's that expensive when the deal ends!! We all hate sport so refuse each time, but they keep trying!!

Covidatemyhomework · 08/04/2021 12:44

£130 a month?!! Shock I’m truly astounded at this. I only have Netflix and always thought the £8 a month was fairly expensive (admittedly I watch barely any TV though so am out of touch. I’m genuinely shocked at how much Sky costs - how can people afford this?!!!

ilovesooty · 08/04/2021 12:44

When the league football season ends this summer the European championships start.

ErickBroch · 08/04/2021 12:45

Sport is what makes it expensive - BT sport on its own is unbelievable. I have Sky TV, HD, Box Sets, highest speed internet for £50pm

Thefaceofboe · 08/04/2021 12:48

We are having a baby late September so I’ll just tell him no time for sport Grin problem solved

This is why I'm glad neither DH or I watch sports. We actually cancelled Sky at the end of last year & it finally turned off in February (end of contract). We found we weren't watching much on it anymore, mostly just the kids watching the kids channels. We have Netflix, Prime, Disney+ & Apple TV (free with my iPhone). That seems to cover most things.
What sports does your DH watch?

rainbowthoughts · 08/04/2021 12:51

I'm in a similar position with virgin media. If I remove the things we don't use i lose the 'bundle' and the individual price of things goes up. It's nonsense. Particularly the phone line I have paid them for over 18 years and haven't used for at least 15 of those!

MilduraS · 08/04/2021 12:51

My DH illegally streams most (think he might have BT on his phone via his contract and occasionally he buys a day on Now Tv). If he and many others didn't, I doubt it would affect the price. The tv companies have decided how much most are willing to pay and those exorbitant footballer wages have to come from somewhere. I loathe football so he hasn't had much choice. With one tv and a joint account there was no chance I was going have football on the tv AND be paying for the privilege. I'm normally very easy going so it's the only area where I put my foot down and don't feel bad about it.

Thefaceofboe · 08/04/2021 12:52

What sports does your DH watch

Football and golf are the main ones but he watches most tbh but that’s probably because we have the channels. Football and golf are his main interests really

@rainbowthoughts yes! This is exactly what’s annoying me. We have to pay for stuff we don’t use just to keep our current discounts Confused

You can BT sports for free if you have your mobile with them. I'd cancel sky, change providers etc.

FourDecades · 08/04/2021 12:54

Why don't you cancel the lot, including multiroom so you go to the basic entertainment package. I currently only £18.40/mth for mine.

Then get a Now stick and for the next month see how it works out with DH and his sports.

If he does feel deprived, Sky will send out Deals anyway so you can easily increase your package again

FourDecades · 08/04/2021 12:56

I only kept Sky as l like the option of recording stuff to watch another time but l also share an Amazon Prime and Disney plus subscription with my sister

userxx · 08/04/2021 12:56

NOW TV all the way, I think its £30 for sky sports per month. The entertainment package is usually £8.99 but you can alawys get deals, I'm paying £4.50 for 6 months. If you have a smart TV you'll see the NOW TV app.

moochingtothepub · 08/04/2021 12:57

I'm paying £48 a month but I don't have sports or movies (just Netflix) this includes broadband. The sports are the issue, I'm guessing you have bt and sky sports? Try the "I'm going to leave you" team as they can usually get the price down but I was paying £115 with exh because he wanted sports

DianeCherry · 08/04/2021 13:00

I pay £50 / month for multiroom. No sports.

moochingtothepub · 08/04/2021 13:01

I keep the basic package as I like the record function and needed broadband. Netflix is half price through sky too. You can buy a one day or one week sports pass if they must watch sport as an alternative to a rolling contract

Doilooklikeatourist · 08/04/2021 13:02

We don’t have sport or movies , and I managed to get ours down to £19 a month from £44 ( and a new Sky Q box )
I used the online chat , it took about an hour , but was time well spent
Sky broadband isn’t available in our area , even though they tried to get me to add it on !

FudgeSundae · 08/04/2021 13:02

@Thefaceofboe

Phone up and cancel the lot. Say you can't afford it. They might give you a deal

This is what I did as we’ve done it in the past and got the same deal for £90 with broadband which I’m more than happy with, but this time wouldn’t budge below £130 even though I was trying to cancel movies and multi room Sad

Have you tried pricing everything up as a new customer on the website? I do this every time and have some great deals. At the moment we have movies, Netflix, Disney plus, super fast WiFi, a landline and one extra box for multi room all for under £80 a month.

Is Sky still a thing? Cancelled years ago due to cost/being fleeced, we have freesat, Netflix and Now TV, comes to under £20pcm and get a similar service.
