Laundry Dilemma

JustALittleBitClueless · 04/04/2021 13:18

Please be kind, this is my first post and I would appreciate some guidance.

DH and I have been married six months (and nine days) and I'm really struggling with the laundry. Up until now, I've had to hand wash on the sink and do our sheets and pillowcases in the bath. It's a big effort to wring everything out, and some days I can't peg out on the line. I have an old wooden clothes horse and it's not up to much.

Well now we have bought a second hand twin tub, which is amazing, but I still don't have a clue what I am doing laundry wise.

Should I put the immersion on first and then connect the hose to the hot tap, and fill? Or should I connect the hose to the cold tap, and then use the twin tub heater? Which is more economical?

When I've washed the whites, do I need to add more powder when I put the coloureds in? Does anyone know? I'll be doing DH's work overalls last, of course.

Will it be okay to do the first spin back into the wash tub and then fill the spinner water tub with cold water from the tap, and move the output hose, so that the spinner water goes back into the sink? And how many times would I do the cold water thing? Until the water runs clear, I guess.

Sorry for all the questions, my mind is in a whirl. I could ask DM, but she lives three bus rides away and neither of us has a phone installed. Although we hope to have one once we've paid off the bank loan on the Cortina.

To add to the situation, I'm expecting, due on 1st July, I hope it's a boy. I don't know if it would be hygienic to wash the nappies first, given that they will need the hottest wash. But what about the other washing? I thought if the nappies were soaked in a bucket of Napisan and sluiced off beforehand, I could wash them first, and then do the baby's nightgowns, rompers, matinee coats, bonnets etc, towels, sheets and pillowcases, our clothes, then overalls last. I'd probably need to wash twice a week then.

But at the moment, is a weekly wash going to be enough, given that it might take several days to get things dry? We have a gas fire in the living room and a wall heater in the bedroom, so I probably need another clothes horse. I'm still working Monday to Friday, so have to do my housework at the weekend. At least DH spends Saturdays and Sundays fishing, which gets him out of my hair.

Reading this back, I may be overthinking things. But you'd think I'd be able to find a system that works. It's 1979, for goodness sake, not 1879. And I'm 19, with two 'A' levels, so I have a brain.

Stephen is nice. Darren reminds me of a boy in school that I didn't like.

Michael Paul goes with our surname really well too.

@SnugglySnerd

The shire horse ornamental have transported me right back to the house of our neighbour in the 1980s.. She always wore a house coat and rollers and her house smelt of deep frying. She had a pink bathroom suite with pink swirls carpet. She was lovely!
I think you may have lived next door to my Nan Grin
AWamBamBoom · 06/04/2021 09:15

Well, I'm off shopping again today. My oldest Debbie has her Sunday school picnic this week and I want her to look smart
I heard they've got some lovely nylon trouser suits in, they are all the rage apparently. I'm not sure but if St michaels sell them they must be OK
I'll give her school schools a polish and she'll look the bees knees

Frickssake · 06/04/2021 09:17

What about the name Roger? Or Brian? Or Robin?

JustALittleBitClueless · 06/04/2021 09:20

Woolworths have some lovely things for girls at the moment, if you like Crimpline @AWamBamBoom. It's non-iron.

Well OP you’re on more than me at £1,600 a year, and I’m a qualified medical professional....

ElinoristhenewEnid · 06/04/2021 09:29

Just done the ironing and managed to melt my dhs bri nylon shirt It was his favourite in bottle green - it said non iron but I do like my man to look freshly pressed when he goes out 😊

moochingtothepub · 06/04/2021 09:30

Flashbacks here from when I was a kid ... you can always send the 6 year old to fetch their Nanna about a mile away, that's perfectly acceptable!

JustALittleBitClueless · 06/04/2021 09:43

I need to tell you about work.

There are six women in the office, including me. Our desks are arranged around the edge of the room, all facing inwards, so that we can chat.

We have a coffee break from 10am until 10:15. Lunch time is from 12:30 until 1pm. We have a canteen, but I bring sandwiches every day. There's a tea break from 3pm until 3:15.

Peggy is our tea lady. She makes all the drinks for the whole department and we have a kitty. You have to go to the kitchen to fetch your own drink, but we all have our own mug. How Peggy remembers who has what is beyond me. You all get the right drink with the right number of sugars every time. Coffee break is my favourite, we have milky coffee, which is lovely. At Christmas (well the whole of December really), Dot brings in a bottle of Baileys and we have a nip in our morning coffee. Have you tried it, it's really nice.

No, but a drop of babycham goes down a treat at Christmas, especially with a sugar lump and a drop of brandy. Hubby has a double diamond on very special occasions. We keep it in the sideboard in the front room

JustALittleBitClueless · 06/04/2021 09:50

I think I've set my heart on Michael @Frickssake.

£1600 sounds a lot, but it ends up being £25 a week after stoppages. I was shocked when I got my first payslip. I used to get £4.50 a day when I worked on the pick 'n' mix on a Saturday, and I didn't have to pay tax either.

DH's Saturday job paid £5, and he finished at 1 o'clock. Plus, he got to drive the van sometimes. But you would expect that.

Take it to the bag wash or the local baths where they had bid machines, spin dryers and you could have a chat.

Frickssake · 06/04/2021 09:54

I got caught in a shower on the way home from the hairdresser's. Luckily for me, id purchased a nifty pocket sized hair rain cover that ties neatly under the chin. Phew.
Was thinking of getting some of those heated rollers- has anyone any advice?.

JustALittleBitClueless · 06/04/2021 09:54

@AWamBamBoom, my auntie Brenda likes a brandy and Babycham. I'm told she gets in some right states.

My favourite tipple is Britvic orange, no ice. DH likes Skol lager. We don't go out much, maybe once a month if that. DH has his fishing and I have the house to look after.

If I want a curl in my hair, I like the traditional way. Setting lotion and rollers. If you're careful, they don't hurt too much when you sleep in them. It's worth it for the lovely curls you get the next day.

Flamingo Road on a Saturday night. Much better than Dallas.

AWamBamBoom · 06/04/2021 10:05

You have an orange Britvic as just a drink? I consider it a starter, well it was at the Berni Inn, they are a proper restaurant so they should know

JustALittleBitClueless · 06/04/2021 10:25

I like a melon starter. Chicken Maryland is my favourite main meal, I love the fried banana. For pudding, it's a choice between black forest gateau or sherry trifle.

I love arctic roll or baked alaska for dessert - they both sound adventurous - make me think of polar bears!

Daisychainsandlaughs · 06/04/2021 11:11

I was a young mum in the early 80s so am loving this thread. Lots of memories. I never had a twin tub though. Had an automatic. Nappies soaked in Napisan then boil wash in the automatic. Those newfangled disposables were absolutely rubbish.

JustALittleBitClueless · 06/04/2021 11:19

I wish I had a chest freezer, maybe one day. There's not enough space in the freezer part of our fridge for ice cream. We put frozen peas in there, plus the ice cube tray, although we don't have ice in our drinks.

Perhaps I should take the ice cube tray out. Then if I defrost the fridge (the freezer part is totally iced up), there might be room for an arctic roll. Genius!

Good news! The jack for the Cortina has broken (that's not the good news) so DH needs to go to his DPs after work today. His DF has said he can have the spare jack for as long as he likes, no need to rush to give it back. DH is lucky his DPs have a phone, he was able to arrange everything quite easily.

But, it means he can drop me off at DM's (unannounced) and she'll be able to show me how to work the twin tub after all.

And we'll have to call to the chip shop on the way back, and get fish and chips for tea, as there won't be time to cook.

So thank you all for your wise words, I'm really grateful. My dilemma is solved. I'm so looking forward to laundry day on Saturday (weather permitting). No more slaving over the sink (or bath) to wash, rinse and wring out by hand. I'll never again complain about doing the washing. Ever. Smile

Doing my weekly shop today. So grateful for my shopping trolley - saves my aching arms. Grin

JustALittleBitClueless · 07/04/2021 09:11

We're lucky to have a Safeway quite near, so I can pop in for a few bits every day, if I want to.

Eventually, I'd like to learn to drive. Then I might be able to persuade DH to let me use the Cortina and get a weekly shop from the Big Asda.

Hubby gives me my housekeeping every week. With increasing prices it is getting more difficult to buy everything needed. Need to get toothpaste this week so no pack of biscuits for me 😒
