On the news, Boris says he wants to kick start fitness and exercise in England today. He says children should be doing an hour a day of exercise whilst adults should be doing 150 minutes Shock
Who has two and half hours spare to exercise a day? Apart from that prat with his hired help.

YANBU - you don’t have 150 mins spare a day to exercise
YABU - you exercise for at least 150 mins a day and I’m being lazy and can’t prioritise!

He must have meant 150 minutes a week. That's the normal goal

I keep wanting to fit it in, starting and then stopping because it's hard to tack on to a full working day. If you also have children to look after I can't imagine.

Cocopogo · 29/03/2021 09:21

@Wakemeuuuup ah ok that would make more sense. I thought surely children are more active not less

ThereforeIAm · 29/03/2021 09:22

Yes I thought that was per week!

Same4Walls · 29/03/2021 09:22

Well I'd be happy to oblige if he sent someone to look after my toddler for 2 and a half hours a day. Grin Otherwise not a bloody chance.

Cocopogo · 29/03/2021 09:22

@dudsville I try to do a 20 mins YouTube work out a day, nevermind 150 mins!

YANBU. It's an unrealistic goal for many people. I manage 30 minutes - hour each evening and even then it's a struggle to fit it in.

AaronStampler · 29/03/2021 09:22

That's sloppy writing by the journalist. The recommendation is 150 minutes per week.

ThereforeIAm · 29/03/2021 09:23

Not clear in that article though.

JADS · 29/03/2021 09:23

Is it not an hour a day for kids and 150 minutes per week for adults?

LouNatics · 29/03/2021 09:23

He means per week. I average 420 active minutes a week - an hour a day.

RizzleRazzle · 29/03/2021 09:23

That's what I thought too but it appears he did mean 150 minutes day!
Cottoncandyisland · 29/03/2021 09:25

@LouNatics

When you work out your average active minutes, do you include just walking?

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 29/03/2021 09:26

It's just a badly written article, they mean 150 minutes a week.

Two and a half hours a day would be unrealistic for most people. My brother's husband is a super-fit personal trainer and even he doesn't do that (not every day, anyway).

Ponoka7 · 29/03/2021 09:27

At first I thought he just meant 150 minutes moving and not sitting. For those running around after toddlers etc, that's easily doable and for those of us without cars and spaced out bus stops. But he's slipped up again.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/03/2021 09:31

It's 150 minutes a week. Not even half an hour a day.

But YABU to take anything that falls out of BJs mouth as any sort of policy. He couldn't even get the first, likely scripted and rehearsed, lockdown message right (he said only go to work if your work is essential not only go to work if you can't WFH, not the same at all and led to many businesses closing unnecessarily).

LouNatics · 29/03/2021 09:33

Depends on the walking. Wandering round the park with the kids or walking round Tesco, no. Timed brisk warm up walks before a run, or a hilly hike at a good sustained speed, yes.

Juliesipadwillcallyouback · 29/03/2021 09:33

It's definitely a week! Even relatively fit people would probably struggle with 2 and a half hours of proper exercise a day!

Juliesipadwillcallyouback · 29/03/2021 09:35

Its supposed to be something that actually raises your heart rate as well, so just walking around as opposed to sitting down doesn't count.

Macncheeseballs · 29/03/2021 09:36

Per week, its easy

Salanda · 29/03/2021 09:45

Per week! The target has been set so that it should be achievable for a lot of people. If they said you need to do one hour a day, most people would think that I achievable and just not bother at all. But 150 minutes a week should seem more realistic..... If you did just 20 minutes a day, you’d get to 140 minutes a week. Or three one hour classes a week would get you to 180 minutes.

It needs to be exercise that’s elevating your heart rate - a brisk walk, an exercise class, a run/jog etc.

Salanda · 29/03/2021 09:47

If they said you need to do one hour a day, most people would think that unachievable

SmashedAvocado · 29/03/2021 09:50

I used to do 2 and a half hours a day 6 days a week when gyms were open. Cardio, weights, then swim. DC are all older though and I only work p/t. I loved it and thought of it as time I could have been sitting on my arse on the internet put to much better use.

I do around an hour and a half 5/6 days a week at home now with a cross trainer, weights and floor work. Quite easy to fit in across the day. I just put on gym wear in the morning and do it as I want to. There are lots on online workouts you don’t need equipment for nowadays.

It has completely transformed how I feel physically and mentally. I’m approaching 50 and was very unfit, overweight and in pain when I started.

Many people who have seen the change in me have commented that they want to do it but hate/can’t exercise. Well I used to feel exactly the same way Grin.

JustSleepAlready · 29/03/2021 10:18

But surely everyone has a personal trainer and money and time and lives just like BOJO? What do you mean we don’t all have privilege and money and the boyz in our life?
