To order a sofa I have not seen costing nearly £3k

I am tempted to order a sofa from sofa.com today as I can get £900 off if I order by midnight tonight. I have not seen the sofa as the showrooms are shut and I don’t have a sample of the fabric as it has not arrived yet in the post. If I leave it until the shops reopen, I may be able to see one in a showroom (not sure if they will actually have that model in my local showroom) but the price will have gone back up by £900. I am very limited in my choice of sofa as I have a very narrow entrance so I am going for a breakdownable sofa, this seems to add to the cost as well!

I've bought two sofas online, without seeing or sitting on them and I love them. I'd say go for it!

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 29/03/2021 19:09

I wouldn't buy one I hadn't sat on, but I'm a) short b) incredibly fussy!

I don't think you're unreasonable, but I do think you'd be mad to do it

They'll have another sale soon, you won't have to wait until January!

thebunnies · 29/03/2021 19:12

Well I just bought 2 sofas and a footstool yesterday from sofa.com without seeing them. I do have another sofa from there though so I trust them and I couldn’t resist the discount and free fabric protection!! Their brushed linen / cotton is really nice and sample colours, in my experience, are close to what you see in the screen.

alanpartridgefromtheoasthouse · 29/03/2021 19:23

Sofa.com do sales all the time, I definitely wouldn't feel rushed into it!

Which ones are you getting? I've got my eye on the Snowdrop at the moment but am waiting until we have moved.

Puppylucky · 29/03/2021 19:27

I've quite often bought sofas etc on line even before lockdown. I now know, after a couple of mistakes, that the important thing for me is less about the style /shape and more about the cushion stuffing. I find very firm seat cushions uncomfortable, so now steer clear of foam based cushions in favour of feather wrapped foam. I'm awaiting my latest sofa at the moment and having chosen it based on the above criteria I'm hopeful it will be comfy :-)

Alan,, I am thinking of the Izzy sofas in Pumice house basketweave or uniform house basketweave

I would not do this, not again anyway.

Purchased one online from just the photograph about eight years ago. It still looks like new but only because nobody can stand sitting on it as it tips you back so far that you can't get up, cuts your circulation off behind the knees and has a piece of wood going across just behind the cushions that digs in your lower spine.

I would not splash that much cash with testing it.

KerplunkingAway · 29/03/2021 19:55

Without testing it I mean.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 29/03/2021 19:57

You really need to sit on a sofa before you know if you are going to like it.

grumpyhetty · 29/03/2021 19:58

I love my sofa.com furniture- I ordered it online without trying them out. I think you have 14 days to return it if you are not happy. I didn’t like some cushions that I ordered at the same time and there was no problem returning them.

JaninaDuszejko · 29/03/2021 20:03

I have bought loads of furniture online, including an admittedly very cheap sofa from made.com. I think some people have more sensitive bums than other, I've never sat on a sofa and found it uncomfortable.

whetherpigshavewings · 29/03/2021 20:05

If 3k is nothing for you, and you can replace them in 6 months, go for it.

If it's a big purchase, I think you'd be mad to spend that much without seeing them, even if you carefully check dimensions. Can't you at least get sample fabric?
It still won't give you a clue on how comfy they are.

user64332 · 29/03/2021 20:10

I'm buying a 2k IKEA sofa soon that I've never seen in person and the picture isn't that great of the colour online. But I'm just going to go for it. Moving house in a couple of weeks and need a new one. Don't want to queue for hours at IKEA when they finally open and have to lug it home. If we really really hate it we can always take it back after it arrives. It ticks my boxes for versatility and washable and storage features etc so I'm just going to go for it. If it ticks your boxes op (fits in the house and you like the look of it!) Then go for it.

fruitpastille · 29/03/2021 20:13

I tried sofas in person but the one that actually arrived with our choice of fabric on it was not as comfortable as the one in the shop - it was much firmer. At least it was 'only' £700 though.

Spanglybangles · 29/03/2021 20:31

Wow that’s a tough one. I’m having enough difficulty deciding whether or not to order a £900 sofa from Made that I’ve never seen or sat on. It’s gorgeous but I’m being indecisive.😩

To order a sofa I have not seen costing nearly £3k
DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 29/03/2021 21:01

@user64332 - you're probably a lot cleverer than me, but I didn't realise our IKEA sofas each came in 28 boxes and required pretty much building from scratch!

They are brilliant and comfortable though (after we booked a person to assemble them).

1Morewineplease · 29/03/2021 21:26

No, I'd never buy a sofa without trying it first.

MiaowMiaow99 · 29/03/2021 21:35

I'm in exactly the same boat, I've got my eye on the Isla sofa (x 2) so understand the temptation. However in 14 days I can actually get in a sofa shop, so would rather wait and buy with confidence. Sofa.com WILL have another sale. Promise.

AC2022 · 29/03/2021 21:43

We did this last year, we live somewhere rural and I was happy to take their risk. It paid off. Sofa is comfy and I have no regrets.

DiscustinHunAmFummin · 29/03/2021 21:47

Can you all please state which sofa and retailer you bought from without trying first!!! Grin

I am in the exact same predicament but a different retailer and I've thought of nothing else for weeks now. Mine is less money but I've not much to start with!

MsFogi · 29/03/2021 21:51

I would wait. We have 5 sofas from Sofa.com and I love them all BUT when we went to the showroom to order the sofas we had decided on we totally changed our mind about which models to get and we also changed our mind about the fabric we had for the ones in our living room. Even if they don't have the model with the fabric on display they have all the models and you can drape the fabric over them to get an idea - it makes a big difference to think it through like that. Sofa.com does regular offers so I really wouldn't rush the discount will be on again.
We also nearly bought sofas from Loaf (before we bought from sofa.com) but luckily went to the showroom to see before ordering and we absolutely hated how low and messy they looked in real life. So lucky escape there!

MrsPatterson2014 · 29/03/2021 21:53

We bought ours from Snug unseen, happy with it and also went for it is broken down. Came in 3 boxes - took about 10 minutes to assemble - only about £1000. We are happy with it .

BornOnTwelthNight · 29/03/2021 21:59

Nope, never again will I buy I sofa without trying it first. Did this when we moved here 15 year’s ago, sold it 2 months later. It was horrid.

I like to be able to sink in, stretch out and curl my feet up, so definitely needs to be tested!

Galliano · 29/03/2021 22:04

It is a good offer - although they regularly do offers I think 20% + fabric protection is quite infrequent. I think if you ordered today it’s actually quite unlikely that they’d have started making it by 12/04 so maybe you could go to a showroom that week and if you hate it cancel it. I have 4 of their sofas and my experience has been they only actually start making them after they have booked a delivery date with you (presumably because they have limited storage). I would have thought they’d also let you amend the fabric to another in the same band if you contacted them quickly.

Iflyaway · 29/03/2021 22:05

What??!

I have the loveliest, comfyest (sp? lol) sofa from Ikea that cost € 600,--.

I'd be putting that surplus into a rainy-day/running-away/pension fund.
