To wonder why anyone would get a takeaway roast?

I get supporting local pubs, but I just don't understand why anyone would get a takeaway roast?

Pubs are charging £15 for a one course Sunday roast (every week, not just Easter). Which isn't exactly cheap. I would have thought this would be pretty grim once you get it home, and a home cooked roast is far superior.

Fuck off

Thread about roast dinners Grin

I think I've reached peak MN for today.

Denny53 · 03/04/2021 23:05

I do understand why you’d want to get a takeaway roast dinner - although the few I’ve had have never been as nice as my own.
I saw an ad yesterday for a well known chain of ‘French’ restaurants. But they’re offering for £50 for two people was an uncooked roast. A joint of beef, lamb pork or chicken and the veg, potatoes gravy etc. If it were cooked, then fair enough!
Why would you not just go to your local Marks and buy your own prepared joint veg etc? In fact they have an ‘Dine in’ offer of an Easter roast for just £20. !

U2HasTheEdge · 03/04/2021 23:07

But you don't have to stand there and watch it. You can go off and do lots of other more useful/fun things whilst it's cooking.

What kind of roast are you having?

Like other people have said, it is time consuming.

Basting potatoes every now and then, making gravy, juggling oven space, making Yorkshires and so on is not something you can just bung in the oven then leave. The prep and timings is time consuming.

I haven't had a takeaway roast, but I think I might soon after reading this thread.

PyongyangKipperbang · 03/04/2021 23:08

Perhaps if more people did this then I and thousands of others wouldnt have lost our jobs in the industry thanks to fucking covid. Just a thought.....

Quaagars · 03/04/2021 23:11

Who even has a Sunday roast anyway?

Lots of people

Notgoodatchoosingnames · 03/04/2021 23:14

Honestly, because I want the local restaurants to survive!! Plus its advance to have a great roast without me cooking it. Outside of lockdown, I'm not sure how often I would do it,but currently it's a really delicious treat which hopefully helps local restaurants

Quaagars · 03/04/2021 23:14

Exactly, as I said, people can make them easily enough, you've got to be mindful of times and what needs doing when.
Sometimes you think fuck it and order one cooked for you lol.
We've got a cafe a 5 minute walk from here and they do amazing roasts, never bought one before lockdown but have been doing recently and they're amazing.
So much food.

It does sound expensive but consider how much it costs to buy all the stuff for a roast dinner. It's not like it comes free. I wish we were getting a takeaway roast tomorrow instead of me dragging my pregnant body round the kitchen peeling and chopping and roasting.

me4real · 03/04/2021 23:20

Some quite posh places are doing really nice roasts.

And it is quite a bit of work.

Cokie3 · 03/04/2021 23:25

@GreenSlide Then GET a takeaway roast! It's ridiculous to be doing all that when pregnant. And why is your spouse too selfish and lazy, you shouldn't be lifting a finger! So, why do it? Does anyone really enjoy a roast that much? I don't think so. I don't know anyone that does. It's not worth it, and far, far more enjoyable things you can have. I'll never understand UK's obsession with roasts. So not even half-way worth it! Even if you desperately want a roast that much, why not buy a cooked roast chicken, and then that just leaves you to do the vegies? Or buy coleslaw/pasta salad/potato salad to go with the chicken? So many options, but people in the UK are so traditional and boring, all slaving over an oven. F that!
chichichibaby · 03/04/2021 23:27

Because I hate cooking, I can't cook a roast, I hate all the mess but I want my family to enjoy it and because our local pub does a fantastic take away - we will continue to order Sunday roasts from them until we can go and eat in the pub like we used to!

UnlikelybutTrue · 03/04/2021 23:30

If I could afford to I would order one because I’m absolutely shit at cooking meat.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 03/04/2021 23:30

Because, after working all day on a Sunday I can't be arsed to deal with all that cooking a roast entails, plus the washing up.

GreenSlide · 03/04/2021 23:31

Fucking hell calm down @Cokie3. I've already bought the chicken so I might as well cook it. DH will help a bit but will mainly be entertaining toddler DS. I don't think pregnancy is really a reason to sit on my arse not lifting a finger for 40 weeks. And I don't really want coleslaw and pasta salad, I don't like them very much. I want roast potatoes Confused

GuildfordGal · 03/04/2021 23:32

It wasn't directed at the OP. It was directed at a GF who was telling me to chill and take a deep relaxing breath

I know...it's the fact that no thread can ever be so innocuous on MN that it won't provoke a FUCK OFF at some point Grin

Cokie3 · 03/04/2021 23:33

@GreenSlide Wow....Calm down yourself. Confused

moochingtothepub · 03/04/2021 23:34

Our local pub is charging £32 for two roasts and two puddings. We order the beef followed by the spotted dick. I can't buy the right amount of beef so it's minimum of £6-7 for a joint, leftovers yes but I don't want leftovers really, veg all in too big packs too so struggling not to have waste, time in oven, spotted dick takes nearly 2 hours to steam, got to cost me £15 including gas and electric. For 2 pub deals are just convenient. I now have the students home so I'll cook

Quaagars · 03/04/2021 23:35

Reading all these calm down posts is making me want to go "eh, eh, calm down, calm down! Scouser stylee lol Grin

krankykittykat · 03/04/2021 23:37

How does however other people want to have their ruast affect you exactly?

cupoftea2021 · 03/04/2021 23:44

No dirty oven
Only home once a week between work and commitments
Take 2-3 hrs of being around the oven
Unable to cook well
Can not bare the smell of roasting meat--as someone once mentioned
easy that for the extra cost.
Now I want a roast umm

chalktheblockwithglitterchalk · 03/04/2021 23:46

The businesses are just trying to stay afloat and make money.

billybear · 04/04/2021 00:02

my local does it for £6.50 its amazing

Singlenotsingle · 04/04/2021 00:07

Wonderful. Me and my partner regularly have a takeaway roast delivered. Meat, roasties, stuffing, Yorkshires, cabbage, cauli, peas, carrots and gravy. No washing up. Perfect

maddening · 04/04/2021 00:57

A. Pub near me always has done takeaway roast, plus other dishes, but it is £7.5 and V reasonable, and V good quality, saves cooking
