I personally don’t but I know many do

I don't tend to buy them as we don't get delivery here (rural) and pre covid we went out for a pub meal with dc about once a fortnight. So that was a treat. It wouldnt really feel a treat to have a takeaway if I've to travel miles and miles to bring one home. I do get dc a Mcdonalds once a month though.

Strangekindofwoman · 02/04/2021 23:17

I don't like cooking. So love a takeaway.

oopsydaisyyy · 02/04/2021 23:17

@moochingtothepub

It's a treat, can afford it but they are pretty unhealthy and actually I can cook better Indian food especially. A meal for 2 is around £25 at least here, probably nearer £30
you can get 2 x 12 inch pizza, a curry with naan, a cheeseburger with chips and a drink for £9.99 local to me 😅
RightOnTheEdge · 02/04/2021 23:17

The price always makes me wince because I really shouldn't on my budget but as a single mum not having to cook or wash up for one night is worth it.

I think it depends on the takeaway though.
Good food that everyone enjoys is never a waste of money.
If it ends up being a bit rubbish then sometimes there is regret and you wish you hadn't spent the money on it so that is a waste.

memberofthewedding · 02/04/2021 23:18

I send for a Chinese banquet once a month and the left over last me for several days afterwards. Its an occasional treat but i would not do it every week.

Potpourriandpennysweets · 02/04/2021 23:18

Last time my family got a takeaway it was £23
Today I did a Fakeaway it was £19

It was a lot more work, so honestly I think it is worth it sometimes to just get a takeaway. That said the Fakeaway was lower fat, higher protein, much more veg, and really tasty. We get them occasionally as a treat now, used to get McDonalds/Greggs/Meal Deal somewhere about once a week when we used to do trips to the mall or day trips though. And we never eat out in the evening or go on a weekend anymore either. We spend more on treats at home now, and I cook more so takeaway is more for the night off from cooking than eating something interesting these days!

View them as a treat which during lockdown have had more often because normally we would eat out.

Could have them more often but never do

Susie477 · 02/04/2021 23:21

No, I don’t.

A takeaway is a well-earned treat at the end of a long week. Just because it’s a takeaway, I doesn’t have to be rubbish. We have enjoyed superb fish & chips tonight from a shop which has won multiple national awards.

Leeds2 · 02/04/2021 23:21

I love Chinese or Indian takeaway, but haven't had them much since the first lockdown began (twice, I think). I do view them as a treat, and not a waste of money, but I'm not sure I would want to eat too many of them even if I could afford it.
If I was short of money, I would think it a bit of a waste because you can get more for your money at the supermarket.

Thepennyhasdroppedq · 02/04/2021 23:22

After I've eaten the food yes

MixedUpFiles · 02/04/2021 23:22

I hate cooking, have a generous amount of disposable income, and have access to heathy takeaway options. Quinoa, grilled chicken, and a generous serving of veggies made for me doesn’t hurt anything but my bank account. So for me it’s one of the things worthy of my disposable income, because I really hate cooking that much.

NeedaLittleNap · 02/04/2021 23:23

Ok when it's done as a treat. Now that the children eat adult portions and takeaways costs twice what they used to, it's starting to feel like a waste if we do it just because we are too knackered to cook. I try to save it for times when I will positively enjoy it.

caringcarer · 02/04/2021 23:25

We have a Chinese on a Sunday night because they are not busy so we can get it delivered really hot. We have either a fish and chips or KFC one day in week after sporting activity as too late to cook from scratch. We eat.healthy good other days though. We enjoy them and can afford them but if we could not afford them we would cut them out to save money.

Sparklesocks · 02/04/2021 23:29

No, I think they have value in being a ‘treat’, and in saving time cooking etc - and in lockdown they’ve been something small but nice to break up the monotony when you can’t go out to eat.

Of course if you’re ordering them all the time then they become expensive and yes it’s probably a waste of money compared to regular cooking. They also probably feel less ‘special’ too.

HairyPits · 02/04/2021 23:30

I rarely get take away.
My cooking is nicer and you generally feel a bit greasy and ‘meh’ after eating them.

hahaboink · 02/04/2021 23:30

We’ve got a takeaway every Friday night pretty much in the last year. We’re in London and so the choice is pretty good especially with lots of restaurants who didn’t usually do takeaway doing it during lockdowns. It’s not cheap but we can afford it and it’s a nice way to end the week. I’m not paying any travel costs at the moment either so have some spare cash.

caringcarer · 02/04/2021 23:31

We have 2 takeaways now each week but before Covid we only had perhaps one s fortnight as we ate out twice a week. Have sporty son who we take to sports every night so while he is playing cricket got 2 hours DH and I pop in for meal on our own.

People saying £15 is cheap for a takeaway for me and DH (that makes 4 meals for us,) THIS poster got one for her whole family for £23.

Just because YOU can only find expensive takeaways, (or more likely, spend shit loads of money on one Wink ,) that doesn't mean everyone else has the same experience.

Yeah we DO spend £15 on a takeaway that lasts us for 4 meals... OK, so sometimes £16.50 to £17, but usually around £15.

Why is it so hard to believe others have different experiences?

FireflyRainbow · 02/04/2021 23:33

Absolutely not a waste

yeOldeTrout · 02/04/2021 23:35

Expensive so occasional treat. Not nice if eaten too often anyway.

FortunesFave · 02/04/2021 23:38

We tend to yes...because we can usually cook much better food ourselves. Greasy Chinese food is never what you expect it to be...pizza is usually disappointing too. The only food we do love and get now and then is Indian food but then the restaurant we get it from is amazing.

DioneTheDiabolist · 02/04/2021 23:39

As long as it's eaten, it isn't a waste of money.

I have wasted money following "low cost" spice + pulses recipes. They may be cheap (after you've bought the stuff in), but no one ate them so a total waste.

CirqueDeMorgue · 02/04/2021 23:41

Hmm yes if it's more than once a week otherwise I can justify it because there's generally a discount. It makes me feel like shit physically though, every time but I still like it. Once a fortnight is a good compromise.

LaurieFairyCake · 02/04/2021 23:41

Nope.

It's just food 🤷‍♀️

Loshad · 02/04/2021 23:41

Would not eat a cheap takeaway if I have any choice over the matter ( like literally what do you think is going into your meal for 2 that has been cooked by a commercial outlet and still gives them a profit at that price?)
We comfortably fall into the highest earner slots and both have busy jobs but have a takeaway about every 6-8 weeks or less. Would far rather spend my food money on locally reared organic beef and lamb, on the local chap who grows veggies shoots, etc
