I personally don’t but I know many do

Yes

LindaEllen · 02/04/2021 23:48

I don't think anything's a waste of money if you get enjoyment out of it. Obviously there's a hierarchy of importance if your funds are limited, but if I want a dominoes I'm bloody getting one!

LookAChicken · 02/04/2021 23:51

If it's delicious it's not a waste.
However I struggle to find even passable takeaway where I live.

Longdistance · 02/04/2021 23:51

Yes, it can be a waste of money. We have it once a week.
We had friends who would just eat take aways. We’d look in their fridge for food and they’d be nothing in there. They never had any money either, always skint. We’d invite then to ours on a Sunday for bbq (we lived in Oz) and my food disappeared quickly. Fuck knows where their food was? They never contributed when we invited them.
I just don’t see how people can live like that? I really don’t.

diwrnachoflleyn · 02/04/2021 23:53

No. Love them. Prefer to eat out.

HaveringWavering · 02/04/2021 23:54

@littlepattilou no need to go on the defensive, nobody is accusing you of lying they are asking where you live! And that is relevant because ingredients cost roughly the same all over the U.K. , most takeaways charge a similar markup, and minimum wage is the same U.K.- wide so the difference must be the rent of the premises.

Landofthefree · 02/04/2021 23:57

No, not a waste if it’s something you enjoy. Having takeaways delivered once a fortnight helped to get me through the last year.

eaglemoss · 02/04/2021 23:59

A bit, which is a bit illogical because I don't mind eating at restaurants! But for me I really like being able to completely relax in a restaurant, having someone take your order and clear plates etc, as well as people-watching and going out somewhere new. It's just not the same being at home and knowing you have to do the plating/assemble bits of food and clear up afterwards.

Sometimes we get a 'posh' ready meal deal instead which I find better value for money if you can't be bothered to cook. Probably no healthier though. We never used to do takeaways pre-Covid, but we have had the occasional one in the past year and they've always been a bit disappointing.

I think it depends on your priorities and how much spare money you have. People buy nicer cars than the basic car they "need" and don't buy the cheapest clothes on the market. I don't buy many take aways because a lot of them are high fat food and I prefer quick cooked home food. Eating out is different. I wouldn't say it's a waste of money though. Most things are a waste of money once you have the basics. My bike and sewing machine may be viewed as a waste of money as cheaper ones are out there. I like them and had the money to spend on them though.

stayathomer · 03/04/2021 00:04

When I was younger and did it as a weekly thing, now I think 'that was money I could have used' but actually now we don't even have it once a month so I'd definitely see it as a treat. Eating out to me personally is more of a waste of money, I think home cooked food is nicer and would rather sit in a pub then be pushed out of a restaurant after an hour and a half and a huge bill!!

Cynderella · 03/04/2021 00:05

I'm not a brilliant cook, but I prefer my equivalent to a takeaway, except for fish and chips. I resent the cost of a takeaway - I'd rather sit in a restaurant. But on those days when cooking is a massive chore and going out isn't on the cards, a takeaway is a treat.

Pinkchocolate · 03/04/2021 00:05

I don’t, I care and cook for six people daily so on a Saturday I don’t cook. We have a takeaway which means I have around 2 hours to myself or to do other things, it’s well worth the money.

notacooldad · 03/04/2021 00:08

We have some really good value takeaways where I live. Theres a lot of.iddle Eastern ones that are really cheap, tasty pretty healthy and lots of food for your money that it can be enough for lunch next day.
A couple do absolutely huge slices of spinach and cheese Fatayer for two people for £3.
I don't think it is a waste at all!

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 03/04/2021 00:10

Not when they're things I can't do easily at home.

Deep fried battered cod and chips, for example. Or proper Japanese or Korean food.

jessstan2 · 03/04/2021 00:10

No, I love it if I'm in the mood.

SisterAgatha · 03/04/2021 00:12

Depends what it is. Can I cook it at home and make it just as nice? Pizza yes - so I consider that a waste of money. Same as I don’t ever order pasta in a restaurant because it’s so cheap to make, it feels like a con.

But all other types of takeaway that I can’t cook myself (or can but not as well) then no. That’s a lovely treat and defo not a waste!

LostInABlizzard · 03/04/2021 00:14

Having just spent £40 on a very mediocre Chinese takeaway for two, yes! That's basically 1/3rd of a normal weekly shopping budget.
I very rarely order takeaway (when I am too exhausted to cook). I keep telling myself that it should also mean I am too exhausted to eat and I should go to bed instead of ordering rubbish that inevitably is not very nice!
The only treat is not having to make the effort. The food is always disappointing.

LostInABlizzard · 03/04/2021 00:16

Oh yes, fish and chips is the exception. But I did once have home-cooked fish and chips (not made by me) and it was divine! Made the entire house smell for a week, though.

RachelsHoliday21 · 03/04/2021 00:16

Yes, a waste of money but nice for a treat occasionally.

Looking forward to going to a restaurant when they reopen and getting waited on though. That will be well worth it.

notacooldad · 03/04/2021 00:17

Christmas in a bike, i would expect paying £40 to feed 7!!

Mamanyt · 03/04/2021 00:20

It would depend on the individual's financial state, I think. For me, with my absurdly small budget, take-away is a rare treat. However, for people with good, solid incomes...why not? Now, I don't suggest feeding a family take-away on a daily basis...unless you have very good restaurants in the area that offer full meals, not just pizza or burger and fries types of meal.

Gwenhwyfar · 03/04/2021 00:20

Yes, waste of money. If I don't want to cook I get a ready meal or a pizza from the shop.
I don't consider going to a restaurant to be a waste of money because then I'm paying for the experience.

LemonSwan · 03/04/2021 00:20

Its more of a convenience thing is it not?

People say time is money. I say money is time.

SisterAgatha · 03/04/2021 00:20

We had a curry last night for 2 that came to £33. It must be a location thing.

Cokecake · 03/04/2021 00:23

Usually wouldn’t order many takeaways. But because of Covid I have discovered deliveroo, Uber eats etc. At least once a week I order something.
