"The general view is people have had quite a few days off, and it wouldn't be a bad thing for people to see their way round to making a passing stab at getting back into the office." Boris Johnson.

@PersimmonTree

You prove my point exactly. Since when was 43.9% of the electorate a majority? You have absolutely no idea what PR is, or why we don't have it yet (because it suits the Tories to keep FPTP).

Don't be so ridiculous.

You know full well that I was talking about 'the majority who voted' wanting Brexit.

flamedsochanged · 28/03/2021 17:08

so much nonsense on this thread, Boris knows exactly what he is saying at all times, and how to get a reaction.
for the PP who said minority gov. 46% of the people who voted put an X beside Conservative, more than any other party so a majority. The 15 million registered voters who didn't vote don't count. Most of you would vote Tory again.
according to MN, i must be the only person in the country who worked full time WFH and had kids doing schoolwork at home( Homeschooling is VERY different)who managed to have days off.

PersimmonTree · 28/03/2021 17:12

No, not me being ridiculous. In the first bit of your post you weren't talking about Brexit, but about this bunch of clowns being "what more people wanted".

BJ's circus was voted for by the minority, 43.9%, which is the best our abysmal electoral system can offer. And nobody can be arsed to change that system, it seems. So we'll all get more of it. From being apathetic.

Runnerduck34 · 28/03/2021 17:17

Having read the article I didnt interpret it as him referring to people, probably mainly women, who have WFH and home schooled.
I thought he might be referring to people who have been furloughed? However as someone who has worked from home, long hours on a makeshift desk in my bedroom and home schooled I would welcome an extra day off! A lot of people have been working flat out during lockdown.
I can see why the Conservatives wont people to go back to the office, (also mentioned in the article) it will be better for the economy and on a personal level also probably better for a lot of them as I suspect a lot of them own the office blocks!!

catspider · 28/03/2021 17:17

Gosh, he must be terrified that his rich chums are losing money from empty office space. Back to work plebs!

Y'know, people keep coming out with this, that Boris is actually a genius who knows how to manipulate the media etc and it's all an act.

I'm actually inclinded to believe in the far simplier explaination that the man is a fucking moron and really is just as big of a prick as he comes across.

icdtap · 28/03/2021 17:21

The general view is people have had quite a few days off, and it wouldn't be a bad thing for people to see their way round to making a passing stab at getting back into the office

I find the tone of this disrespectful "making a passing stab at getting back into the office"?
WTF? I thought people were supposed to be WFH as that's what the government said.
People have been WFH and homeschooling kids at the same time but even those who have been WFH without kids haven't been sitting around on their arses doing fuck all.
And as for people on furlough who might not have had any work to do, it's not like it's their fault they are on furlough with no work. His tone implies a load of people have been sitting around on their lazy backsides doing nowt simply because they couldn't be arsed and therefore it wouldn't be too much to ask for them to get back to the office.

Cheeking fucking bastard.

Pyewackect · 28/03/2021 17:21

............ how many millions are still on furlough ?.

middleager · 28/03/2021 17:22

The good old back to work narrative begins.

Only many of us continued to work in our jobs, harder than ever, in the home, while tending to the education and needs of our families.

Bourbonic · 28/03/2021 17:25

If you haven't had "lots of days off" then why are you taking his comment as being aimed at you?

Lots of people have had lots of days off.

LemonTT · 28/03/2021 17:25

I have to come down on the side that says business, people and the state can ill afford to fund an additional bank holiday this year. Not by a lot, as I know a lot of people have worked very very hard this year. But they are sort of essential anyway and probably haven’t take their leave total.

His words were careless but in context I think the outrage is OTT. I don’t think the populous will support another bank holiday especially keyworkers / parents.

I think the second part of your explanation is spot on - and I don't know about the "fucking moron" bit, though - whether he's actually clever, or whether he is just imbued with a low, animal cunning that fills his lizard brain and enables him to spot and exploit situations just as an instinctive reaction to opportunity or danger.

He's a git, whatever the explanation is.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 28/03/2021 17:29

Sorry - somehow I managed to quote a post that was unrelated to my comment and didn't even realise I'd done it until I posted.

I hold my hands up to being technologically thick as pigsh*t. In my defence I make a good cheese scone . . .

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/03/2021 17:34

He can fuck right off. I've gone to work 5 days a week (NHS) since this pandemic started.

lockeddownandcrazy · 28/03/2021 17:37

Very disrespectful to those who have worked through. Those on furlough who have a had a year off paid at 80% maybe he has a point

Eleganz · 28/03/2021 17:46

"Those Tory donor commercial landlords and inner city coffee and sandwich chain owners won't get their cheque books out while you lot are sat on your arses at home!"

Is pretty much what he really was saying.

They don't want you working from home, it means you and your employer will spend money in other areas that don't have the PM's ear.

Eleganz · 28/03/2021 17:50

Bank Holidays make lots of money for tourism, leisure and retail sectors. You know the sectors that have been really badly hit by the pandemic. The economy is not a monolith.

Ban holidays generate quite a lot of revenue for the hardest-hit sectors though so I would want to see some actual numbers on this.
Doyoumindfisithere · 28/03/2021 17:54

Bank holidays, not ban holidays

CorianderBee · 28/03/2021 17:55

Also doesn't make sense. I've been at home the whole time but have also worked the entire time. Hasn't depended on me being in the office...

ItscoldinAlaska · 28/03/2021 17:58

The people on here rushing to defend him are hilarious. He isn't 'your mate Boris', he doesn't give two fucks about you and wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire. His moral compass is fucked, he laughs (or worse) at people he considers 'less'. You are one of them and here you are defending him. Makes me feel very queasy to read it.

Laughingstock91 · 28/03/2021 17:59

He’s a complete waste of space, ignorant, privileged, entitled c**t - why people vote these people in over and over again is beyond me 🤦‍♀️

ItscoldinAlaska · 28/03/2021 18:00

And he said this at a rail conference. A rail conference. You know, full of people with a vested interest in getting commuters back into the office to shore up their business. He is just saying what they want to hear. He probably gave zero thought when he was saying it and zero thought after it.

Because 'zero thought' is really what you want from the PM!
AndAPartridgeInABearTree · 28/03/2021 18:03

Clearly 19th century thinking where, if you weren't in the factory, you weren't working.

In fact if I'm in the office I'm not what I would call 'working'. My role involves meeting people at a place where they're comfortable which is almost never the office!

Myopic, backward, narrow minded thinking which perpetuates the presenteeism culture I left my previous job to avoid!
