Who has 150 minutes spare to exercise?

On the news, Boris says he wants to kick start fitness and exercise in England today. He says children should be doing an hour a day of exercise whilst adults should be doing 150 minutes Shock
Who has two and half hours spare to exercise a day? Apart from that prat with his hired help.

YANBU - you don’t have 150 mins spare a day to exercise
YABU - you exercise for at least 150 mins a day and I’m being lazy and can’t prioritise!

It's 3x 30 min sessions and an hours walk on a Sunday, hardly needs a restructure of someone's life. I'm sure most people squeeze in far more tv per week.

AlrightTreacle · 29/03/2021 19:18

My sibling always tells me they don't know how I fit in time to exercise. They watch every episode of Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Home and Away, and Neighbours. I did point out that they watch nearly 2 hours of soaps a day, and maybe they could get an exercise bike to use while watching them. Didn't go down well.

WinterStrawbsAreLikeTurnip · 29/03/2021 19:27

Watching casualty from Saturday on an exercise bike at present 🤣

I do an hour a day 5 or 6 times a week and then a walk the other 2 days as active rest. I started this during lock down and it has stuck. It's changed how I feel about myself and has probably saved me from MH issues during this time. I use an online platform with live classes and catch ups. So much less faff than driving to a gym.

It's not always excuses. My little boy had cmpa, screamed all day for 14 weeks, (cutting out dairy finally helped), only slept on me during nap time. Between 14 weeks and 6 months, he wouldn't go down anywhere for more than ten minutes. Buggy? Hell no. Screamed after 5 minutes. And I love walking. I would have happily walked for hours with him in the buggy. Now he's 8 months old and since around 6 months, he's finally happy in the sling so I go out with him in that. I still only get 30 minutes but it's better than nothing.

Some people really do struggle when they are young.

SnoogyWoo · 29/03/2021 21:57

Just get a skipping rope and do 10 mins a day.

Wateruniform · 30/03/2021 18:50

Mine too @RLJ1905. And people upthrenad with health conditions etc. We all should fit in more exercise but in a world where you need 2+ incomes just to survive and long hours are common, it's a problem of society not of individuals.

Cocopogo · 01/04/2021 12:25

@SnoogyWoo glad you think it’s that simple, good for you.

Meanwhile people who are over weight find it hard to jump and also a lot of women suffer from urinary incontinence when they jump.

OK not skipping then, choose another form of exercise. Small steps, do a plank whilst waiting for the kettle to boil etc, money and time are not reasons not to exercise

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/04/2021 13:01

Nhs says
do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity a week
So 7 days it's 20min a day of moderate activity or 10 minutes a day of vigorous activity. (And change)
You could do a sprint on a spot for 10 min and that's it. Squat for a minute few times a day or anything what's doable. If you raise your heart rate, that's good. I do morning body wake up while waiting for water to boil. 20 sit ups, 20 squats, 20 push ups, 20 second run on spot. It's great way to wake the body up and takes couple of minutes.

Housework is counted too according to some tables. I guess they don't mean standing by sink washing up, but if you put some more moves into a simple hoovering it can be quite a heart rate raising event.

There is just no way that unless extremely special circumstances, a person cannot get 20min of medium activity in 24 hours.

LuaDipa · 01/04/2021 13:02

I force myself to do at least an hour of exercise a day, preferably outside. I try and get up early before everyone else is up, or I go after work and it is a good way to split my work/home day. If I’m really stretched and genuinely can’t fit that in, or it’s raining too much I do a 30 minute Hiit Class. I have Les Mills On Demand but there are loads on YouTube.

SimonJT · 01/04/2021 14:25

It isn’t a lot over a week, I very much doubt Johnson is doing it. If we’re honest if we have time to watch TV, go on the internet etc we have time to exercise. Ideally some needs to be weight bearing to improve bone health, so running, skipping, stair climbing, but also things like the use of resistance bands and cross training are good for bone health.

I average 45 minutes a day, but one of my jobs is playing a sport so being work fit is very important.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 01/04/2021 16:50

I do 150 minutes (according to my FitBit) in the first hour and a half of my day at work. I'm just working, which involves a mixture of sitting down for about five minutes at a time, standing up, walking around, trips across the site, carrying things, going up and down multiple flights of the stairs because apparently no child or staff member was disabled in the 1970s when it was built and general trips to the photocopiers/kettle/distributing post/going to chat to somebody or ask questions.

I suppose if you drove a car to work, parked right outside, had staff to go to the photocopier for you, only ever communicated with colleagues via email or phone, didn't have a desperate need for a shit black coffee at 7.05am and went no further than your car at lunchtime, I suppose it's harder to get the mileage in. Assuming somebody else does all the housework, cooking and putting away the Ocado delivery as well.

But I see myself as a fundamentally lazy shite who needs the gym back open so I can do proper exercise that doesn't damage my fucked up joints, so the idea this is all that's needed in a week to make a difference seems ridiculous.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 01/04/2021 16:52

(yes, I know 90 minutes =/= 150 minutes, it's the equivalent FitBit gives you for your heart rate, activity and steps - there are also the other hours of the day where I'm doing much the same as well)

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 01/04/2021 16:58

I wish Mr Johnson and everyone in the cabinet had 150 minutes a day for exercise. From being former cabinet members and a former Prime Minister, and in the case of some of them, in a prison exercise yard.
