To take DD back to a&e

A couple of days ago my 9 month old seemed a little off and spiked a temperature of 39.2, calpol was only keeping it around the 39 mark. Called 111 who said to take her to a&e. Got there and it had risen to 40.1.

They checked her over, everything was fine although her throat was a little red but nothing that should make it spike like that. Took a blood sample and gave her iv antibiotics whilst we awaited the results. Her temp dropped and she perked up almost immediately.

Bloods came back and the docs words were “there is nothing there concerning, we think she has tonsillitis. We are going to send you home with antibiotics but if her temperature isn’t under control after two days, come back.”

Her temperature is now under control, probably too low if anything at 35, so I can’t give anymore calpol or ibuprofen.

But she still just isn’t right. She won’t play, she just sits there having a cuddle and randomly she cries out. She throws herself around and might settle in an awkward position for a bit before crying again. I probably managed to get her on the floor playing 3 times in the whole day for about a minute each time before the crying started again.

I wasn’t sure if she was just over tired last night so thought I’ll put her to bed and see in the morning. She just woke up for a feed and it’s taken me an hour to get her back to sleep as she was just crying and throwing herself around like she doesn’t know what she wants.

She’s had 3 full days of antibiotics (as apparently the iv antibiotics count as a full day) and am wondering what to do if she is the same in the morning. I don’t know if I’m over reacting and need to give the antibiotics longer to work, or if I’m under reacting and should be taking her back.

I would take her back if you're worried, or call 111 again and see what they say. Hope she gets well soon. Flowers

Trust your instincts and go back to a and e

Marriagegoingtoimplode · 04/04/2021 04:37

Not meaning to scare you op, but a low temperature is a sepsis marker.

SunnySideUp2020 · 04/04/2021 04:37

Take her back.

midsummabreak · 04/04/2021 04:40

Take her straight away or call ambulance A temp of 35 is too low and the cause needs to be checked

Low temperature is as much of a problem as high temperature- take her back to A&E.

missnevermind · 04/04/2021 04:48

Take her back. Doctors will tell you they would rather you did if you were concerned.

Cormoran · 04/04/2021 04:51

Go back. Low temperature combined with irritability and fretting is indeed a sign of infection. Trust your instincts

Advice54321 · 04/04/2021 04:54

Ok thanks everyone. I did hear them mutter the word sepsis between themselves before they took the bloods but assumed it was nothing given the results.

Hopefully it’s just too much Calpol and ibuprofen which has lowered her temperature.

I don’t mean to scare you but a temperature of 35 is too low and can be a sign that her infection has become very severe. Please go back to A and E she needs to be seen ASAP xx

blackcat86 · 04/04/2021 05:01

Low temperature doesn't happen from too much calpol. That simply isn't how it works. The body would go back to its normal temperature of around 36.4 If you are confident that your temp taking is accurate and she is genuinely 35oc then she needs emergency medical help right now.

Advice54321 · 04/04/2021 05:06

I’ve just taken her temp whilst she’s sleeping and it’s 35.6 now.

We have the same in ear thermometer the docs always have, so I am confident it is accurate.

Stop taking her temperature. Just drive her to a hospital please!
She is clearly unwell and you can't help her from home

Jeds55 · 04/04/2021 05:10

Definitely take her back. We had 2 doctors appts, a 111 call, and 2 trips to A&E before we had to call an ambulance for our dd in December. Ended up in hospital for 5 days on IV AB. When they kept sending me away saying ear infection etc I just knew it was more serious and wish I'd pushed for bloods earlier. You know your hild best. After first A&E visit thry gave us letter to speed up the next visit (if within 72 hours). Hope it gets better

Soubriquet · 04/04/2021 05:10

Take her back

It might be a waste of time and you’ll be home and grumpy from loosing sleep, or it might save your dd’s life

Take her back

Ringsender2 · 04/04/2021 05:11

Go back if you are worried, or phone 111 at a minimum

Advice54321 · 04/04/2021 05:11

@blackcat86 can I ask how you know that? Just my understanding was from when a doctor told my sister she was slowly killing my niece one dose of calpol at a time, by lowering her body temperature too much.

Whocutdownthecherrytree · 04/04/2021 05:15

Go to hospital

Whocutdownthecherrytree · 04/04/2021 05:15

Stop asking the internet for advice

blackcat86 · 04/04/2021 05:17

Calpol is just paracetamol for children. If taken correctly it would be like any other paracetamol- if you felt poorly and took paracetamol for a few days you wouldn't expect your body temp to just drop and keep dropping. You expect it to go back to normal. The body wants to keep itself at around 36.4 so calpol should reduce the fever but not induce hypothermia. As soon as a temperature drops below 35oc the patient is officially hypothermic so with a 9 month old of around the 35oc mark I would absolutely be heading to A&E especially with concerns about sepsis. I run a first aid training company.

SD1978 · 04/04/2021 05:18

A look will not give her a low temperature- she clearly still needs the paint relief if she's unsettled, and giving her analgesia won't lower her temperature like that. If A&E told you to go back, more than reasonable to, but also sounds from your description she's u settled and in pain- definitely give her pain relief before you go- it'll be the first thing they ask you if you've done.

blackcat86 · 04/04/2021 05:19

P.s. that doctor sounds like a twat. Whenever I've taken my DC to A&E they couldn't administer calpol quick enough. You should also have been advised not to use anything ibuprofen based due to concerns about its effects with covid.

SD1978 · 04/04/2021 05:19

And any doctor who says pain relief causes hypothermia is an arse who should be struck off..........
