To think that holidays are non essential?

The amount of whinging about missing out on holidays here and elsewhere has been shockingly irritating. Will missing out on a couple of trips to Megaluf/bland med cruises REALLY be the end of the world? It's such a shocking tone-deaf and privileged way to live your life.

Will staying at home and talking to your DC/learning a language/read a few books really be the end of the world? It's pretty grim absolutely NEED trips abroad or the seaside to to distract yourself from your own life.

I agree when it's just holidays for the sake of 'getting a break'. But in a world where so many people live in different countries from family members, it may mean long periods of separation from close relatives.

I entirely realize that it's very necessary to have travel restrictions for a while to prevent the import and export of virus mutations. But I don't think we should minimize the hardship for many families.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 02/04/2021 15:17

Time off work or school is essential. That includes not answering or reading emails at all hours. Or being available in case of 'emergencies' when you are on holiday, because your employer does not plan for cover or you do not do basic handovers.

Time spent being an embarrassment to this country by loud behaviour and making no attempt even to speak a few words of the local language in Spain, Greece or anywhere else is not essential.

Brainfogisreal · 02/04/2021 15:18

Speak for yourself OP. Some of us have worked like dogs through this bloody pandemic, me included and I'll be on the first flight out of here. You can stay at home and learn a language you'll never use since you won't be going abroad, if that's what makes you happy.

ConstanceGracy · 02/04/2021 15:21

What a crappy thread .
Who are you to say what’s essential or not ?
They may not be essential in the grand scheme of things but belittling people for missing holidays by saying they only go to magaluf or a “bland” cruise is bitchy and judgemental.
I’ve never done a cruise or been to magaluf but I wouldn’t judge anyone else for enjoying them.
Holidays bring some of the greatest memories for many families .
Go and be bitter somewhere else .

LolaSmiles · 02/04/2021 15:23

It's obviouy not essential to have overseas holidays, but they are nice to have.

There's lots of things in life that aren't essential, but make life nice.

I'm disappointed we won't be having one this year, but then we took a bit more of a realistic approach to the easing of restrictions so haven't spent the last few months pining for sun, sea and sand. There's plenty of things we enjoy doing that we can do in the UK, and we're going to see more of our family this year.

AliceMadHatter · 02/04/2021 15:23

A week away with family to me is spending time together away from normal life. I want to enjoy our Son coming away with us as he will reach an age when he doesn't want to. I can't wait for our next holiday.

teenagetantrums · 02/04/2021 15:24

Not essential...l live by the sea have a beach all year round... however I'm so bored of being here...so yes a holiday to get away essential for me after working all through this pandemic.. l have given up on booking abroad this year but we have a week booked in June in a different county can't wait

ConnieCaterpillar70 · 02/04/2021 15:25

We live in the South West of England. One of the greatest joys of lockdown was not seeing the endless jet trails across the sky.

Cheap global travel is such a senseless waste of money and cause of environmental damage.

QuiteContraryMarie · 02/04/2021 15:26

I consider holidays essential, yes.

Babygotblueyes · 02/04/2021 15:27

Absolutely. it is like the people who went overseas then whined when one of the lockdowns was announced. No one needs to go on holiday. It is just ridiculous.

GeorgiaMelissa · 02/04/2021 15:32

Of course they're not essential. The only essential things are the one you mentioned. Can't imagine why people want to go anywhere instead of staying at home all the time watching netflix and ordering takeaway. Mind-blowing.

GeorgiaMelissa · 02/04/2021 15:33

Btw, what's the point of learning another language if you can't use it?

Tal45 · 02/04/2021 15:38

Chocolate isn't essential to life either, or a take away, or a mobile phone or a television or the internet or even a comfortable bed with pillows and a mattress. Hope you don't do/have any of them OP you joyless, tone deaf over privileged person you.

Cactus1982 · 02/04/2021 15:38

I agree in principle OP, however the other day I drove to a well known tourist town that’s about 12 miles away from where I live. There was obviously nowhere open to go when we got there but the difference to my mental health just from being somewhere different and seeing different scenery was really noticeable. So whilst I agree holidaying abroad isn’t essential at the moment, having a change of seen, even if only for a few hours can make a big difference to how you feel.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 02/04/2021 15:38

@GeorgiaMelissa whilst I cannot go at present to the countries where the other languages I speak are the local language, I can still enjoy their cinema, their tv that I can receive, and even read their books.

PricklesAndSpikes · 02/04/2021 15:41

Cheap global travel is such a senseless waste of money

Why? I don't think that taking my daughter travelling, expanding our minds and learning about other cultures is a waste of money, quite the opposite in fact. I honestly think that if more people travelled and learnt about other cultures and ways of living first hand, the world would be a far more tolerant and harmonious place.

Lipz · 02/04/2021 15:41

Megaluf... 😂😂😂😂 Where the fuck is that?

You must either have no holidays abroad or you go to shite places.

Holidays are wonderful, can be very educational too.

Sitting at home talking a foreign language to your kids while reading, sounds riveting, sure you may as well throw in a bit of knitting, and don't forget your horlicks....

ilovesooty · 02/04/2021 15:41

@SuperCaliFragalistic

Obviously it's not strictly essential but it's part of what makes life worth living for lots of people. I love a holiday but I'm happy not to go abroad every year and I do think forgoing your summer holiday for one year isn't a big problem.
Agree with your first sentence but for many it will be two years not one depending on their destination and insurance status.
ilovesooty · 02/04/2021 15:43

@Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow

The thing that the pandemic has done for me is to bring into sharp relief the very very essential need to tell many many people to fuck right off. Obviously to do so would be a direct attack and so against mumsnet rules, do i shan't.

But i want to.

So do I.
ilovesooty · 02/04/2021 15:44

@CuthbertDibbleandGrubb

Not all of us behave like that abroad you know.
Quit4me · 02/04/2021 15:46

Nothing is essential to humans except for food, water, shelter and oxygen.
Family isn’t essential. Friends arnt essential, having more than one set of clothes and shoes isn’t essential, having furniture, a bed, or windows in your house isn’t essential.
Lots of things are there to make our lives on this earth more enjoyable.
What a bleak outlook you have.

GeorgiaMelissa · 02/04/2021 15:46

There's a difference between well-travelled people and people like OP. The latter cannot imagine that people are different and want different things, because they are surrounded by people that look like them, speak like them and think like them. You could use a bit of foreign holiday @Silliantro, it might broaden your horizons. Wink

KarensChoppyBob · 02/04/2021 15:47

Exactly. Lots of presumptions happening here.

Bof.

Fairyliz · 02/04/2021 15:48

Well nine pages in and the ops not come back to the thread.

Do you think she might have gone on holiday Grin?

rosie1959 · 02/04/2021 15:49

Sorry OP holidays for us are totally essential We have our own company with the office attached to the house if we don’t go away my DH doesn’t stop working
We don’t go abroad anyway but intend to get in as many holidays and breaks as possible
