AIBU to think children are now in charge

The school kids protesting in London, how things have changed when we were children we done what we were told, now the kids are laying down the law and dictating to adults.

We already know children know they are above the law and untouchable, we had Greta Thunburg blame the older generation for all the faults of planet earth.

AIBU to think that children are being disrespectful and have no idea how the real world works? These are the same children who would be in floods of tears screaming if you changed the WiFi password to their gadgets, WiFi that us adults work to pay for!!

Greta has been chosen as the young face for this

Who chose her? I would like to know

Itsmeagainandagain · 01/04/2021 08:48

things that are important right now, bullying in schools
Increasing and worrying knife culture
Grooming gangs targeting children
Child trafficking
The rise in child suicides
County line drug smuggling

Not important at the moment.. Hairstyles, headscarves, flags, gender

But those are easy targets to protest about.. God forbid going against your peers

I don't feel confident in teenagers who have contributed absolutely zero, but demand the world fits around them.

OK, so at what point are young people allowed to protest? How much do you think they need to have paid in taxes before they get their protest permit? And do SAHMs also not have the right to protest, since they don't work and contribute? Hmm

Your comment to the poster re 'the voices in their head' is downright disgusting and I am going to report it.

lollipop no-one is repudiating the Union flag, people just don't want it weaponised by the current government, who seem to think that if they plaster it all over everything, people won't see how badly they have fucked up. In this, the government is probably correct.

Graciebobcat · 01/04/2021 08:48

The most disturbing thing would be if young people behaved like Daily Mail reading boomers. Why oh why can't they just come out of the womb sounding like fully formed 65 year old curmudgeons?

CoffeeandCakeEqualsLove · 01/04/2021 08:49

What about the protests in the 60s/70s, mainly led by teens/young people? Absolutely pathetic. How dare they fight for civil rights, the women's rights, gay rights. Bloody kids, am I right? Or those pesky women in the 20s protesting for their right to vote. What a nuisance. Didn't anyone tell them to shut up and listen to the grown ups.

🙄

TheGumption · 01/04/2021 08:50

So youths are bad when they're bullying online and knifing each other and also bad when they're protesting to make things better. They can't win in your world then, can they?

Maudythebudgie · 01/04/2021 08:50

Your ignorance is staggering op. You know less than the teenagers you are bitching about Shock

GintyMcGinty · 01/04/2021 08:50

I took part in a high school school protest in 1988.

I also got up a petition to persuade the school to allow girls to play football in PE instead of being required to do dancing. That would have been late 80s too.

Young people being opinionated is nothing new.

And it's a good thing.

Some of these you may need to google but these are young people who took a stand and you should they are amazing.

Good for these kids I say. Why should they stay quiet in the face of racism.

Those who don’t like it - maybe take a step a back and ask yourself what exactly is your issue?

Iggly · 01/04/2021 08:52

@dontdisturbmenow

Greta doesn't fly, I'm not a fan but there is nothing wrong with what she does. Having idealism and hope for change is what being a youth is all about I agree, but her arrogant attitude about her views, her expectation to be listened and acquiesced by all, and her position of self-impoetance is not great. Saying that, there are always been Greta like kids. They rarely become a figure of respect in adulthood.
What a nasty way to describe Greta.
Schoolisback1973 · 01/04/2021 08:52

'Videos nonstop on social media of kids being bullied and beaten and posted online to further the humiliation. Kids taunting suicide victims on social media. Or has Amanda Todd been forgotten, to this day still tormented online. Kinder is not the word I associate with teenagers. Another day another gang related knife victim.'
What you describe here, happened during my childhood. Just didn't have social media to see it!

I thought the thing that’s been brought out into the open this week is sexual harassment in schools which appears to be endemic. Anyone who thinks revealing and protesting about that needs their bumps felt.

So we’ve now moved from children being seen and not heard to allowing protest but it must be about the “right” causes. Make up your mind.

GalesThisMorning · 01/04/2021 08:54

Who are you to tell teenagers what they ought to be concerned about? You protest against child trafficking, no one is stopping you and it's a valid concern. Other people will take up causes that matter to them.

Ignorant comment OP. It's your mentality that needs to change, not the kids. The kids are alright

tangerinelollipop · 01/04/2021 08:54

In September 2020 students took down and burned a union flag that had been erected outside their school

Are people in favour of this violence? Social Services should be called on these 'kids' parents who allow this debacle to take place

lynsey91 · 01/04/2021 08:55

@Sirzy

Surely it’s being disrespectful to assume that due to their age they can’t understand issues in the world?

Given the images we have seen in the past few days of atrocious littering I think the more young people stand up for things like environmental issues the better

A lot of the littering is young people. Maybe not school children although I have seen plenty of school children throwing rubbish on the floor. Until recently I lived very close to school and would see children coming out of the shop with sweets, crisps etc and throw the wrapping on the pavement outside the shop even though there was a bin directly outside the shop!

Look at music festivals. Again where I used to live held a huge music festival in the local (big) park. The rubbish left behind was disgusting - tents, chairs, tables, barbeques, air beds, sleeping bags, food, unopened cans of drink, clothes. All just left exactly where they had been used.

One year I found a pair of Timberland boots in my size that looked almost brand new! Still have them.

Youngsters pretend to be concerned about climate change, pollution etc but most of them could not care less

Flag burning = violence? I'm never going to take anything you say on MN seriously again. BiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuit

But the hairstyle, headscarves, flags is racism. Are you saying they should put up with institutionalised racism?

This is something they feel they can make a difference about and if I was a parent at that school I’d be proud.

I’m not sure what you expect the average school kid to do about county lines drug smuggling, child trafficking, etc. But who knows maybe they will start small, feel empowered and move on to bigger things.

In the mean time as an adult you can feel free to start protesting about these topics which you obviously feel so strongly about. Please let me know when I can join your protest. Good luck.

Graciebobcat · 01/04/2021 08:56

Why the hell are schools flying flags outside? It's not the US, thank fuck. I'm 45 and I'd be climbing the flagpole and ripping it down myself.

tangerinelollipop · 01/04/2021 08:57

flags is racism

How is a flag racist? Please explain, I'm curious

You've completely outed yourself with your latest post! Interesting to see where you're going now.. What are you doing yourself to fight any of this? You're just a bigot and you can't stand seeing kids fighting bigotry.
twelly · 01/04/2021 08:58

I don't have a problem with children and young people complaining and protesting within the law - the issue now is that some of the actions are not in-keeping with the law, given covid the actions at the school in London should not have happened. However, my main concern is that there is a trend to act on the children's complaints immediately without giving others time to present other views.

Give your head a wobble, why don't you?

Lessthanaballpark · 01/04/2021 08:58

Who are you to decide what they protest about?

Protest is a human right in the West, that our government are trying to take away.
