Last night I went up to bed to be greeted by this on my headboard (hopefully photo will work). I wasn’t brave enough to tackle it myself and my husband missed it so it ran over the bed and disappeared . I slept downstairs. I’m going to have to move aren’t I?! How long can they live ?!

I caught a big one in a takeaway box in my house last week and despatched it outside down a drain on the street. Yuck.

You all need cats. Spiders don’t stand a chance.

OysterMonkey · 27/03/2021 19:37

Jesus Spangly.
You need to post a warning before putting hideous things like that up.

Red2017 · 27/03/2021 19:37

I went into my basket yesterday to get a scarf out. And sat on top of my scarf was a huge spider. I swear my soul left my body. He did look rather cosy. My cat obviously missed that one, she likes to leave a trail of dead spiders.

Well I tried to get this one, accidently took a leg off. Lost the spider. A couple of hours later and I'm just sat minding my own business, and there he is, just going for a stroll up my wall. I caught him. (I knew it was him, as he had a leg missing) .. I apologised to him profusely for his missing leg and bid him farewell out of the door.

Shock they shouldn't be about yet Shock

I'm petrified of spiders. I can't put them out, someone else has to do it (neighbours have been called upon before now!). When I was a teenager, we had a german shepherd who was pretty adept at catching them. I think he could sense that I was terrified of them so he thought he had to catch them to look after me Grin

A young colleague of mine has a pet tarantula. He suggested bringing it in for a visit. He was told in no uncertain terms to leave it at home Angry

Gandalfsthong · 27/03/2021 20:48

Horrifying. I thought it was September 😱 (runs to get the spider stop)

Is it just me or do ones in the U.K. seem to get bigger every year. I’m sure I don’t remember them being as monstrous when I was little. DP told me the big ones live in our homes all year round and only come out occasionally to find a mate. Is this true or do they come in from outside?

DarceyDashwood · 27/03/2021 22:25

Why did I read this thread just before bed 🤦‍♀️

ShowOfHands · 27/03/2021 22:35

My cat's a useless hunter. She never kills anything. She brings in mice and birds and lets them run and flap round the house whilst watching them fondly. Spiders she will pat and they curl up in a ball until she's finished and they then wander off. Good job I like spiders.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 27/03/2021 22:36

I found one of these, on a wooden compost box lid, two summers ago in my garden. This is a stock photo but I did take a photo at the time but on a different device and I can’t find it at the mo. But, it was very obvious, with the green ‘fangs’. I was so alarmed I called out the two guys I had decorating a bedroom to come and check it out, they really really tried to be all hard and not look scared 😂. It’s a Segestria Florentina

I'd rather a Huntsman than Cockroaches [shudder].

Here's something you can do to encourage any non paying tenants to stay away from the top of your bed - get a ball of paper, some pipecleaners, cotton and googly eyes. Make a silly, cute but large cartoon spider, the body being roughly the size of a 2p piece. Attach it to the back of your headboard using the thread.

It is absolutely guaranteed to scare the living bejesus out of all real spider and they will never go anywhere near your pillows as a result.

You may need to make sure that your DP/DH always goes behind the bed to pick things up, vacuum or change the bedlinen (like that's a bad thing for you), just so you don't forget there's a toy spider down there - but I've tested the toy spider theory on multiple species and they all do the spider equivalent of screaming and running away as soon as they've caught sight of it.

MacDuffsMuff · 27/03/2021 22:40

I like spiders. Marvellous creatures and they eat lots of other bugs in your house. Yours is a very handsome chap. 😊

Oh, that reminds me of the day I had to rescue the plumber from under the bath because he met a larger tenant under there and got stuck, kicking and screaming.

I had to straddle the poor man with a glass and cardboard to get to the right area to save him. I did wonder why he chose this particular line of work, but he was so embarrassed/grateful, he didn't charge for fitting the replacement mixer, so I was quite happy at the end of the day.

I know people say that cats sort it out... but URGH, I used to see the cats at my MIL's house attacking spiders and it made me feel more sick than just seeing the spiders. I also could not like the cats go anywhere near me with their spidery mouths. Shudder.

optimistic40 · 27/03/2021 22:47

*let, not like

Yeah, and my cats never actually killed the spiders. Just patted them enough to piss them off. Great, then I had massive AND angry spiders to deal with.
Pebbledashery · 27/03/2021 22:51

I live in a terraced house and both neighbours have cats.. They regularly come into my garden 🙄.. But I don't mind so much now I've read this thread, hopefully they'll catch the buggers before they make it into my house 😭😭. Since being single I've had two spider episodes.. I can't even bring myself to go anywhere near them.. So unfortunately... The Dyson does it....

pipsqueakbollock · 27/03/2021 23:04

I'm nervous to state this.... touching wood, praying aloud and asking fairies for help....

I grew up in a big old house with floorboards and open drains.
I'm terrified of house spiders.... they lurked everywhere, on my towel in the bathroom, sinks, the hallway REGULARLY which stopped me being able to go anywhere in the actual house

When I left home I lived in a....
Concrete 60's block flat.
Victorian (early) terrace yet modernised
1990's build semi.

I've not suffered spiders in any (one in the kitchen sink in the 1990 house).

I have deduced that open drains are the problem - all my entire plumbing ever since the childhood house track to closed soil stacks to exit the house.

(Plus I use clear mastic on every single gap such as TV or phone inlet, boiler pipe outlet, overflows..........)

Tempusfudgeit · 27/03/2021 23:20

At least it wasn't this ...

Hahaha @echt, I was just thinking of linking the same article as I read it this morning. Yikes!!!

Spanglybangles · 27/03/2021 23:33

@Awwlookatmybabyspider I am indeed, Scotland actually. Funnily enough, a friend in Oz asked if I was over there after I posted the same photo on my Facebook the night I caught it. Grin
