"The general view is people have had quite a few days off, and it wouldn't be a bad thing for people to see their way round to making a passing stab at getting back into the office." Boris Johnson.

I know plenty of people who this applies to

NailsNeedDoing · 28/03/2021 14:34

It’s disrespectful to anyone that has been following the rules he introduced to stay at home and be on furlough, and it’s disrespectful to anyone who’s been made to WFH when they haven’t wanted to.

I don’t see how it’s disrespectful to everyone who has worked from home though because plenty of people have enjoyed it and want to continue. I also can’t see where people homeschooling comes into it now that children are back at school.

murasaki · 28/03/2021 14:36

When I go back to the office, I'll probably work about 2 hours fewer per day, and not have my emails open on the weekend. So he can do one if he thinks I've been skiving and takng days off. I wish.

Bagamoyo1 · 28/03/2021 14:37

@Bluntness100

I don’t get why this is about women homeschooling? A fuck ton of people have been furloughed, some for the best part of a ‘year, so yeah getting back to work is a good thing cor many, not more holidays.

What’s he supposed to say “ well obvs exc women (not men though) who have wfh and homeschooled”

Honestly are you just looking to be offended.

I agree. And actually in the past year mumsnet has been full of threads of people wondering how to fill their time, which hobbies to take up, enjoying baking and crochet and so on. So I reckon there are many people out here who have done very little work, and it would be good for them to get back out there.
Doyoumindfisithere · 28/03/2021 14:39

The problem is he is imagining we are like him - lazy lazy lazy and permanently lying.

RiojaRose · 28/03/2021 14:40

I’ve been working much longer hours for an entire year now, as well as trying to support my children with their school work. I have not had a few days off. In fact, it has been impossible for me to take the annual leave I’m entitled to take because there has been so much extra work. I would love to get back to the office but it isn’t safe for me yet, in part because of Boris Johnson’s government’s bad decisions. Boris Johnson can fuck off.

GCAcademic · 28/03/2021 14:41

Who has been home schooling? Surely that is the nanny’s job?

DarkDarkNight · 28/03/2021 14:41

I don’t see how it’s about WFH and homeschooling.

It’s just a typical Tory narrative, setting up an ‘us vs them’ scenario, painting anybody on furlough or working from home as slacking. He’s utterly contemptuous of anyone who has to work for a living.

Sansaplans · 28/03/2021 14:42

He does realise work from home involves working? Confused

mbosnz · 28/03/2021 14:42

Buuuut, poor Bory can't affoooord a nanny on his pitiful wages!
Viviennemary · 28/03/2021 14:43

I agree. Some people use every excuse in the book. If they don't want to work then resign and let somebody who does have the job.

Grin Perhaps he's just miffed cos the First Girlfriend wasn't allowed to have one? Or has that changed recently?

This thread is just a reason to do some Boris bashing. It’s not serious. Any reason would do.

Although to be fair this one is stretching a bit. We all know plenty of people have worked additionally and had it hard. We all know plenty of people haven’t, being furloughed, or working from home with no kids, no commute and everything a bit easier. He’s clearly not stating “ I think mothers who work from home and have home schooled have had enough time off so should get back to the office” so why anyone is pretending they think that’s what he’s specifically saying beats me

Just say “ I hate him, im a Labour supporter, can we have a thread where we all call him a cunt please”.

thecatsthecats · 28/03/2021 14:46

I don't have kids, and wfh has saved me commuting time, but not really that much time. I'm a big wfh fan, but it's anything but a doss.

(I have long covid and this is a big year for our company, so on balance I'd simply say that I wouldn't have coped dragging my carcass into the office every day. )

I haven't volunteered or helped with Covid in any way, but I have worked bloody hard whilst suffering debilitating fatigue, kept my staff working, kept our service functioning and spent money within the economy.

So he can feck off calling it a holiday.

hanahsaunt · 28/03/2021 14:47

I despise Johnson for myriad reasons. I am the largely resilient type but for some reason when I read the article I was deeply and profoundly hurt. He just has no idea.

ArcheryAnnie · 28/03/2021 14:47

The thing about Boris is that he's massively projecting: he has form for wanting jobs which carry a huge amount of responsibility, and then not actually doing them, but playing hookey to do whatever (or it now seems, whoever) else takes his fancy.

Of course he sees homeschooling as "days off" because he's never homeschooled a day in his life. Remember, this is a man in the public eye where we are not entirely sure how many children he has.

Of course he sees WFH as "days off", because that's how he treats them.

He's a monstrously lazy, irresponsible git, and he has no idea most people aren't like that.

ArcheryAnnie · 28/03/2021 14:50

As for "Boris bashing" - it's not like he's a difficult target. Just look at his record. If you aren't Boris-bashing, then I would suggest you are woefully ill-informed.

SoWhyNot · 28/03/2021 14:52

I know some furloughed people with no children who have had the loneliest months/year of their lives. I’d guess that very few people have actively enjoyed the last year.

Boris has never lived in the real world. He has absolutely no idea.

Shnuffles · 28/03/2021 14:53

Looking at the context, I think it's fairly clear that he wasn't saying women who have homeschooled and wfh are lazy layabouts who need to get back to work.

@FourWordsImMuNiTy

It’s a stupid thing for him to say, because it will wind up all the many people who’ve been overstretched for the last year, especially parents. But as a population we have had a huge amount of time off of course. I assumed he’s referring to everyone who’s been on furlough.
Complete rubbish. Some people have been on furlough. Others (most) have worked full time or their normal hours as usual but while having no childcare or schooling for their kids for a large chunk of the time.

And working at home is working. Boris is a twit but he's one of a lot of twits who think if you are not in the office you are not working.

Angry
MrsIsobelCrawley · 28/03/2021 14:54

All the more ironic coming from Mr Lazy Bollox himself!

ThePlantsitter · 28/03/2021 14:56

Looking at the context, I think he's saying people don't deserve an extra holiday because they've been given lots of extra holiday. Which is really demonstrating his lack of awareness of what most people have been doing this last year.

I don't necessarily think we should have another bank holiday but as a reason that's pretty aggravating to a lot of people.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/03/2021 14:56

@WiseUpJanetWeiss

He’s an offensive idiot. OK, furloughed people with no children have had a long extended “holiday” but given the risk of there being no job to go back to, or if they have not been able to make ends meet, it’s not exactly been a picnic.

For everyone else - those homeschooling while WFH, and those of us who have been working flat out long hours in our spare rooms and kitchens for a year - it’s been a slog and we’re knackered.

I’ve carried 10 AL days and 5 lieu time days over into the next leave year, but those lieu days don’t even scratch the surface of what I’ve actually worked.

Plus there's all the frontline NHS who've probably done endless overtime rather than having 'quite a few days off'.

Wouldn't it be nice if they could have a free extra day off, but the NHS probably doesn't have the capacity to do it.

A minority will have been on furlough and not had to homeschool. But there's plenty of others who will have done their role fully, at home but just as hard work or more so, those who've had to combine WFH and childcare, homeschooling, and those who've been on extra shifts because they work in NHS, supermarkets or deliveries, where demand has increased.

mbosnz · 28/03/2021 14:57

I very much doubt Mr Johnson thought about the wimmens at all. Unless he's dipping his wick into them, why would he. . .
