To take DD back to a&e

A couple of days ago my 9 month old seemed a little off and spiked a temperature of 39.2, calpol was only keeping it around the 39 mark. Called 111 who said to take her to a&e. Got there and it had risen to 40.1.

They checked her over, everything was fine although her throat was a little red but nothing that should make it spike like that. Took a blood sample and gave her iv antibiotics whilst we awaited the results. Her temp dropped and she perked up almost immediately.

Bloods came back and the docs words were “there is nothing there concerning, we think she has tonsillitis. We are going to send you home with antibiotics but if her temperature isn’t under control after two days, come back.”

Her temperature is now under control, probably too low if anything at 35, so I can’t give anymore calpol or ibuprofen.

But she still just isn’t right. She won’t play, she just sits there having a cuddle and randomly she cries out. She throws herself around and might settle in an awkward position for a bit before crying again. I probably managed to get her on the floor playing 3 times in the whole day for about a minute each time before the crying started again.

I wasn’t sure if she was just over tired last night so thought I’ll put her to bed and see in the morning. She just woke up for a feed and it’s taken me an hour to get her back to sleep as she was just crying and throwing herself around like she doesn’t know what she wants.

She’s had 3 full days of antibiotics (as apparently the iv antibiotics count as a full day) and am wondering what to do if she is the same in the morning. I don’t know if I’m over reacting and need to give the antibiotics longer to work, or if I’m under reacting and should be taking her back.

Maybe the doctor who spoke to your sister meant that she was giving her child calpol over too long a time. Using paracetomol for days at a time can be dangerous for the kidneys and liver if its not carefully prescribed and watched, especially in a child and especially in one that is ill ..... if they arent drinking much, as the kidneys need to have fluids to process the drug

My 16yr old sons temperature has always been around 35-36 degrees, for him 37 is a mild fever 🤷🏻‍♀️

"Please read my posts again Denver.

I absolutely encouraged OP to take her baby for further medical treatment."

I read them. You only suggested it after getting pulled up on being wrong.

No matter how you dress it up.

I read them. You only suggested it after getting pulled up on being wrong.

Nope. Not at all.

I got nothing wrong - low temperature on its own is not an indicator of sepsis, tho any parent with some concerns should seek advice. Posters were talking about low temperature like it in itself was some particular indicator of sepsis. Which is incorrect.

Seeing as you've a problem reading posts tho, here's my first post, at 8.19, where I said:

But regarding your DD, go back as you have concerns

You're welcome 🙂

The logic that calpol continues to lower temp is utterly bizarre, calpol is paracetamol.. of that was true then people who took a massive overdose of paracetamol would also be hypothermic... but they aren't because I see them in A&E..

Paracetamol will lower your temperature if you have a high one, ie you are pyrexic.. it will also get rid of pain if you have it.. if you take too much of it it will kill your liver that's all.

Good Morning,

Sorry to jump on this post but I'm hoping some of you may have some reassurance for me.

On the 26th March (early hours) my DD who is 18months fell really poorly really suddenly.. by 10am we was in hospital 12 noon she had her first lot of oral antibiotics and they wanted to monitor her (thankfully they did) as she took a turn for the worst and by 4pm they confirmed suspected sepsis... she was cannulated, IV antibiotics administered and transferred to a different hospital via ambulance.

She spent 5 days on the word on IV antibiotics, her temp stopped on the 4th day, and then she did another 3 days on Intermuscular Antibiotics on daily visits to the children's ward.

She's lots better now, still not 100%, really clingy (through trauma I guess) and her eating and drinking is what it was. Also, she's still really wobbly on her feet which I can only assume is from the injections and still catching up on her sleep... but other than that, she's not laid up poorly or no temps etc!

But it's me!! I can't help feeling so nervous and bloody anxious about if she's still poorly!

Anyone been through anything similar? How did you over come it :(

Thank you

Ella
