Why is sky SO expensive?

Thefaceofboe · 08/04/2021 11:39

I just phoned to try and bring our bill down as it’s around £115 a month due to my partner having multiple sport packages, so wanted to cancel movies and see what else I could do to make it a bit cheaper.

They have offered me a ‘deal’ to stop me from cancelling movies... for £140 a month Grin

They said it’s because my current deals are going to run out. Bloody wish I hadn’t bothered now.

Anyone with virgin media and would recommend them over sky? Getting fed up of extortionate prices

"I only have Netflix and always thought the £8 a month was fairly expensive"

@Covidatemyhomework if £8 was expensive to you then you might want to check what you're paying as Netflix is £10 a month now.

OP, can you really afford £1700 a year just on watching the tv? You're in your first house with a baby on the way, the decisions you make now to save will benefit you forever so just bite the bullet and cancel.

It's an absolute rip off. Do you have prime as well? Lots of sport is shown on there now too.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 08/04/2021 13:16

we dip in and out of NowTV for sport. If you can bear the odd week off in between monthly payments there's always an offer round the corner.

userxx · 08/04/2021 13:17

@TheTurn0fTheScrew do they do offers on the sports channel ?

No!! When you put it like that it looks horrifying. My partner has agreed to cancel but no doubt we will have to pay a leaving fee or something.

I have virgin and that is mega expensive at around £140 Pm but as I have my housebound disabled 85 year old mother living with me I pay it as it is her only joy in life even if she spends more time asleep in front of it than watching it.
I never watch tv so wouldn’t even have a tv licence and free view if it was only me.

anniegun · 08/04/2021 13:21

We pay £56 for Sport/HD/Multiroom. We dont get movies as Netflix and Amazon have plenty. The cheapest way to get BT Sport is to get a Plusnet mobile account for omne of your mobiles and bolt BT sport onto that. You can get the app on most new TVs or cast from you phone

Why is sky SO expensive?
MrsTophamHat · 08/04/2021 13:23

I agree it's hugely overpriced.

They have people over a barrel with sports. Most only watch a couple of thing each week but they make you pay for loads of packages to enable you to do so.

We've paid for the sport before because it's cheaper than going to the pub to watch it but it's still really expensive and we're not paying for it at the moment.

ImAbsolutelyTwatted · 08/04/2021 13:23

Our sky bill was increasing to £115pm from £87. I phoned and said I couldn't afford that, they offered all of what I had except movies for £90pm. I told them I wanted to cancel so went through all the motions. A week later I had a call from the cancellation team offering everything (we have 2 multi boxes and ultra HD plus all the channels, movies and sports) for £75pm. This includes super fast broadband, Netflix subscription and unlimited calls. Apparently you need the cancellation team to get the best deals

EveningOverRooftops · 08/04/2021 13:31

I have phone and WiFi with with virgin @£50
Prime
Netflix
Now TV - entertainment & movies
Disney+

Prime is the only constant and I stop and start the other 3 at various times. Right now there’s little ‘new’ TV available so I’ve paused Netflix, Disney & now TV and will activate them when something interesting is about to land.

I find though having one on for a couple of months then switch to another works fine for me.

I bet your OH would be more discerning with his sport viewing if it was pay per view. Perhaps consider streaming service in the short term as a ‘trial’

KoalaOok · 08/04/2021 13:32

You soon get used to having fewer channels and with a new baby on the way that will keep you busy!

MustBeThin · 08/04/2021 13:35

I phone virgin up get a new deal which usually lasts 18 months, when that deal expires I phone them up again and get another deal. I have the full tv package plus sky sports (we don't need to pay extra for bt sport on virgin because it's included), landlines and fastest Internet for £80 per month.

Mummaofboys93 · 08/04/2021 13:37

I'd say you want to cancel & they'll soon come down eventually.

My ex' DF has been with them years. They have the whole package with internet minus multi-room & they get it for £50 a month as he just doesn't stop asking what deals they can give him, can he speak to someone higher up, he will cancelled ect.

I took a similar stance & managed to get everything for £60 minus multi room & Internet. I then during the the first lockdown realised just how little anyone at home watched Sky as we use YouTube, Netflix & Amazon. So I cancelled the whole thing & theu wouldn't stop bugging me for weeks. To the point they even tried to offer me everything for £30 & I still didn't accept as we literally will never use it. They seem desperate once you leave.

Itwasntme101 · 08/04/2021 13:42

Cancel it, go through with the cancellation and they'll send you offers. We pay £29 for all the channels/box sets/sky go plus the sports, we have an old box though and we don't get our phone or broadband through them.

LeeluTheNarwhal · 08/04/2021 13:42

We're under £100 per month with Sky and we have the full Sky Q package with one mini box in our bedroom, sports and movies, BT sport, Netflix, broadband and phone. Basically if they offer it we have it, apart from mobile phone contracts.

I don't know how DH does it most of the time, there have been times he's phoned up when a discount is coming to an end and if they don't offer him one he still haggles or he will hang up and phone again to speak to someone else. He's sometimes spoken to 5 people in one day. If they still can't do anything he'll ask if there are any good deals coming up and we occasionally have one month we have to pay more before he gets it reduced again. We've never had to tell them we're leaving either, a friend did that and they didn't get an offer, they just cancelled it for her straight away.

stackemhigh · 08/04/2021 13:43
@MasterBeth
There are no decent movies on Netflix.
There are plenty actually.
Most are old though.

redastherose · 08/04/2021 13:50

The only thing to do is actually tell them you want to cancel the whole package now and wait for them to come back to you. They will eventually. However, there are probably cheaper ways to get what you want with the options PP's have suggested above.

Redglitter · 08/04/2021 13:55

I don't have Sports but I got rid of movies and haggled with them and now pay £65 a month. That's TV, high speed fibre broadband, multi room SkyQ etc.

Think.a lot of the time it can depend who answers your call what deal you get

WarwickHunt · 08/04/2021 14:01

We don't have Sky, but what seems amazing to me is that whenever I do see it it seems to be festooned with adverts as well! If I was paying that much (and I'm completely astounded, I thought it was about thirty quid!) I'd expect not to also be a captive audience for their advertising revenue.

Chloemol · 08/04/2021 14:03

I don’t have sports or movies currently paying £ 26per month, due to go up to £46 as my deal on sky, Netflix and HD is running out. Removed HD, got it to £31, told them i had seen its £25 for sky and Netflix offer for new people, so paid a one of fee of £20 and now paying £25pm, so slightly less over all in a year than £31pm

Look up what packages they have for new customers, phone them back and see if they will match

3JsMa · 08/04/2021 14:04

I joined Sky 2 years ago.
Had a landline, broadband and TV with Sky Q,just under £50/month.
Realized that we do not need TV (just kids watching their channels or stuff on Netflix).
I changed it to just broadband/landline at the end of a contract and watch the stuff via Chrome Cast when we want without an extra cost.Current bill is around £30.

Whyisitaffectingmenow · 08/04/2021 14:32

We have skyQ, have whole package inc sports, was paying 78 a month, it went up to 140 so I called, they wouldn't lower it so I cancelled. 3 days after cancelling they called and offered for 76 a month for 18months Grin

CroutonsAvatar · 08/04/2021 16:20

Yes, it’s obscene and you feel like you have to keep upgrading or adding packages to make it worth having! It’s a catch-22. We pay A LOT and still get the “you have to upgrade to get that” little notice all the time! Honestly with that amount it should be a singing all fucking dancing!!!!

NoGoodPunsLeft · 08/04/2021 16:49

Have a look on Hot UK Deals, DH always goes on there when our Sky contract is due to to end and finds a deal. Posters on there talk through the steps to take, what to say and what you can usually end up with.

rainbowthoughts · 08/04/2021 16:52

@Whammyyammy

Is Sky still a thing? Cancelled years ago due to cost/being fleeced, we have freesat, Netflix and Now TV, comes to under £20pcm and get a similar service.

Did you think you cancelling your subscription eliminated sky from existence Confused

Yes. It's still a 'thing' OP would not have made a thread about it otherwise Hmm

Norwaydidnthappen · 08/04/2021 16:54

I haven’t had any of them for about 5 years now, don’t miss them either. I was with virgin for years when they suddenly doubled the price despite the fact they were still offering new customers my old price so no reward for loyalty at all. Just watch everything on Netflix or catch up now.
