I personally don’t but I know many do

Nope, life is for living. Sure, it's cheaper to cook at home but something different can be nice and we don't have to be perfect 24/7...after all, if takeaways are a waste of money then surely MN is a waste of time.

MasterBeth · 03/04/2021 17:09

@BonnyandPoppy

Our chicken and cashew nuts main is £4.80 and I thought that was expensive Shock. Egg fried Rice is £2.30 and vegetable chow mein is £4.20!

I love takeaways. We have it once a week on a Saturday.

MasterBeth · 03/04/2021 17:12

@ChocolateHoneycomb

It's a treat. we only have one perhaps every couple of months.

last two have cost £20-30 for 4 of us, with usually enough or almost enough for 2nd meal leftover. I do tend to consider what is better value and two of us are veggie so we order very little meat.

We don't tend to bother as it is a waste of money imo. May buy one from supermarket that you cook. Very rarely fish and chips

Don't like all the packaging either

Nursingdreams83 · 03/04/2021 17:12

My DH would have a take away every night, I occasionally have one if its a special occasion but very rarely. He only really likes pizza or fried chicken and chips where as I'd want Chinese or Indian so not ever really worth doing it for 1 person. Also the kids don't like pizza or takeaway in general apart from McDonald's so I have to cook anyway.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/04/2021 17:23

Since we got a load of cook books / spices from The Spicery, we can make Indian / Thai / world curries as good as takeaway, so don't get those anymore.

We also make our own pizzas which are way nicer than takeaway (though totally different).

I always find Chinese disappointing, so we don't really get that anyway.

We sometimes have something from the local chippy, or maybe a pizza as the kids do love Papa John's every now and then!

I'm not averse to takeaway, but I'm not that interested in it that often.

lynsey91 · 03/04/2021 18:01

@SleepOhHowIMissYou

Depends.

I can't cook Indian, Thai or Chinese food as nicely as a restaurant so it's a real treat to have it. Supermarket versions don't come near to the taste, quality and freshness.

I can buy ready made pizzas from the supermarket too but they are not as nice as the ones on Pizza Hut's £5 menu or Domino's £5.99 deal.

If I am going to be eating a lot of calories then I want the meal to be worthwhile.

As the Pizza Hut example shows, takeaways aren't always expensive.

I think some supermarket pizzas are nice. Asda and Sainsburys I like - do only have veggie ones though.

Pizza Hut is ok but they tend to be very greasy. I absolutely hate Dominos pizza. It always looks so horrible and really does not taste very nice. I never get the Dominos love on here.

Me and DH don't eat fish so wouldn't really get anything from a chip shop. Also I hate chip shop chips as they are never crisp. Much prefer to make our own.

ekidmxcl · 03/04/2021 18:05

I think takeaways are preferable to fast fashion, party bag style tat toys etc. Don't see the problem if you can afford it and enjoy it.

fireplaceburning · 03/04/2021 19:02

@MasterBeth interesting as I read that as in wow you really have it cheap, I'd love that rather than a dig 🤷🏼‍♀️. The ones you've quoted have just said what they pay don't they 🤔

Lemmeout · 03/04/2021 19:05

Order online and collect usually cheaper.
I see it as not just food, no cooking and less washing up.

rookiemere · 03/04/2021 19:24

I had to laugh when my cousin - who is usually of the cook everything herself and my homemade food is so much nicer than anything you'd get in a restaurant- reported that her and her DH had taken to getting an Indian takeaway every weekend.

It's the lack of all other excitement and variety that does it, plus the sheer joy of someone else buying the ingredients and cooking the meal.

She's also started drinking more too - she rarely drunk pre-pandemic Grin. Be interesting to see what happens when life gets a bit more back to normal again.

@ginghamstarfish

Takeaway food is something we'd eat only in an emergency situation or if away from home and there was no alternative /no supermarkets .... if we couldn't be bothered to cook or didn't have time, a sandwich or toast/eggs/tinned soup etc would always be preferable. An exception is fish and chips, at the seaside, maybe once a year!
Hmm "family- would you like tinned soup for tea on Saturday or shall we get a takeaway"?
Parker231 · 04/04/2021 18:39

Just had a Mexican meal delivered from a local restaurant. Gorgeous. During lockdown we’ve been working our way around the world in different nationalities food.

You'd honestly think a tin of soup is more filling, enjoyable and gratifying than a takeaway unless it was an emergency? Confused
notdaddycool · 04/04/2021 20:43

I do, about 5 minutes after I’ve finished one.

Hankunamatata · 04/04/2021 20:46

Love takeaway but we only get it if we have the money and usually theres an offer so it not too pricey

AbsolutelyPansy · 05/04/2021 08:59

we had one on saturday night, and tbh it was not all that, and it was very expensive, ok it was nice, but not hot enough

we can all cook fabulous meals

HugeAckmansWife · 05/04/2021 09:07

Hardly ever get them. I always feel grim afterwards and it costs so much more than normal food. The exception is a couple if really nice restaurants that have started doing delivery this year and it's their usual quality restaurant food. Had that twice I think but otherwise no. My kids don't like Thai / Chinese / Indian. McDS is one a month on a regular road trip.

Parker231 · 05/04/2021 09:14

If you are not liking the takeaways you’ve had, I recommend checking with local restaurants that you already know and like. Many have moved over to takeaways and collections whilst they can’t open normally.

We’re continuing to have great takeaways as we are ordering from restaurants we regularly visit in pre Covid times. Last nights Mexican takeaways was lovely - no way could I make something that good.

EvilPea · 05/04/2021 09:22

If I really fancy something and enjoy it, no it’s not a waste.
If I just can’t be bothered to think and cook and dont really fancy something specific it’s a waste Easter Grin

Pigtailsandall · 05/04/2021 09:26

We get food deliveries maybe once or twice a week. I hate cooking, husband loves it, but we both have busy jobs and often short evenings once the toddler is asleep so cooking something nice from scratch is not always a pleasure.

We're lucky though, we have lots of excellent food close by. And we're both foodies so I definitely don't see it as a waste if money.

AnnaSW1 · 05/04/2021 09:33

Not at all!

somuchlaundrytowash · 05/04/2021 09:37

Yes I do think it's a waste of money so I don't buy takeaways.

AbsolutelyPansy · 05/04/2021 09:46

actually an indian take away i would not consider a waste of money
