I personally don’t but I know many do

Nice as an occasional treat especially in lockdown but can't justify it every week. Last nights fish and chips came to £36 for 3 adults and 1 child and I'm shocked at that because 2 of us adults shared 1 portion of fish and chips to save on calories!! I was a Hmm at the price!

lazylinguist · 03/04/2021 08:36

No. It's spending money on something you want and enjoy. Presumably you wouldn't do it otherwise, so how can it be a waste of money (unless it turns out to be disappointingly bad, of course)?

Lovemusic33 · 03/04/2021 08:37

Often I do feel they are a waste of money. I only really get a take away if I have been unwell and can’t be bothered to cook or we are out of food, I think the only take away that’s not disappointing is fish and chips and it’s the only thing we will all eat. The dc love pizza but it’s so expensive and always makes me feel ill afterwards.

Standrewsschool · 03/04/2021 08:38

Chinese - no, and cheaper than going out for a meal.
Fish and chips - no
Pizza - yes, takeaway pizzas are extortionate

underneaththeash · 03/04/2021 08:38

Some are and some aren't. We live in an expensive part of the UK and takeaways tend to be expensive.
Our local proper pizza place does amazing pizzas that I can't re-create at home and we probably get one a couple of times a month.
The Chinese/Thai options less so - easily £100+ for the 5 of us, usually tepid and I can make better at home.
Indian is better value - but DH finds them greasier than I'd make.
I also worry about the welfare standards of the meat that they use in them.

I try and do something that is less work for me once a week, we've done a few "at home" meals - so where restaurants cook things and then you re-eat stuff to varying degrees of success.
The Rick Stein one was nice, but then we had one called "Nico at home" which was revolting.

We're getting one from the local 1 Michelin star restaurant this evening which to be is good value, it's different food, stuff that I couldn't cook myself but it's not cheap.

candlemasbells · 03/04/2021 08:39

I think alcohol and going to the hair dressers/beauty treatments are a waste of money. Takeaways are a time saving tasty treat. I have one a week usually curry. I would have fish and chips but DS doesn't like chip shop chips so there's no point as I'd still have to cook. I buy a few nice ready meals as well.

I am the same . I cannot work out why a dominos is so much more expensive than a shop bought pizza, but I am not a huge pizza fan so maybe that is why
cricketmum84 · 03/04/2021 08:41

@Blankscreen

We've started getting a takeaway a week and we take it in turns to choose. But some of them are really expensive.

We got pizza from the Inependent Italian pizza place it was lovely but £67!!!

Indian is about £60

Dh wanted Thai last week and it was going to be nearlt£80 so we got grilled chicken kebabs which work out about £35.

Fish and chips is £9.50 each for cod and chips.

Once thing go back to normal we will definitely cut back

Wow that's some expensive takeaways! How many people is that for?

We spent £31 last night for 2 adults and 2 hungry teens!

reluctantbrit · 03/04/2021 08:41

I do but mainly because it is difficult to get a take away which stays hot and isn't indian, thai or chinese.

We started eating them more in lockdown, also to support the restaurants we normally go to. But too often the food is only warm and I just find the way to get the food in container just depressing, if I spend money on food I want to be served.

And lots of popular restaurants have long delivery times or you need to collect. If I take that into account I am faster cooking a curry or doing steak and chips myself.

NewAgeWiccan · 03/04/2021 08:43

Yes I do. The amount spent on a takeaway could cover a weekly shop for us, and while I enjoy takeaway, it's a very rare thing as I feel guilty due to the cost.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 03/04/2021 08:43

We have the occasional takeaway as a treat. Pre lockdown, maybe twice a year.

In the current lockdown our village pub has been hosting different food trucks on a semi regular basis in the car park. We've had three of those since Christmas to try and support the pub.

Flowers24 · 03/04/2021 08:47

Love takeaways, have one every weekend, its a lovely treat !

Flowers24 · 03/04/2021 08:48

I think these things are a waste of money:

hairdressers
nail bars
lash ' tints' and all that sort of thing
Ugg boots

!!

CeeJay81 · 03/04/2021 08:49

Wow some of these take away prices are extortionate but we live rurally and only have independent places nearby with no home delivery option. We don't spend more than £25 for the 4 of us. If It was £60 a time it'd be a once a month affair.

Tumbleweed101 · 03/04/2021 08:49

I’d rather do the whole eating out experience than get a takeaway given they are same price. However I can’t get a takeaway delivered where I am so have to drive into town to get one so turns into a long way if getting food. Might feel different if I was able to get it delivered to the house.

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/04/2021 08:50

I do. I'd rather cook.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 03/04/2021 08:51

In general yes. There may be some circumstances where I feel I have done the right thing by having one, such as when on holiday.

Benjispruce2 · 03/04/2021 08:52

Mostly disappointing. We don’t have a great variety though. We like cooking so would rather buy special ingredients and make something nice at home for a treat.

Frazzled2207 · 03/04/2021 08:54

We have them rarely (once a month max) but really enjoy so not a waste of money at all in our house.
Someone getting two or three a week would however be wasting their money in my view though I’d worry more about the unhealthy aspect

Arbadacarba · 03/04/2021 08:54

I view them as expensive and very fattening, my DH views them as a waste of money, so we very rarely have them - perhaps two or three times a year at most.

There are things we couldn't replicate at home - anything that needs a pizza oven or a deep fryer.

PeggyHill · 03/04/2021 08:58

I think it totally depends on your lifestyle, finances, and how often you're having them.

We get them about once a fortnight and we really enjoy it when we do. The rest of time we're cooking from scratch, we never use ready made stuff, so it really is a nice change of pace to occassionally order food. So I wouldn't call it a waste.

We also have enough disposable income to do this without it having much effect on anything else. When I was younger and had very little disposable income i probably would have felt like it was a waste to order takeaway. The cost of the takeaway could probably have done me a week's worth of groceries.

towers14 · 03/04/2021 09:00

I consider Starbucks, Costa etc an outrageous waste of money. My 'poor' student child thinks nothing of spending £4.75 on a frappe!! I'm wtf? Why?

Clutterbugsmum · 03/04/2021 09:01

Yes I do think they are waste of money.

But we do have them very occasionally. We had fish and chips last week which wasn't to bad £35 for 6 meals (although we tend to just order fish, saveloy and pies and just 1 portion small/large chips rather then chips with each meal). Yes it was nice but not something what we would want to eat more then every 3/4 months.

Last time we had a Chinese and it was £70 which did 7 meals. I spend about £100 per week on food and household cleaners, for 5 of us (2 adults and 17,13,12) so yes while it's very nice I can't justify the cost. So now Chinese are going to be 'birthday' treats from now on.

Hoppinggreen · 03/04/2021 09:06

It is a waste but so are so many other things
The issue I have with them is mostly the thought is nicer than the reality, I can make nicer myself
The only exception is a couple of Indian ladies who have set up a home food delivery service and their food is amazing

MrsWP · 03/04/2021 09:08

They're not a waste if we really want one and enjoy it.

Haven't had a takeaway since October time. We do it very rarely.

Often though it can seem so expensive for mediocre food and indigestion.

Would rather spend more in the supermarket- but maybe I'm old/boring.
