It's doing my head - and my scrolling finger - in.

OP posts:
EarringsandLipstick · 05/04/2021 18:23

@Sparklingbrook

I wouldn't mind a timed edit function but if it went on any longer than being able to correct a typo in the title you would have posters rewriting history all over the place.
😂😂 can you imagine this one? It could be hilarious as well as head-wrecking!
whenthebellsring · 05/04/2021 18:24

Getting ready for a big cheer, Fembot!🤞🏼

@Giantrooster if you cared you'd have quoted and This'd it Grin

LucieStar · 05/04/2021 18:24

@CateTown

It adds nothing to the conversation to just type This.

It does add to the conversation - it highlights a previous comment in bold that might otherwise have been missed, and it adds emphasis to that viewpoint, which lets the OP know that more than one person shares that opinion. In that sense, it does add something.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 05/04/2021 18:25

Ah so that's why use of the strikethough seems to have fallen out of favour lately. Seems technology's on my side too! Thank you, autocorrect, thank you 🥳

Oh no. People not using MN as other posters want them to is a big problem this week. Sad
This.

I might use an ellipse too...

CateTown · 05/04/2021 18:25

MN tech is on my side maybe?!

Smile could be! At least I still have cut and paste and asterisks

It would get complicated @EarringsandLipstick. So if someone had quoted a post and typed 'this'. But then the poster went in and edited the post to something completely different who would have to sort out the quoted post? And what if the 'this' person didn't agree with it any more. Shock

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 05/04/2021 18:27

@EarringsandLipstick

Agreed. I don't know if people realise that quoting a PP is not the same as tagging. Often folk quote with a follow up question which without the @ is unlikely to get a response.

There's various camps on this one tho.

I don't often @ someone unless I am particularly making a point & think it's important they see.

Usually I concur with the view that it's not great manners, as posters on a thread will follow it & see other's points / responses to them.

Its a lot easier to go to the I under the comments and type what you want between the symbols. this is on the mobile site.
Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 05/04/2021 18:28

Well, fuck! Wrong quote!

EastWestWhosBest · 05/04/2021 18:29

@CateTown

You don't need to signal your agreement with a pp if you have nothing to add to the conversation. You can just nod sagely.
But by reposting what they say it adds another post in agreement.

What if someone posted ‘my husband has been shagging around and has got 3 other women pregnant and now has given me the clap. What should I do’. Then the first poster says she should LTB. No one else would bother saying anything if all they do is nod in agreement.

I think a quote wouldn't change even if the quoted poster changed their original post (the quoted post) and that's how a history changer would be caught if they tried.

Others who weren't quoted could easily do some harm with rewriting history though, true.

I know, and even if MNHQ set the edit function to a really brief time, you'd have posters swearing blind they'd been misrepresented, or they didn't mean to agree with the post...carnage. Glorious unrivalled MN carnage 😂

Strike through is a piece of poetic genius i fucking love it and it conveys so much more that could be explained in words

Although I just click on the I next to the mn emoji button and it works.

Back to op, This I use all the time. It's to show that I really agree with the poster, and it's usually a long post as they are the ones that are well thought out.

Sidesaladofchips · 05/04/2021 18:31

@TheRealForReal

I think if someone has given great advice there's a chance the OP might miss it, especially of there's loads of posts. So copying and pasting it and saying you agree or whatever means the OP is more likely to see it surely

No we can just have 200 likes, 1 laugh emoji and 2 wtf emoji instead. That's better for some people. No more words.

CentBoppers · 05/04/2021 18:33

So why not say "what Elgobbo said on page 2"

Maybe because not everybody has the same number of posts showing per page?

I have 100 per page, I think that long term posters had/have the option for 1000, I seem to remember that the default is 10, or at least that's what I had before I customised my settings.

SnoopyOnALude · 05/04/2021 18:33

It adds nothing to the conversation to just type This.
Loads of crap that gets posted that is far less succinct than the innocuous 'this' adds nothing to the conversation though, to be fair.

Oh no you didn't, it's the bloody autocorrect (as a pp explained above). It's not supposed to do that!

I think it will be easier on the laptop - another poster explained it above but never mind if you can't be arsed. It can be such a faff, I know! You get used to it.Smile
