AIBU to think children are now in charge

The school kids protesting in London, how things have changed when we were children we done what we were told, now the kids are laying down the law and dictating to adults.

We already know children know they are above the law and untouchable, we had Greta Thunburg blame the older generation for all the faults of planet earth.

AIBU to think that children are being disrespectful and have no idea how the real world works? These are the same children who would be in floods of tears screaming if you changed the WiFi password to their gadgets, WiFi that us adults work to pay for!!

I hate the flag thing, jingoistic narcissism, I agree with many of the issues being challenged and protested against. But not all of them. I keep quiet on the issues I don't embrace fully but commend and appreciate the young who are fighting to change some damaging entrenched beliefs.
It's progress, whether you like it or not. I personally am with JKR on the trans debate, my woke, intelligent children are not, but individual examples aside, I would be rather dismayed if the young stopped campaigning for change, lost their energy and zest and embraced all the values of their parents' generation. That would be inertia and is much more sinister and chilling.

daisiesinmay · 01/04/2021 08:38

The world might be a better place if children were in charge imo. They tend to be less bigoted and kinder. Greta is right, and so were the school children protesting against racism.

Itsmeagainandagain · 01/04/2021 08:38

I don't feel confident in teenagers who have contributed absolutely zero, but demand the world fits around them. I don't feel confident in anyone that is hypocritical, I want climate change but I travel around on airplanes to tell the world about climate change and its all their fault, by greta thunburg? Are you all for serious. adults being told By children not to do things they happily and without care do so themselves.

DropBearThere · 01/04/2021 08:39

What exactly are the faults of planet earth? This is one of those lowest common denominator posts, go back to daytime tv OP.

In a way YANBU OP

The politicization in schools at that age is very worrying. They are weaponizing children.

I've never understood the Greta phenomenon either.

Laggartha · 01/04/2021 08:41

Why are you so angry about this? You say you remember when "children did as they were told". What happened to you when you were little and didn't do as you were told?

TheGumption · 01/04/2021 08:41

I'd go back to the DM comments section if I were you OP. You'll find like-minded folks there.

echt · 01/04/2021 08:41

I don't have confidence in those who use woke brigade instead of an argument.

That would be you, OP. The one who still hasn't been able to explain what they mean be respect for elders.

echt · 01/04/2021 08:42

By, not be.

tangerinelollipop · 01/04/2021 08:42

Also how can anyone be in favour of repudiating the Union Flag!

Children are being used to push political agendas. Wake up!

Kinder? lol Videos nonstop on social media of kids being bullied and beaten and posted online to further the humiliation. Kids taunting suicide victims on social media. Or has Amanda Todd been forgotten, to this day still tormented online. Kinder is not the word I associate with teenagers. Another day another gang related knife victim.

You realise Greta Thunberg literally spent weeks on a solar powered boat shi*ing in a bucket as she refused to fly, right?

Yes yes, much better that children are politically apathetic like many of the sheep-like adults in this country.
Twoblueblocks · 01/04/2021 08:44

From what age and on what issues is anyone allowed to protest then? Should all children be subservient little robots to everything you say?

Greta doesn't fly, I'm not a fan but there is nothing wrong with what she does. Having idealism and hope for change is what being a youth is all about. If your children are disrespectful and screaming about wifi password you should take parenting advice, not put down an entire generation of the future.

dontdisturbmenow · 01/04/2021 08:44

I'm with you OP. The lack of respect for authority is not helping anyone.

I do believe that children should be given a voice, be heard and allowed to challenge, but this has turned into expecting to be listened when they shout, to be approved no matter what and allowed to defy rather challenge.

Parents are exhausted because of it, teachers too and many of these kids end up struggling being managed at work because as a result.

cheesebubble · 01/04/2021 08:44

@UhtredRagnarson

They brought me up to respect my elders though

Didn’t they bring you up to respect everyone? Including yourself? Mine did.

It sounds as though your parents didn't respect your values and opinions, sorry to say but why would age entitle you to respect? I respect my 2 year old, I respect any person at any age and so should you! Just because you're older doesn't make you right?

What has any of this to do with younger people protesting against what they disagree with?

cheesebubble · 01/04/2021 08:45

@UhtredRagnarson that's aimed at OP btw.

tangerinelollipop · 01/04/2021 08:46

Greta doesn't fly

Do you believe those behind her 'phenomenon' don't fly either? How ridiculously naïve!

Alsohuman · 01/04/2021 08:46

Took the words out of my mouth. Jesus, this thread’s fucking depressing.
Bluebells32 · 01/04/2021 08:46

Yes adult power over children has shifted. It's better that adults don't have the kind of authority that allowed them to hit, shout, abuse without any comeback. Some argue it's gone too far the other way. Teaching unions, for example, released figures which showed a high number of staff had experienced violence from pupils in schools.

The climate change movement and protests are important. Rightly or wrongly, Greta has been chosen as the young face for this. It's important that everyone is aware of the kinds of problems we could be facing soon if we don't take action. These protests are putting pressure on world leaders to make changes.

I agree, but her arrogant attitude about her views, her expectation to be listened and acquiesced by all, and her position of self-impoetance is not great. Saying that, there are always been Greta like kids. They rarely become a figure of respect in adulthood.
