I keep potatoes in the fridge

Just that. Potatoes go in fridge. They stay fresh for longer. Don't know anyone else who does this. (Eggs room temp).

@ThePlantsitter

Where do people who don't keep them in the fridge keep them?
In the kitchen cupboard, where we keep tins and jars etc. I take them out their bags and keep them in a basket so they can get air. The garage is a good place to keep them as well if no room in your kitchen cupboards.
dementedpixie · 06/04/2021 11:58

You could try a potato storage bag

Aprilx · 06/04/2021 11:58

I wouldn’t have room for potatoes in the fridge even if I wanted to, it is usually full of foods that really need to be in the fridge. The potatoes are in a potato bag in a vegetable box in the pantry.

AlwaysLatte · 06/04/2021 11:59

Not me, it's meant to interfere with the starch in the potatoes I think and they're not so nice...

Pearl97 · 06/04/2021 12:19

Yes, definitely DON’T keep them in the fridge.

SweetToffee · 06/04/2021 12:41

Eggs and potatoes in the fridge

BlackCatShadow · 06/04/2021 12:46

But it's not dark! There's a light in there!!

😂

I keep my potatoes in my special Victorian potato larder. Not, really. I keep them in the veg drawer of the fridge or if the bag's too big, in the cupboard.

TheKeatingFive · 06/04/2021 12:48

New yes, old no.

Eggs also no.

Troublewaters2021 · 06/04/2021 12:49

I mainly go by where I buy things in the supermarket. So don’t put them in the fridge.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 06/04/2021 23:36
@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants the light goes off when you close the door 😆😆
No it doesn't!

Just ask the milk!!

Divineswirls · 06/04/2021 23:46

I do because otherwise they sprout and / or turn to smelly mush in my kitchen even in the darkest cupboard.

LoveFall · 07/04/2021 00:03

I put small potatoes in the fridge. Larger ones in a dark cooler bin.

The first time I visited England I was shocked to see eggs kept on the counter and sold from regular shelves (not refrigerated) in the grocery stores. Honestly, It made me hesitant to eat them.

Where I grew up and live, eggs are always refrigerated. I have never heard that our eggs are washed and it removes some protection, but I am not an expert in egg production.

When I visit England now I am used to seeing unrefrigerated eggs on sale, but I still refrigerate them when I get them home.

PickAChew · 07/04/2021 00:05

I keep new potatoes in the fridge because they spoil so quickly but not Maincrop potatoes.

LoveFall · 07/04/2021 00:14

I looked it up. Yes, Canadian eggs are washed, and it is recommended they be refrigerated. Learn something new every day!

Hankunamatata · 07/04/2021 00:17

I keep my spuds in the fridge. They last forever. Cupboards are too warm and mice would get them in the shed.

Crankley · 07/04/2021 00:27

I remove any plastic and place potatoes in a cotton bag which I keep in the cupboard under the sink.

FunnyWonder · 07/04/2021 00:32

Ours live in the fridge. I've tried keeping them in the cupboard but they don't last. My brother buys his from a farmer's market and assures me they keep forever in their big brown paper sack in a cupboard. He thinks it helps that they are unwashed and therefore dry and that they are not in sweaty plastic bags.

HeronLanyon · 07/04/2021 00:32

Never ever in the fridge and have never heard of this.
Fruit not in fridge either other than berries and rhubarb.
Eggs in fridge - don’t eat many and doesn’t feel right to leave them out for so long.

LadyJaye · 07/04/2021 01:33

Can we go back to why you shouldn't put cucumbers in the fridge, please?

I've always done this and I suspect finding out why not will BLOW MY MIND.

MrsFezziwig · 07/04/2021 01:54

Should I keep them in the plastic bag in the cupboard? Literally no idea how to store them so they last longer

Wherever you keep them, it shouldn’t be in a plastic bag, that traps moisture and encourages mould. Keep them in a potato bag made of mesh or fabric.

DarceyDashwood · 07/04/2021 07:18

I worked in a big farm shop (and potato farm) when I was a teenager and always store my veg in the same way as we did there as figure they knew best in terms of what kept the veg fresh for longest!

Potatoes, onions and eggs were never in the fridge!

Tianatiers · 07/04/2021 08:10

@LadyJaye cucumbers get cold injury aparently if kept in a fridge. I only found this out recently and have been keeping them out of the fridge ever since and they last so much longer and taste better in my opinion.

sunshineandshowers40 · 07/04/2021 08:15

Where you find the potatoes in our house depends on who put the shopping away: I put them in the fridge and DH put them in a cupboard.

Ifailed · 07/04/2021 08:21

New potatoes are kept in the ground where they grow until needed, main crop kept in a brown sack in the shed where they never chit unless exposed to light.

MeanderingGently · 07/04/2021 08:29

All my fruit and veg goes in the fridge, they last much longer and stay fresher than withering away in a cupboard.
I keep eggs in the fridge too.
And butter, I can't stand butter left to go rancid in a butter dish left out all night.
