To order a sofa I have not seen costing nearly £3k

I am tempted to order a sofa from sofa.com today as I can get £900 off if I order by midnight tonight. I have not seen the sofa as the showrooms are shut and I don’t have a sample of the fabric as it has not arrived yet in the post. If I leave it until the shops reopen, I may be able to see one in a showroom (not sure if they will actually have that model in my local showroom) but the price will have gone back up by £900. I am very limited in my choice of sofa as I have a very narrow entrance so I am going for a breakdownable sofa, this seems to add to the cost as well!

I wouldn't buy anything I hadn't sat on previously. I need to sit right back on a sofa to see if my feet touch the floor or I would get back ache having to lean forward😀 Also are the arm rests comfortable ?
I would be a bit wary of a 'buy it quick, before the price goes up' type of offer. If you want to go ahead then make sure there's a returns policy if it's not suitable for your needs.

SummerInSun · 29/03/2021 18:02

Pretty sure if you buy anything online you have a 14 day cooling off period. You could order it and then of you don't like it when the fabric sample arrives you can cancel the order. But check that!

DuesToTheDirt · 29/03/2021 18:08

I lay down on our sofa in the sofa shop. Grin Wouldn't buy one that I hadn't had a good loll about on. MIL's sofa is impossible for me to sit on comfortably, never mind lie down on - she is shorter than me and this makes a big difference.

FrancesSaid · 29/03/2021 18:13

If they can sell it with a £900 discount it really isn’t worth the “full” price. A lot of sofa companies have a perpetual “sale” but hike up the price once a year so that they can then tempt people to buy by offering a huge “discount”.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 29/03/2021 18:13

if they're the kind of company that's offering 30% of if you buy today is likely to be offering similar offers on a regular basis - £2k is a chunky amount to pay for something that's going to be a key piece of furniture in your home for the next few years.
Check it out in store - I'm sure that you'll have a commission hungry salesman biting your hands off with offers.

HamFisted · 29/03/2021 18:15

We did this and didn't regret it.

dudsville · 29/03/2021 18:16

I think the above posters are absolutely right. Also, the misty extensive purchase I've ever made on a sofa was online during a massive sale. I knew the brand well, it was normally out of my price range, I've been thrilled with them! But yes, it isn't a smart way to make a purchase on a sofa.

korawick12345 · 29/03/2021 18:16

Sofa.com generally make very good extremely comfortable sofa. I have bought multiple sofa from them over the last few years and all have been comfortable. I would be more concerned about not seeing the fabric sample. Though if it arrives in the next day or two you would probably be able to change the fabric.

Noodlewave · 29/03/2021 18:16

Buy it, I can't imagine a sofa store ever having another sale on Wink

korawick12345 · 29/03/2021 18:18

It's 20% off though so I can't see how you have got to 900 quid off

May17th · 29/03/2021 18:18

I wouldn’t be a sofa without sitting on it either. My friend did that due to lockdown and it looks nice. It’s not comfortable though.

steppemum · 29/03/2021 18:19

I could not spend that on a sofa I hadn't sat on.
But then I find most sofas uncomfortable.

Bloody love ours, but they are ancient and dying and I am just pretending it isn;'t going to happen

PinkiOcelot · 29/03/2021 18:19

I bought my sofa online and the shops weren’t shut then. No regrets here. Still happy with it. Guess I could have just been lucky though.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 29/03/2021 18:22

If a company can afford to offer you a £900 discount, I very much doubt the sofa is worth what they're charging!

ShowOfHands · 29/03/2021 18:26

I'm umming and aahing about spending £1k on a sofa I haven't had a loll upon.

I've never, ever bought a sofa, let alone spent that much on a piece of furniture. We've survived with hand me downs. It is beautiful though. I can't decide either op.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 29/03/2021 18:27

No way, unless my bum has actually sat on a sofa there's no way I'm being it.

Star21 · 29/03/2021 18:31

Korawick, it is £3.7k for the 2 sofas at full price so 20% off is just over £700, then free fabric protection is £180 so brings the price down to around £2.8k, total saving around £900.I have been looking at them since January but obviously haven’t been able to view them because of lockdown. I have a feeling if I don’t buy them today I will have to wait until the end of the summer to get the same deal maybe even January.

Unfortunately due to my narrow entrance I can’t just go into the local sofa store and buy a sofa, it has to be one that a company will assemble in the room, or a flat pack self assembly.

Love my Sofa.com sofa and found them a great company to deal with.

I was able to see the sofa in store, but not in my fabric. Unfortunately that seems to fairly normal these days

They do have lots off offers on. I missed the deadline for the first but there was another 6 weeks later.

Are you aware you have the facility to return within 14 days of delivery? I think you can have a full refund for a standard Sofa or Credit if it is modular.

That's a lot for a sofa.

I must be really tight - as even if I had loads of money I would not spend that much on a sofa. Ever. Grin

Ours was £400 and I thought that was a lot!

PattyPan · 29/03/2021 18:50

I think that’s a lot for a sofa regardless but definitely more than I would pay without even having had a fabric sample. These sorts of places have sales regularly so I’d just wait for the next one personally.

Tillytwilight · 29/03/2021 18:59

I’ve paid similar for a sofa. It’s lasted 18 years and is amazingly comfortable (I’ve had it recovered once and the seats cushions remade, but otherwise perfect).

I’d want to sit on a sofa before buying it. So many look uncomfortable just from the pictures. I quite liked a Loaf sofa online, but when I sat on it in store, it had no support and you almost needed to slouch to get comfy.

The online cooling off period is a good idea if you order and get cold feet.

1forAll74 · 29/03/2021 19:00

I would not purchase an expensive sofa, without trying it out first. I have recently been looking for a smallish armchair online, and didn't see one that would be suitable,so came across some on ebay, and saw a cheapish one on there, that would suffice. and it said in new condition etc, but not going to buy it,as I cant try it out,and I have the same problem, with a narrow doorway and access to my old house here. They did give measurements of the said chair, but feel it might not fit through the door without taking the door off !! and I am only talking about a £ 50 chair here !!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/03/2021 19:05

We just bought a beautiful velvet sofa from Loaf for £2600 unseen and untried, - I regret it. It’s too low. The velvet marks so easily although I expect other people would have been aware of that.
