On the news, Boris says he wants to kick start fitness and exercise in England today. He says children should be doing an hour a day of exercise whilst adults should be doing 150 minutes Shock
Who has two and half hours spare to exercise a day? Apart from that prat with his hired help.

YANBU - you don’t have 150 mins spare a day to exercise
YABU - you exercise for at least 150 mins a day and I’m being lazy and can’t prioritise!

@JUSTSLEEPALREADY
BUT SURELY EVERYONE HAS A PERSONAL TRAINER AND MONEY AND TIME AND LIVES JUST LIKE BOJO? WHAT DO YOU MEAN WE DON’T ALL HAVE PRIVILEGE AND MONEY AND THE BOYZ IN OUR LIFE?

I'm confused why you would think you need money or a personal trainer to walk round the block .
There loads of free stuff about

I doubt they mean continuous, out of breath exercise. It should be very doable for adults with no health issues. I went for an hour long walk during lunch break so 60mins. With pottering about, walking about the house, that can clock up. I need to go to asda this evening but ill walk 10mins to the bus stop, get off bus early and walk 15mins to the shop and the same on the reverse. Will easily make it and its not impossible. Exercise doesnt have to mean a run or the gym. Exercise can just be a walk! Which is good for mental health too

Madein1995 · 29/03/2021 14:13

Per week? Thats piss easy - works out as less than half an hour a day? Struggle t9 believe that anyone except those with conditions or very young newborns cant donit. Dance with ypur baby in arms. Dance with toddler. Walks. Etc. Not hard.

ghostyslovesheets · 29/03/2021 14:19

210 mins a week - here on average - it's perfectly doable

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 29/03/2021 14:20

I do at least 150 minutes a day of exercise virtually every day. But it's basically work so it's not hard to fit it in and not relevant to those juggling sedentary jobs and childcare. 150 minutes a week is more achievable, but that article (and possibly BS Johnson's speech) are appallingly written.

ghostyslovesheets · 29/03/2021 14:21

I do have a 'PT@ - my lovely slightly mad boot camp instructor - I pay him £5 a week for a hour of torture , I also run and use free weights - not big expense once you've got some trainers and dumb bells (Aldi!)

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 29/03/2021 14:21

Ah, that first sentence was appallingly worded, which is ironic in the context of the last sentence Blush

SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/03/2021 14:26

It says physical activity, not just exercise. Afaik it counts walking for example to and from transport, cleaning like hoovering etc.

gwenneh · 29/03/2021 14:29

Per week? That's nothing. I ride horses 2 days per week -- job DONE.

Still fat, though.

yeOldeTrout · 29/03/2021 16:07

I'm surprised at the number of people who think walking to the shops is "exercise".

Brisk walking counts, according to the CMOs. (Especially if pushing a buggy, imho).

I've gone through spells when I'd have found it hard to fit in 20 minutes a day. Even so I would vigorously clean the house to music or dance around with the kids. I would do bodycoach workouts and kids would watch or join in.

I find it easier now our children are in school (I do count the school run as exercise even though it is only a total of 4k a day but we always walk at a speedy pace as I tell the kids we are running late and it gets them moving quicker!)

These days I'll get up at go for a run at 6.30am and I tell the kids they have to be dressed before I get home. Or I run after dropping them off at school. I only work part time at the moment but starting full time work soon and I intend to keep up the running.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/03/2021 16:30

I do about 2 and a half hours of walking every day. I can't drive so it's second nature. 30 minute walk to school with DS, then a 40 minute walk to my work from the school. Then the return journey in the afternoon. I work PT though.

Have you seen how fast my toddler walks?! Grin I'm always amazed my the number of people who tell me I must be so fit chasing after my toddler. The only time I've remotely raised my heart rate walking with him was when I was about to give birth to his sister!
bjjgirl · 29/03/2021 17:10

I do this, it's easy, part of my routine. My children also get an hour as they do the same sport as us.

Lunch time I do a 5km run, then after work 2 hours of martial arts

FireflyRainbow · 29/03/2021 17:12

I have the time in the evening but i spend it eating and watching TV 😂

ElphabaTheGreen · 29/03/2021 17:19

I absolutely love exercise, but with a FT job and two primary age DCs, 150 minutes a week is impossible. During the week, I would have to exercise before 5am or after 8pm (both equally unachievable for me as I have a few long-term health conditions as well) and trying to do anything at the weekend just shifts my guilt from my self-care-guilt box into my mum-guilt box since to get anything resembling a decent work out, I have to take time out from the DCs who barely see me during the week.

After many years of driving myself into the ground to try and shoe horn exercise into my impossible schedule, and just feeling like a shit even more exhausted mum, I’ve given myself the permission to let it go completely and I feel 100% better. I have a fairly active job on hospital wards and will always go for a walk or bike ride with the family if we want to. But routinely doing 150 mins per week of decent exercise cannot be done here.

loveisanopensore · 29/03/2021 17:20

The Google for app will record your active times.
I have zero desire to join a gym but I do stay active by walking and cycling where possible instead of carving out a specific exercise time.

Macncheeseballs · 29/03/2021 17:51

I dont pay any money to exercise

BogRollBOGOF · 29/03/2021 17:55

Breaking it down into a couple of 10 minute bursts per day makes it far more achievable for the majority of people. Youtube has done wonders in making short bursts of exercise more accessible in recent years.

Time isn't an issue for me these days, but when the DCs were very little, I managed to shoehorn stuff in between feeds and at the arse ends of the day. I did C25k because I could do it at stupid o'clock at night after the cluster feeds and bedtime feed. That was fun when I went back to work shortly still plodding on after bronchiolitis and mastitis resetting my progress after a few weeks. However it was worth it. I quickly go insomniac without exercise and feel lousy so it was well worth the effort.

The baby/ toddler years are relatively short. By the time they get to 4, they get more functional and easier to do something around.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 29/03/2021 18:05

Parents and guardians are being urged to help their children follow the Chief Medical Officer’s guidance and aim for at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, and adults to aim for at least 150 minutes, or two and a half hours, a week.

Poor journalism, it's 150 minutes weekly

I'm quite sure that he's been misquoted or mis spoke.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 29/03/2021 18:36

@greenlynx

Oh great! Now I know where BJ is spending his days , he’s exercising. And it’s clear why he hadn’t got spare time to attend some meetings and to read some documents last year.

And yes, I know it should be per week but the article implies that it’s per day.

He clearly isn't.
motherrunner · 29/03/2021 18:51

I run for an hour a day. I teach full time and have 2 primary DC. I get up at 4.45am. Run from 5-6. Shower, dress and get kids up and dressed. Off to breakfast club at 7.30 and then into work. It can be done.

Pviolet · 29/03/2021 19:05

I walk briskly to work and back, three half half hour runs a week, three twenty minute kettle bell workouts and half an hour of yoga daily, I easily clock up 500 plus active minutes in a week.

AlrightTreacle · 29/03/2021 19:11

I walk for at least an hour first thing every morning, do 10 minutes of yoga in the morning and evening, and run for about 45 minutes 3 times a week. So I probably get in 150 minutes about half the week.
