I personally don’t but I know many do

It's a treat for us, so only a waste of money if we get a disappointing one. We are too rural for most deliveries so pre-order and collect so don't get them often at all.

Parker231 · 05/04/2021 09:56

We’ve ordered a takeaway to be delivered for lunch (it’s a Bank Holiday and we can’t be bothered to cook). We ordered two portions but will easily do the three of us.

Meat Mezethes
Houmous, Tzatziki, Taramosalata, Tabbouleh, Mixed Salad, Olives, Feta Cheese and Pita Bread.

Spanakotyropitakia, Dolmathes, Kieftethes, Haloumi, Loukanika, Stefado, and Fasolia. Lamb Kebabs with Rice.

Seafood Mezethes
Taramosalata, Houmous, Tzatziki, Tabbouleh, Mixed Salad, Olives, Spanakotyropitakia, Feta Cheese and Pita Bread.

Kalamari, Whitebait, Jumbo Prawns, Salmon, Seafood Kebabs with Rice.

We have actually got less takeaways. A Chinese sometime does us twice. We have a local restaurant who has a separate takeaway. We had a roast dinner each last week and sometimes we get a large tub of Irish stew for £4.50 which is adequate for the 2 of us. Tbh making meals everyday has become a pita and a takeaway is a welcome respite. Also at least there's no waste not like the stuff that gets bought and never used for one reason or another.

PositiveLife · 05/04/2021 10:02

Generally yes, in the sense that I feel like I've spent too much on takeaway. However, it's often what has kept me sane. Stressful job, single parent and I wouldn't have coped without it some nights. I'm hoping to cut down in my new job because it shouldn't be as difficult time-wise

Parker231 · 05/04/2021 10:05

Cricket - bring some wine and I’ll make room at the table for you!

rookiemere · 05/04/2021 10:10

Ooh @Parker231 can I come too- sounds amazing Smile.
Am planning to order similar for my birthday treat tomorrow evening.

BadLad · 05/04/2021 10:12

I would only see it as a waste if I bought it and didn't eat it or didn't get any benefit from it.

But when I do get one, I really enjoy it (the taste, the not having to cook and the reduced washing up), so I do benefit.

Life would be so full if we never spent any money on extravagances or luxuries.

Scottishskifun · 05/04/2021 10:20

We get a takeaway once or twice a month usually when both exhausted and running out of food/inspiration!

We get a fancy takeaway for birthdays (the heat at home things from restaurants) or special occasions.

We are currently saving a fortune from no cafes at the weekend out for lunches with toddler so it's nice once in a while not to cook.
A Chinese costs us about £25 and usually does us lunch and dinner the next day.

Maudythebudgie · 05/04/2021 10:25

We spend too much on take away... but supporting the local economy 😁. I can justify many luxuries...

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 05/04/2021 10:28

Once in a blue moon I buy fish and chips which are generally ok.

I've had a takeaway at friends houses several times where they've raved about how great the food is. When it arrives I'm always disappointed so I never bother with takeaways myself.

As I've said on several threads before, I honestly had no idea that people spent so much on takeaways or had so many until lockdown.

In answer to your question - yes I think they're a waste of money.

thetemptationofchocolate · 05/04/2021 10:40

We live a long way from anywhere so takeaways are a rare treat. I don't think it's a waste of money if you don't have them often tbh. They are a treat and with what's happened over the last year, what other treats have we been able to have?
We tend to get them from our nearest pub. We like this pub, the food is great and if we don't support them now, they may not be able to stay in business after the past year's closures.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 05/04/2021 10:44

Time = money
Never used to get them
Now I’m a LP my usage of both processed food and takeaways has increased

It not good
But it’s what we do to Survive

FrankskinnerscRoc · 05/04/2021 10:53

@UhtredRagnarson

Considering I cant ever hope to make food as nice as a takeaway it’s certainly not a waste for us.
Your cooking must be pretty bad then.

Now I'm going to have to say that it's a waste of money for me as I've rarely had a decent one, so I gave up on them a long time ago.

Ifailed · 05/04/2021 10:58

Some of the cheap takeaways described on here are a waste of money - once you factor in the cost of staff, premises, heating and all the other overheads of running a business the actual amount spent on ingredients has to be pennies, you really would be better off opening a tin of soup.

Sundances · 05/04/2021 11:01

Takeaways seem to generate a huge amount of recycling (if people do recycle).

rookiemere · 05/04/2021 11:02

Am I the only one here who really hates tinned soup?
I don't mind the boxes of fresh stuff in the chilled container, but tinned tastes tinny bleugh.

I do agree though that it's a shame to pay for takeaway and not enjoy it. Far better to have some freezer back ups if that's the case - I keep in M&S battered fish portions and frozen twice cooked chips as a pleasant enough emergency meal.

Chickydoo · 05/04/2021 16:35

The average cost for a Chinese or Indian takeaway in my area is at least £50-£60 for a family of 4 or 5
It's cheaper to buy the Indian ready meals in Tesco/Waitrose etc.
and use own rice.
Even fish & chips is expensive, we have probably had a takeaway 3 times during the last year, It's simply too overpriced. A local gastro pub price list was extortionate last time I looked £14.00 for fish pie for 1 and lasagne was £12.00
I would rather save money & make my own.

cricketmum84 · 05/04/2021 16:51

I would feel so depressed if my DH said "ooh instead of that amazing grilled lamb you were wanting to order I've cracked open a tin of condensed mushroom soup!" Definitely LTB territory!

You really wouldn't.
We have an absolute glut of Syrian and Turkish takeaways near me all with excellent food hygiene ratings.
I'd rather a massive slice of Fatayer and hummus or a falafel in Pitta with salad for £3 than tinned soup. Its tastier and fills me up more.i feel like I've had a decent meal.

ginghamstarfish · 05/04/2021 17:07

I do, but why would you care what others think? If you want takeaways that's your choice!

Troublewaters2021 · 05/04/2021 17:26

We order a Sunday roast once a month

And the children have McDonald’s once a month.

That's how I feel.

I'd rather buy beauty products or clothes🙂

Littlechickenlegs · 05/04/2021 17:56

Dh and I are both more than decent cooks with similar palates who like good quality food so a bog standard takeaway has no appeal. However our local Lebanese restaurant is on another level so a takeaway from there is always worth the money. We've never had a bad meal from there in the 7 years we have been customers.

CrikeyBananas · 05/04/2021 18:30

Like many others on the thread who aren't in the UK - Asian city. Takeaway delivery excellent variety and probably same price as cooking, so we have takeaway for about half our meals. UK takeaway generally poor choice, poor quality, very expensive.
