I keep potatoes in the fridge

Just that. Potatoes go in fridge. They stay fresh for longer. Don't know anyone else who does this. (Eggs room temp).

Well yes when the door is open but not even then in our case for about 2 years until we changed the bulb!

SarahBellam · 05/04/2021 21:44

This is a great song title

I keep potatoes in the fridge,
Eggs are at room temp.
I left my bananas on a bridge,
The day I married Gary Kemp.

True.

I keep mine in the garage, in a basket and covered in a tea towel.
Last ages

mynameiscalypso · 05/04/2021 21:50

I thought there was something about the texture / sweetness of potatoes when you store them in the fridge?

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 05/04/2021 21:51

Food Standards Agency recommends against it
www.food.gov.uk/safety-hygiene/acrylamide

MouldyPombear · 05/04/2021 22:42

@Tianatiers where abouts are you?
In some countries the eggs are cleaned in a way which destroys part of the shell so it's advised to keep them in the fridge to minimize the risk of bacteria getting through. Not the case in the UK though. And the change from room temp in the shop to the low temp of a fridge can encourage bacteria growth.

All our fruit and veg is kept in the fridge lasts much longer.

Losttheequipment · 06/04/2021 00:32

It’s the only cool and dark place I have, that’s why I keep them in there.
I also keep eggs in there, way less likely to get broken in there than in my cupboards

SquizzaMama · 06/04/2021 00:49

We keep our homegrown potatoes hanging up outside in net bags...

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 06/04/2021 00:56

What's wrong with that? I keep eggs in there too.

ThePlantsitter · 06/04/2021 00:59

I wish you'd don't this as an 'ask me anything' slot.

ThePlantsitter · 06/04/2021 00:59

*done

RiojaRose · 06/04/2021 01:02

No potato of mine would be seen dead in a fridge, OP. Because it’s wrong.

Tianatiers · 06/04/2021 10:53

@mouldypombear I'm in the uk, I just follow the instructions on the egg box which says "Keep refrigerated after purchase. For best results remove from refrigerator 30 minutes before use."

littlepattilou · 06/04/2021 11:02

@Bramblebutter YANBU. It makes them last longer putting them in the fridge.

Even though some stuff I buy is NOT refrigerated in the store, (tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, radishes, general salad stuff, mushrooms, potatoes, eggs, bananas, strawberries, grapes, other fruit, etc etc,) I STILL put it in the fridge when I get it.

Some 'jar' stuff, like sandwich pickle, mustard, cranberry sauce, jam, salad cream, tube of tomato puree, and similar, stays in the cupboard, but once it's opened, it goes in the fridge.

Tianatiers · 06/04/2021 11:17

Those saying they store their potatoes in the fridge, will you still do that even after reading about the acrylamide risk?

gamerchick · 06/04/2021 11:22

Yes. Breathing in causes cancer these days .

You're not supposed to as it messes with the sugars/makes them more starchy or something but we'll still do it.

Oldraver · 06/04/2021 11:34

I do as there isn't anywhere else for them to go and we have two big salad drawers in the fridge

Ivy455 · 06/04/2021 11:36

I put them in the fridge veg drawer with all the other fresh food.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 06/04/2021 11:38

It's not a good idea to keep potatoes in the fridge www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/storing-food-safely-potatoes

ThePlantsitter · 06/04/2021 11:44

Where do people who don't keep them in the fridge keep them?

GoingThruTheMotions · 06/04/2021 11:45

I keep potatoes in the fridge. Didn't know about the cancer thing.
Will probably continue to keep in the fridge though because where else could they go (plus they keep better)
I tend to boil before making wedges etcso sounds like that takes the risk down anyway.

Anoisagusaris · 06/04/2021 11:49

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants the light goes off when you close the door 😆😆

dementedpixie · 06/04/2021 11:52

I have no room in my fridge for potatoes. They are kept in a cupboard along with tomatoes and onions

SpacePug · 06/04/2021 11:55

I was just so happy seeing this as I never know where to keep potatoes they always go sprouty and green so quick. I thought "fridge!! Amazing idea I'll do that right now"
But then saw the links about how it's dangerous. Should I keep them in the plastic bag in the cupboard? Literally no idea how to store them so they last longer
