I am just taken aback at how many families are broken because of conspiracy theories.

I hear you! My DH has lost 2 very, very dear friends (more like brothers to him) because he couldn't handle their rabid Doofus-ism and the attending conspiracy theories and had to 'let them go'. As a result, I lost a dear friend (wife of one of them) as he refused to allow her to 'associate' with me. How much more terrible is it if it's family!!

It's just another piece of shit to chalk up to Doofus. He is the one that created the atmosphere in which this shit flourishes and becomes 'acceptable' to spout. Before him, it was kept to the dark corners and under the various rocks, where it belongs.

Roussette · 21/06/2021 19:33

Yes, it is down to him, and not stopping anytime soon. And awful to hear about your friends, but what can you do?
The thread I read gives all sorts of advice on a sort of 'de-programming' but that's a shot in the dark, people are too far gone. To read all about these families shattered is just so sad. People talk of grieving the loss of a parent who is still alive

lionheart · 22/06/2021 08:46

Obama:

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/jun/21/barack-obama-joe-manchin-voting-rights-proposal

'“Around the world we’ve seen once-vibrant democracies go in reverse,” Obama said. “It is happening in other places around the world and these impulses have crept into the United States … we are not immune from some of these efforts to weaken our democracy.”

“If we have the same kinds of shenanigans that brought about January 6, you know – if we have that for a couple more election cycles we’re going to have real problems in terms of our democracy long term.”'

DuncinToffee · 22/06/2021 15:52

Actions have consequences

abcnews.go.com/US/trump-organization-sues-york-city-wrongful-termination-contracts/story?id=78408860

Mayor de Blasio announced in January he was moving to terminate the contracts with the former president's company following the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/06/2021 16:22

I do wish they'd stop illustrating things with a picture of the Fart looking anything but the shambling old horror that he actually is. There are plenty around which are more accurate to his general demeanour than the one in that piece.

AcrossthePond55 · 22/06/2021 17:56

That will be an interesting case. Wonder if there's a morals clause or whatever you'd call it in the 21st century in those contracts.

I'm sure DiBlasio got legal advice before he terminated them. He's not my favorite person but he's not stupid.

PerkingFaintly · 23/06/2021 11:12

David Puttnam (IIRC) insisted that UK legislation about ownership of new channels included a clause about being a "fit and proper person".

That's what did for Rupert Murdoch's attempts to take over BSkyB – the chickens of phone hacking coming home to roost for him at exactly that moment:
www.theguardian.com/media/2011/jul/13/rupert-murdoch-gives-up-bskyb-bid

(Not that it will stop him long term. The BBC-bashing from rich men who think TV and press ought to be their mouthpieces has in no way abated, even while same rich men have branched out into other stations and media.)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 23/06/2021 13:51

The state of affairs at the seriously ill-named Fort Bliss is very disappointing indeed. No change from Trump's policy is what this looks like, and that's a seriously bad thing.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-57561760

Staff told the BBC the food was mostly edible, but a 15-year-old who has now been released said he was fed uncooked meat. "Sometimes the chicken had blood, the meat very red. We couldn't stand our hunger and we ate it, but we got sick from it."

Mostly edible? What kind of standard is that for feeding children?

And I still want to know what has become of the hundreds of children kidnapped under Trump, then illegally adopted, and with no records kept of what actually happened to their parents. Also whether that is still going on, since children are being allowed in under Biden but their parents are not.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 23/06/2021 15:39

Oh, now, this is interesting.

Correlation rates of 0.85 at the state level between margin of Biden victory and vaccination uptake rate:
www.patheos.com/blogs/daylightatheism/2021/06/americas-red-blue-vaccine-divide/

I suspect one might be able to tell how many people voted for Biden and how many for Trump in any given state without having to re-count any ballots, using this information.

www.rawstory.com/amp/republicans-have-made-it-disturbingly-clear-they-will-defend-trump-s-big-lie-at-any-cost-2653505516?

On Tuesday, Republicans invoked the filibuster to prevent the Senate from bringing S.1, the For the People Voting Rights Act, to the floor for debate, effectively killing the bill. West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin had even cobbled together a compromise, giving Republicans a bunch of goodies they have wanted for a long time, including national voter ID and federal permission to purge the voter rolls, just trying to tempt them into even allowing a debate on the issue.

Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner are suddenly trying to distance themselves from Donald Trump now that the criminal indictments are about to start flying in New York.

Roussette · 23/06/2021 19:30

It's been so refreshing not to have to see or hear from those two for months.

AcrossthePond55 · 23/06/2021 20:46

@Roussette

It's been so refreshing not to have to see or hear from those two for months.
Hasn't it though?

As far as them distancing themselves from Daddy Dearest, the (wormy) apple hasn't fallen far from the (diseased) tree.

Pretty soon Javanka will be saying "We don't really know him. We've never met. Maybe we've met once we don't remember. We meet a lot of people. But we don't know him at all".

Roussette · 23/06/2021 21:13

Hahaha quite likely!

lionheart · 23/06/2021 21:33

That's funny. As if people forget. As if the law won't see them.

AcrossthePond55 · 23/06/2021 22:33

@lionheart

It does quite remind me of when my DSs were toddlers and put their hands over their eyes and said "You can't see me!!!!". Grin

It's such a relief to no longer have Javanka's oily presence in our daily lives. I see from reading the CNN report above that Donny Jr is still trying to get his father's love though.

Doofus is back to replaying his greatest hits with a return trip to that pesky border.

thehill.com/policy/national-security/559831-house-republicans-to-join-trump-for-visit-to-border
Around a dozen Republicans are scheduled to join former President Trump next Wednesday during his visit at the border, The Hill has confirmed.

Members from the Republican Study Committee (RSC) will join the former president at the U.S.-Mexico border, the latest sign that Republicans are maintaining a close proximity to Trump since he left office and shoring up support on an issue that they believe has been mishandled by the Biden administration.

That link does not surprise me Lion.

I remember Obama at the WH Correspondents Dinner, his hilarious speech mostly knocking Trump ... that ignited it all I think

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 24/06/2021 09:17

@Roussette - yes, I think you're right about that Correspondents' Dinner speech by Obama. Little did he imagine what a monster he was provoking. Maybe if he had know, he wouldn't have done it?
