AIBU to think children are now in charge

The school kids protesting in London, how things have changed when we were children we done what we were told, now the kids are laying down the law and dictating to adults.

We already know children know they are above the law and untouchable, we had Greta Thunburg blame the older generation for all the faults of planet earth.

AIBU to think that children are being disrespectful and have no idea how the real world works? These are the same children who would be in floods of tears screaming if you changed the WiFi password to their gadgets, WiFi that us adults work to pay for!!

Children have missed a year of education, a year of sports and activities, a year of being able to see their peers. Children are not in charge. Children are treated appallingly.

@BerylReader just hoping that we get rid of our toddler the way the US did!

I think you are disrespectful for not even learning to spell Greta Thunberg's name properly before you complain about her.

FourOnTheHill · 01/04/2021 08:15

YABU. Just because our generation put up with sexually abusive behaviour and destroyed the planet I don’t think that means anyone else should.

Itsmeagainandagain · 01/04/2021 08:16

@CandyLeBonBon

Ok boomer (as my kids would say!)

I'm only here for the deletion message!

That's what your life summed up to, reporting. Poor you

I bloody loved seeing the kids protest at the Pimlico school on the news last night, and hearing them interviewed. Good on them.

I thought this was going to be about parents of "spirited" children running riot in restaurants and not respecting other peoples property etc and came on to agree, absolutely can't stand that.

But a cohort of almost young adults, protesting about whats important to them and explaining eloquently to the interviewer why they're upset, with some of those issues being related to race? Fucking excellent. When I think back to when I was that age in the 80s we were terrified of our teachers and would never have been that brave, we'd have been scared of getting the cane. Not a great environment for young minds to thrive and question the world around them.

And I love Greta. Say about her and her parents/motives what you will, she has brought environmental issues to the fore for the young like never before- and its their planet that's being destroyed.

Actually that was my phone that corrected the spelling, I did spell it your way but autocorrect, can't help that.

I love the criticism of Boomers, particularly by those who are desperately trying to ensure they inherit the over priced houses of their parents.

pointythings · 01/04/2021 08:18

I'm completely on the Pimlico students' side. School uniform is a nonsense in any case, but schools like Pimlico take it to an extreme with discriminatory hair rules that have a disproportionate impact on black students. As for the flags - yes, flag shagging is back in fashion. I'm old enough to have learned where that got us last time round. Pathetic willy-waving nationalism should be opposed.

But keep digging, OP.

Graciebobcat · 01/04/2021 08:19

It often feels like Boris and other government ministers are children, but in fact they are actually adults in their 40s and 50s.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 01/04/2021 08:19

Jeez, OP. Are you for real?

How can you possibly take offence at a 16 year girl who is trying to get world leaders to act on climate change??

Smallfry1 · 01/04/2021 08:20

OP are you Priti Patel?

thecatsthecats · 01/04/2021 08:20

I don't really agree with the way you've framed it, but I have noticed a trend in young voices/progressive stances being treated with more weight. This is a mixed blessing.

The reason, it seems, is the increase of social media and the rise of people selling themselves as content to push products. In the olden days, a brand or person sold themselves through a careful and polished PR representation, none of which was "real".

Nowadays brands and influencers have a very direct relationship with the public. There's still PR in there, but it's a lot more blurred. And if you don't want to fall out with Twitter, you tend to have to follow certain "woke" party lines. (Jeremy Corbyn gained a lot through this but lost it also).

Forget BLM and the environment - let's put the MN favourite trans rights into the frame. You can't just sell lipstick or t shirts or hairspray any more - you have to use influencers from the approved mindset. Your private opinions can catastrophically affect your ability to do your job.

I don't think that it's a bad thing that young people have voices, but the places in which their voices are amplified is contributing to a very toxic media dynamic, and is part of the picture of the narrowing ability to discuss contrary views.

If you are referring to me, I grew up with fuck all, my parents haven't a pot to piss in. They brought me up to respect my elders though. Funny how that works, the less you grew up with the more you appriaciate what you have. Try telling that to children.

@Itsmeagainandagain you do know autocorrect isn't the boss of you, right? You are allowed to change it back!

meditrina · 01/04/2021 08:22

OP is clearly ignorant of the history of children's protests, if she really thinks it's a new phenomenon

And is unaware of Article 15 of UNCRC

And what do you mean by that?

TheGumption · 01/04/2021 08:22

Oh okay, so because FGM exists we shouldn't be concerned with any other female issues. And black people need to suck it up if their afro hair doesn't fit the uniform policy. Got it.
Women and ethnic minorities, its time to get back in your boxes.
Would you like to add any more '-ists' to your list OP? You've ticked off sexist and racist so far.

While travelling the world imprinting her carbon foot print, she should practice what she preaches!

autumnboys · 01/04/2021 08:23

So, OP, what would you propose as the minimum age for protesting?
