Laundry Dilemma

JustALittleBitClueless · 04/04/2021 13:18

Please be kind, this is my first post and I would appreciate some guidance.

DH and I have been married six months (and nine days) and I'm really struggling with the laundry. Up until now, I've had to hand wash on the sink and do our sheets and pillowcases in the bath. It's a big effort to wring everything out, and some days I can't peg out on the line. I have an old wooden clothes horse and it's not up to much.

Well now we have bought a second hand twin tub, which is amazing, but I still don't have a clue what I am doing laundry wise.

Should I put the immersion on first and then connect the hose to the hot tap, and fill? Or should I connect the hose to the cold tap, and then use the twin tub heater? Which is more economical?

When I've washed the whites, do I need to add more powder when I put the coloureds in? Does anyone know? I'll be doing DH's work overalls last, of course.

Will it be okay to do the first spin back into the wash tub and then fill the spinner water tub with cold water from the tap, and move the output hose, so that the spinner water goes back into the sink? And how many times would I do the cold water thing? Until the water runs clear, I guess.

Sorry for all the questions, my mind is in a whirl. I could ask DM, but she lives three bus rides away and neither of us has a phone installed. Although we hope to have one once we've paid off the bank loan on the Cortina.

To add to the situation, I'm expecting, due on 1st July, I hope it's a boy. I don't know if it would be hygienic to wash the nappies first, given that they will need the hottest wash. But what about the other washing? I thought if the nappies were soaked in a bucket of Napisan and sluiced off beforehand, I could wash them first, and then do the baby's nightgowns, rompers, matinee coats, bonnets etc, towels, sheets and pillowcases, our clothes, then overalls last. I'd probably need to wash twice a week then.

But at the moment, is a weekly wash going to be enough, given that it might take several days to get things dry? We have a gas fire in the living room and a wall heater in the bedroom, so I probably need another clothes horse. I'm still working Monday to Friday, so have to do my housework at the weekend. At least DH spends Saturdays and Sundays fishing, which gets him out of my hair.

Reading this back, I may be overthinking things. But you'd think I'd be able to find a system that works. It's 1979, for goodness sake, not 1879. And I'm 19, with two 'A' levels, so I have a brain.

Just got back from the hairdresser's. Git a lovely perm! Mind you those driers they sat me under were a tad warm! Phew!
Off to put the pressure cooker on for tea now!

JustALittleBitClueless · 05/04/2021 17:22

How trendy @Frickssake, I bet you look lovely! Smile

I am having toasted sandwiches for tea made with my new breville sandwich toaster which seals all the same ingredients inside the bread. Think I will have ham cheese and onion tonight👍

JustALittleBitClueless · 05/04/2021 18:15

You lucky duck @ElinoristhenewEnid.

DH is not back yet, but the chicken pie is ready. I'll have to keep it warm on regulo 2 and pray that it's not ruined.

I was born in 1973 ,I don't ever remember my mum having a twin tub ,she always had an automatic machine,we always had a phone to although I think they rented it?
By 1979 we had moved into a house on a new estate and we all had continental quilts as my mum called them.

Thighdentitycrisis · 05/04/2021 19:58

@x2boys
We got our continental quilt s from Brentford Nylons and lovely polyester covers for them too

Thighdentitycrisis · 05/04/2021 19:59

Mind you the Lino on the bedroom floor’s still freezing in the mornings

hadtojoin · 05/04/2021 20:12

I had a twin tub from my mum when I married in the 80's, I used it just like you do. I always put in hot water to start then did the whites first, then the towels, then the not so dirty jumpers or trousers as the water was getting cooler. If I had any really dirty clothes from the kids/DH I would heat the water up again and use that water as a pre wash, These would be spun and rinsed ready to be the first (or second if I had sheets etc) wash in fresh water.
After a few years I got an automatic but would still use the twin tub if I wanted to catch up on a sunny day. I was really sad when it gave up the ghost and would love to have one again.

I got a turquoise nylon housecoat from them.

You need a spin drier, OP, they have a much faster spin speed than the spinner bit on a twin tub, so they spin a lot drier. And you can cheat by spinning out the soapy water, which means less rinsing, then spinning again when rinsed.

(This thread has made me feel old, I was 24 in 1979.)

JustALittleBitClueless · 05/04/2021 20:53

Disaster averted, DH said his pie and chips were lovely and we had butterscotch Angel Delight and tinned peaches for afters.

My favourite ever film is 'The Way We Were' with the dreamy Robert Redford. DH took me to the pictures to see it on our first date. I cried at the end. I was nearly fourteen, but I looked older.

I'm hoping to get the twin tub out on Saturday, if it's a good drying day. I wish the weathermen could get the forecast right, how hard can it be?

We have flannelette candy stripe sheets, with matching pillow cases. We've got two blankets on the bed at the moment, plus the counterpane. I think I will need the hot water bottle again tonight.

Oooh. Did anyone watch Dallas tonight? I missed it
Spoiler alert, it was Kristin.
hadtojoin · 05/04/2021 20:56

I forgot to say, after spinning the soapy water back into the tub and moving the outlet to the sink, use the spare (filling) hose - connected to the cold tap - to swish the clothes with water and spin- you don't need to fill up the spinner with water. I do this twice moving the clothes around in between.. Some machines have a hole on top at the side of the spinner that you can attach the filling hose to and run the cold water through as it is spinning for a couple of mins then finish with no water.

JustALittleBitClueless · 05/04/2021 21:03

@hadtojoin, thank you for that, most useful to know. Smile

@CecilyP

I remember my mum's automatic washing machine died at some point in the 90's. She chose to replace it with a twin tub and I was quickly trained up in using it.

Why would she do that? It was unusual in those days for houses to be plumbed for an automatic, but if they were, why would you not use one?

I recall around 1971 my neighbour's husband was a plumber but he never had time to plumb-in 'her' automatic washing machine so she asked me round to watch her turn off the water and take a hacksaw to the pipes under the sink! 'He'll have the plumb the bloody thing in now!'
JustALittleBitClueless · 05/04/2021 21:39

Well, I'm exhausted. After the hoovering and cooking and the chicken pie drama, I'm ready for my bed.

It's work tomorrow. I'm making up the hot water bottle now and I have to set the alarm clocks. DH's is a big loud thing with two clangy bells on top. I set it for six o'clock. Mine is a travel style one in green, it's not so loud, but still works fine. I set mine for six thirty.

Night night everyone.

You need to "get with it". We have a teasmaid - it's fabulous. Wakes you up in the morning AND a cup of tea! It's the future!

JustALittleBitClueless · 06/04/2021 07:44

I think I'd be worried that the water wasn't hot enough. And if I put the milk in a jug, will it be okay on the bedside table all night? I might be overthinking, I know.

Work starts at 8am, and we finish at 4:30pm, with half an hour for lunch. We don't have to clock in, but we sign our name in a big book, and put the time down.

Me too, but I always used the launderette. In the 70s my friend worked as a nanny at a house that only had a twin tub which she used to wash her and the children’s clothes - it just seemed more trouble than it was worth.

Felifox · 06/04/2021 08:02

Vesta curry, good heavens no. One of my colleague's wife showed me how to make an authentic curry from scratch. You need ghee and all sorts of spices. But it keeps so you can cook it in advance over the weekend.

I banned tea in bed cos dh kept dripping it on the sheets. I know those nylon ones are supposed to be drip dry but awful to sleep on, anyway MIL's friends gave us single ones so she swapped them for cotton. Get rid of the twin tub and buy a Hoovermatic. My dm does the

I was thinking about baby names on the bus. We have a baby name book, it's called Name Your Child Eric Partridge. The title does make me laugh. Every time.

DH likes John and Peter. But his name is Paul and we want to use that for a middle name. So I'm pretty sure the baby would get called John, Paul, George and Ringo or Peter, Paul and Mary, and that would be unkind. I like Michael. But not shortened or anything. Mike or Mick, ugh. Michael Paul sounds nice. Smile

CecilyP · 06/04/2021 08:25

Stephen would go nicely with Paul, or how about Darren?
