To take DD back to a&e

A couple of days ago my 9 month old seemed a little off and spiked a temperature of 39.2, calpol was only keeping it around the 39 mark. Called 111 who said to take her to a&e. Got there and it had risen to 40.1.

They checked her over, everything was fine although her throat was a little red but nothing that should make it spike like that. Took a blood sample and gave her iv antibiotics whilst we awaited the results. Her temp dropped and she perked up almost immediately.

Bloods came back and the docs words were “there is nothing there concerning, we think she has tonsillitis. We are going to send you home with antibiotics but if her temperature isn’t under control after two days, come back.”

Her temperature is now under control, probably too low if anything at 35, so I can’t give anymore calpol or ibuprofen.

But she still just isn’t right. She won’t play, she just sits there having a cuddle and randomly she cries out. She throws herself around and might settle in an awkward position for a bit before crying again. I probably managed to get her on the floor playing 3 times in the whole day for about a minute each time before the crying started again.

I wasn’t sure if she was just over tired last night so thought I’ll put her to bed and see in the morning. She just woke up for a feed and it’s taken me an hour to get her back to sleep as she was just crying and throwing herself around like she doesn’t know what she wants.

She’s had 3 full days of antibiotics (as apparently the iv antibiotics count as a full day) and am wondering what to do if she is the same in the morning. I don’t know if I’m over reacting and need to give the antibiotics longer to work, or if I’m under reacting and should be taking her back.

I would take her back now to be checked over. Trust your instincts that she stil isn’t well, you can never be too careful with babies better to be safe than sorry.
Its correct that you can’t make her temperature too low with Calpol.
Please take her back now.

FruitAndToot · 04/04/2021 05:24

Not worth the risk with children imo, I wouldn't care about potentially wasting their time if it's a child. Far far better to get checked. Please go.

Flakeymcwakey · 04/04/2021 05:25

Google suggests paracetamol does not lower normal body temp. Even if it did, it shouldn't happen through normal clinical dosing. The fact is, her temp is not under control and they said take her in if it's not. So take her in! Who cares if it was a scare about nothing?

punkingscissors · 04/04/2021 05:26

As a first aided if i saw a nine month old like that I'd be getting them to hospital.

feesh · 04/04/2021 05:31

You can’t bring body temperature down below normal with medicine. The only thing that could have done that is a severe infection,

Hospital. Now.

weddingwonders · 04/04/2021 05:31

Echoing others, please take your daughter to hospital, I'm studying medicine and a low temp is absolutely a sign of sepsis.

Harmonyrays · 04/04/2021 05:51

Hoping op is in her way to a&e!

Eatingsoupwithafork · 04/04/2021 06:05

Another vote for A&E here. I hope your DD is ok and makes a speedy recovery.

Cormoran · 04/04/2021 06:41

Even very high doses of calpol can only lower to 0.4 below baseline and you haven’t done that
You want the science here it is
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11441208/ several similar papers on how they ties to lower stroke patients temperature to increase their chances and it doesn’t go much below norma

SailingBuddy · 04/04/2021 06:49

Good luck OP. I hope you’re on your way to some medical treatment x

usedandabusedx1000 · 04/04/2021 07:31

Doctors/hospitals make mistakes. I was admitted with my 6 week old 4 times for days at a time and always sent on our way with him being worse by the time we left and then saying “milk allergy” “reflux” blah blah blah. I cannot tell you how many professionals we saw. Anyway turns out he had a life threatening condition and if it hadn’t been an amazing HV at a routine appointment saying I was right to be concerned and to take DS to an a&e an hour away NOW, I don’t believe he’d still be here.

Stop dithering and take her to a&e now. Please.

DartmoorDoughnut · 04/04/2021 07:32

How is she OP?

Lassolarry1980 · 04/04/2021 07:34

@Jeds55

Definitely take her back. We had 2 doctors appts, a 111 call, and 2 trips to A&E before we had to call an ambulance for our dd in December. Ended up in hospital for 5 days on IV AB. When they kept sending me away saying ear infection etc I just knew it was more serious and wish I'd pushed for bloods earlier. You know your hild best. After first A&E visit thry gave us letter to speed up the next visit (if within 72 hours). Hope it gets better
What was the diagnosis in the end?
beginningoftheend · 04/04/2021 07:38

I always think better to go than not when something is genuinely peculiar - and a low temp is peculiar.

Hard2Find09 · 04/04/2021 07:43

Please take her back in! Paracetamol won’t lower her body temp that much. She should be seen ASAP

Lassolarry1980 · 04/04/2021 07:48

Give the ward a ring.

They gave me number when I left with my daughter.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 04/04/2021 07:48

When i took my 9mo at the time in to a&e with what turned out to be a cold, they said they'd rather see 100 children that didn't need to be there than not see the 1 that did. Take her back in as you're worried, if nothing else they'll put your mind at rest.

BobbidyBob · 04/04/2021 07:52

I really hope you’ve already taken her in, and that’s why you haven’t replied yet.

Advice54321 · 04/04/2021 07:54

Thank you for all of your concern. We’re still in a&e waiting to be seen, which in itself is actually reassuring as she was clearly prioritised when we went the other day.

Her temp is still 35.8, which I think might be her usual temperature and she actually seems a lot happier this morning. She’s stopped crying, has been sitting on my lap playing with a toy and smiling and she’s eaten as well. She’s just fallen asleep in her pram so I’m sure we’ll get called in any second now!

OP posts:
CarlottaValdez · 04/04/2021 07:56

Hope she feels better soon, it’s awful when they’re not right.

picklemewalnuts · 04/04/2021 07:58

Oh they do that, D.C.! I had to take my 3 yr old, suspected meningitis. He was all floppy at the GPS and she sent us in to the paediatric ward ASAP people waiting for us at the door etc. As soon as he saw new faces, different environment etc he perked up and started bouncing about! So embarrassing, though a huge relief!

lunar1 · 04/04/2021 07:59

You've done the right thing taking her.

The advice your sister was given is absolutely untrue. Paracetamol and ibuprofen don't work like that.

Mmn654123 · 04/04/2021 07:59

@Advice54321

Ok thanks everyone. I did hear them mutter the word sepsis between themselves before they took the bloods but assumed it was nothing given the results.

Hopefully it’s just too much Calpol and ibuprofen which has lowered her temperature.

Too much calpol can’t cause a low temperature it can only reduce it to normal.
FishWithoutABike · 04/04/2021 08:02

Hope she gets seen soon. I’m sure it’s nothing but you have done the right thing getting it checked out. Sepsis isn’t something to be taken lightly.

Happylittlechicken123 · 04/04/2021 08:06

I hope she gets well soon OP xxx
