To wonder why anyone would get a takeaway roast?

I get supporting local pubs, but I just don't understand why anyone would get a takeaway roast?

Pubs are charging £15 for a one course Sunday roast (every week, not just Easter). Which isn't exactly cheap. I would have thought this would be pretty grim once you get it home, and a home cooked roast is far superior.

What with this and the why thank the bus driver thread I wonder what's going to be the next thing that needs spelling out for someone.

BonnieDundee · 03/04/2021 22:18

Perhaps because.the OP comes.across as dismissive, judgy and morally superior?

Snowrabbit · 03/04/2021 22:21

@BonnieDundee only to someone very insecure! She is stating she thinks the price and relative quality isn't worth it and wonders why people bother! I'm sure she can fathom some reasons but seems mad to her. Hardly "dismissive, judgy and morally superior" Deep breath and relax!

QueenPaw · 03/04/2021 22:22

My local does a delicious one (menu changes weekly)
I live alone and it would cost me that to buy all the veg, potatoes, meat etc

To wonder why anyone would get a takeaway roast?

Something strange afoot on MN today
Thewinterofdiscontent · 03/04/2021 22:25

Why is everyone saying Op is being thick/unimaginative/lacking empathy etc?. Or the worse line ever “people like different things”.Duh. Obviously, but that wasn’t the AIBU.

Op is asking why people buy them not debating whether they should or not. The op says they’re expensive and imagines them to be grim as you have to get them home first. That’s all. All it needs is peopke to say what’s good about them YABU or that they are overpriced horrors YANBU.

Quaagars · 03/04/2021 22:27

How does someone manage to get deleted on a (fairly) inoffensive "AIBU to think why the fk does someone get a takeaway Sunday dinner" lol
I'm assuming it was someone spamming the boards with self promotion or something, otherwise it's probably an alternative of going off into an expletive driven rant at others daring to order in Sunday dinner or assumed people were calling their roasts shit or something Grin

colouringindoors · 03/04/2021 22:30

I bought a takeaway roast for one, as a single parent, when my kids were with their dad one Sunday.

It was Amazing, roast meat, massive yorkshire pud, roast potatoes, three veg, gravy. Worth every penny.

OP open your mind Grin

HOkieCOkie · 03/04/2021 22:36

Ppl who live alone and fancy a roast?

ToffeePennie · 03/04/2021 22:38

Because (and I cannot stress this enough) I simply CANT cook a roast. Not one that’s hot, edible and ready at the same time. With me it’s choose one.
I am SHIT at roasts. Dreading tomorrow simply because I’ve agreed to a roast beef dinner and I’m bound to fuck it up.

Theunamedcat · 03/04/2021 22:38

When my uncle was in-between wives (he has had 4 i believe) he used to order a takeaway Sunday lunch from the pub take it home with him after his lunchtime pint and he would wash and return the plate during the week there was simply no point in cooking meat three veg potatoes and roast potatoes for one person

lonesome2night · 03/04/2021 22:38

Tomorrow we plan on a takeaway roast. By the time I've made a roast for the 4 of us (joint of meat 2-3 hours plus resting depending on cut and size), veggies, stuffing etc... it means I'm going to be stuck for at least 4-5 hours, and then there's the washing up. I work 3 jobs (1x full time, 2x part time) and am studying 2 part time courses. I work weekdays hubby works weekends. This is the first day off we've had together since Christmas Day and the last we'll get until august, after which it will again be Christmas so I'm buggered if I'm spending half a day in the kitchen! Phone order in, have a glass or two of wine, order arrives, serve, eat, put 4x plates (4 of us here) in dishwasher and empty containers in bin. Job done.

MollyButton · 03/04/2021 22:40

I'd quite like it - but then I live with Vegan's, so can't be bothed to do a roast just for me.

Pomegranatespompom · 03/04/2021 22:40

The £20 M&S roast was fab, delicious and easy to cook. Not sure when the offer ends buy may be some in store on Monday, there was supply today,

vdbfamily · 03/04/2021 22:41

there are people doing it regularly to support their local pubs during lockdown so that they are still there when we re emerge from this nightmare.

overwork · 03/04/2021 22:43

Well one of us doesn't eat meat, but all love a roast! Much prefer a takeaway than cooking separate means. Though, what I'd really prefer is to eat it at the blinking restaurant

overwork · 03/04/2021 22:43

Meals!

waitingpatientlyforspring · 03/04/2021 22:52

I'm vegi so roast dinners even when out is not a favourite meal. I think if it was the two of us I would consider it. Here £8-£10 is normal so for two £18 isn't to bad if its good. Our next door neighbours often get roast delivered.

SuperCaliFragalistic · 03/04/2021 22:57

I wouldn't want a reheated roast dinner (too many memories of my ex-MIL reheating roasts with soggy vegetables and smelly gravy) and I'm happy to cook a roast myself. But I can envisage that some people might like it. All the pubs round here do a roaring trade in take away roasts.

Justgorgeous · 03/04/2021 23:01

I hate take-aways and can’t wait to go and sit in a restaurant. We occasionally get a take-away curry but then I just wish I had cooked one myself.

Cokie3 · 03/04/2021 23:03

Who even has a Sunday roast anyway? My grandparents stopped doing that back in the 80s. Aint no one got time to cook a whole roast every week.

Secondly unless you live in the tropics, why would a roast be 'grim' (grim meaning diabolical or near death)? If you mean it would spoil, like I said you'd have to live in the tropics or something. How would a roast spoil in the short time between the pub to home? Unless you have a 6 hour trek home or something? Your post is quite strange all round.

Butteredtoast55 · 03/04/2021 23:04

We do this occasionally and it's glorious. No prepping or cooking on a busy Sunday (usually church service and school work to do later or gardening or ironing) ...just sitting together with a glass of wine and a lovely meal.
I'm a vegetarian and my DH loves beef. Adult DC's love pork and turkey...so everyone gets what they want and four meals are comfortably enough for five of us. Hardly any washing up and it all heats up beautifully (although the pub is only five minutes walk away so not a problem anyway). For the record I make a great roast dinner but it's lovely not to have to.
Does that help you as you wonder why anyone would do it?
