I think it would be interesting especially in debated topics, I see this on newspaper comments section and it's interesting as you see what the majority thinks of comments.

Oh God, please never. People should stand by their words and stop expecting feedback from strangers. If they give it by replying to comments, great. Hopefully MN never goes down that unnecessary and damaging social media route of 'like/thumbs up or down' validation and affirmation dependence.

Seeing "what the majority thinks" is just another way to encourage groupthink and clique-forming based on the instant visibility of "what the majority thinks". We already have post pile-ons, we don't want to add passive aggressive group pile-ons via likes or thumbs up/down.

I’ve thought this so many times. Would be great.

Absolutely OP. So many times I agree with what has been said (and also disagree) but don’t want to necessary get involved in the conversation.

Noooooooooooooo! Shock

I would hate that. I have seen forums that have this type of thing before, and it creates cliques and divisions and hostilities. It creates too much opportunity for bullying and ganging-up. I have see it happen on other forums.

And if 2 posters are having an argument, and one poster gets 25 'thumbs up' for every post and only 4 or 5 thumbs-down,' and the other one only gets 3 or 4 thumbs-up, and 25 thumbs-down, the poster with the fewer 'thumbs-ups' will feel low and dejected, and like most people dislike them.

And the one who gets the most thumbs-ups, feels smug and self satisfied, and acts like they won the argument ... even if they didn't.

Whilst it definitely has its place I think it would deter people from having conversation if they just had the opportunity to like or unlike.

We’ve already got the vote option on AIBU. I think that’s enough.

Hate that idea. It's a thumbs down from me.

If people feel especially strongly about what has been said, then they can take the time to type it.

AIBU can already be quite intense, adding the option to approve/disapprove of comments in real time would surely be a red rag to a bull Grin

That’s a properly shit idea.

Yes definitely, so many times I’ve wanted to acknowledge an excellent post. I think some posts definitely should be recognised as being super helpful/funny etc.

Report

Fembot123 · 01/04/2021 19:53

Can’t you just quote a post and say you think it’s excellent?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 01/04/2021 19:57

Hell no, Whenthebellsring has summed it up. I can't imagine how much worse this site would be if fan-girling and/or ganging-up against somebody, had a little button to play with.

Yikes! MNHQ, please never do this.

NO. Use words it's MN Talk not MN Like/Dislike.

Why do we need to see what people think of every comment?

Report

HeddaGarbled · 01/04/2021 20:08

Absolutely not. It reduces thoughtful discussion (sometimes) to a crowd-pleasing popularity contest. And we know where that leads (Donald Trump, Piers Morgan etc).

Plus it adds to the bullying of those who don’t subscribe to the majority opinion.

This! So many times I just want to agree with a post and not read loads of posts duplicating the same sentiment.
