To think natural deodorants don't work?

Has anyone had a good experience with natural deodorants? Being a bit of a hippy I finally succumbed to the advertising and switched to a natural brand. Feel a bit damp and a bit smelly a lot of the time for the first month. Nothing dramatic but I can't wear the same top two days in a row now if it's a tight one, it has to be washed. As it was quite a cheap brand I signed up to the Wild eco friendly deodorants that send you the refills in the post. Hasn't arrived yet. Had high hopes for it until I received an email from them thanking me for my order and saying a lot of people find they sweat more when switching to their product but not to worry as your body adjusts eventually. They also used the word "detoxing" several times which is usually a buying red flag for me.

Has anyone found there's a period of stinkiness and then everything's fine or do they simply not work?

no idea - but as you note, use of the word 'detox' is a red flag for bullshitters. And if the product doesn't work either...

I had a look on their site. The stuff is deodorant not antiperspirant, so you will sweat as much as you would without it, just smell better. They also use perfume which is totally unnecessary and further destroys their eco-credentials.

and bloody hell - HOW much???

I bought a big starter set of Wild and didn’t get on with it. Won’t be renewing.

My pits just felt continually damp, sticky and itchy. I’m back to trusty Mitchum anti perspirant.

I did use a solid deodorant from lush for a while but it had that initial damp sticky feeling, but I think it did seem to dry after a while, although was horrendous for white marks on clothing.

Potterythrowdown · 31/03/2021 17:24

I use an Earth Conscious one in the winter but have to go back to good old Sure in the summer/warmer days when I'm sweaty.

linerforlife · 31/03/2021 17:24

I switched too and it was awful. I smelt so bad by the afternoon and felt damp all the time, plus I had to wash my clothes and bra on a longer wash to get the smell out properly. I am back to Mitchum too!!

I use pit rock which works as I’m a smelly person. I used loads of eco ones that didn’t work till I found that.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 31/03/2021 17:26

I use Trust which you can buy in boots. It’s zinc oxide so it kills the bacteria. I find it lasts about a week!

PissTestRightNowDaniella · 31/03/2021 17:27

I bought a jar of Fit Pit in desperation and was very pleasantly surprised by how well it worked.

Also Weleda and Pitrok roll on. Mind you we haven't hit summer yet which will be their sternest test.

capercaillie · 31/03/2021 17:28

Earth conscious is brilliant - I went from not being able to wear tops more than once in a row to wearing several times. Works all year round for me!

Moonstone1234 · 31/03/2021 17:29

I tried a natural one too. Complete load of rubbish

DoubleTweenQueen · 31/03/2021 17:42

I use Green People and find it very effective after my body and pit flora adjusted to it + has probiotics to encourage this. Have recently bought the teenage one for teen with BO, and we've both noticed a big difference. Think the sanex she was using made it worseFor us, it's worth continuing with the brand..

PenOrPencil · 31/03/2021 17:45

Nope. Tried natural ones and went back to my usual antiperspirant.

LaceyBetty · 31/03/2021 17:45

Tried and failed for me.

HappyWipings · 31/03/2021 17:45

I tried wild. It didn't work as well as my usual brand and it left marks on my clothes. I sold my unopened refills on ebay and went back to Mitchum stick.

I actually swapped to natural deodorant about a week ago, discovered the spray stuff was making my son really uncomfortable sneezing etc. Encouraged my dh to switch too as we can’t have it sprayed in the house and we are both really pleasantly surprised. He was reluctant at first as he sweats so much and was worried he would smell etc but he said he sweats less and hasn’t smelt once! We are using salt of the earth

Hangingover · 31/03/2021 17:50

Maybe I should go back to this...I found the salt stick very good but they seem to smash hits easily.

No basically they’re all shit 🤣. I’ve tried most of them as I’ve never been able to use deodorant with aluminium in as I get scabby armpits (lovely I know).

The one I usually use as it’s aluminium free is bionsen which does work but it’s not a natural one really.

The only effective natural one I’ve found, thinking about it, is the weleda citrus one which comes in a glass bottle with a pump dispenser. Never got smelly with that one and it smells lovely, but it is about £8 so I don’t buy it that often!

TheWaif · 31/03/2021 17:54

I don't smell much at all but I use pitrok at the moment. I find it makes me smell a bit like a damp, unwashed bath towel by the end of the day.

1Morewineplease · 31/03/2021 17:54

Whilst going through the menopause, I tried everything.
The only thing that remotely helped was Mitchum. I don't like using it as it's a cocktail of awful chemicals... but I don't want to drip from my armpits or smell.

Returnoftheowl · 31/03/2021 17:54

I've tried salt of the East and the natural deodorant co... Never of them were very effective for me unfortunately. I've switched back to Dr Organic instead.

Returnoftheowl · 31/03/2021 17:55

Sorry, salt of the earth!

crazycanuck · 31/03/2021 17:56

I used to use a paste version that came in a jar, by Routine (disclaimer, I’m in Canada, I don’t know if you can get it in the UK). It’s quite pricey so I started making my own. I can make 6 jars for the price of 1 store bought, and it works really well. It is a deodorant and not an antiperspirant, so there is some wetness when it’s really hot or I’m nervous/been exercising. But no smell.

WeatherwaxLives · 31/03/2021 17:57

I've gone full lentil weaver in terms of deodorant Blush I make my own!

I couldn't justify the price of readymade natural ones. I wanted to be plastic free, rather than specifically 'natural'. I'm mixing coconut oil, arrowroot and essential oil.

It seems OK. I'm not doing anything strenuous, but I don't really sweat anyway, I just go red when I get hot. I've always washed tops after one wear anyway, so can't comment on that. But I don't feel smelly...

I'm using a mixed essential oil and it's quite 'herby' I can smell it when I get warm, which is quite nice.

againandagainoncemore · 31/03/2021 18:02

I used pit rock too. Seems crap. Also a very expensive one that smells great in the jar from 'the natural deodorant co' but nah.

I'm back to Superdrug cruelty free but full of chemical ones!

Geamhradh · 31/03/2021 18:06

They really don't work. As standing anywhere near someone in warm weather who uses them shows.
The one vaguely efficient one was a Lush lemongrass scented one. But realistically speaking, it was the strong perfume camouflaging the BO.
