Last night I went up to bed to be greeted by this on my headboard (hopefully photo will work). I wasn’t brave enough to tackle it myself and my husband missed it so it ran over the bed and disappeared . I slept downstairs. I’m going to have to move aren’t I?! How long can they live ?!

Oh my god I had the same guy at my house yesterday. I was fucking FUMING as like you I wasn't expecting it in March! Luckily my husband managed to get it out it's hot today and I refuse to have the conservatory doors open because of it so I'm going to have a crap summer haha

AlanThePig · 27/03/2021 15:02

It's weird because in our old house we'd get huge, what my Dad called 'pit spiders' in the house.
Moved to this house and I can count on one hand the number of spiders I've had to rehome in 3 years. I can only conclude with the pond we have and the wildlife (bats, frogs, ducks etc) that they are kept in check.

So there is your solution OP, dig a pond, get some frogs 😂

SweetPetrichor · 27/03/2021 15:04

He’s just a moderately sized house spider - probably looking for a lady! He can’t harm you at all. He’s terrified of you.

It’s not a ‘big’ spider until it’s the size of your palm like my sweet little girl. Wink

What species is that?

Lachimolala · 27/03/2021 15:07

I regularly treat my whole house with Indorex flea spray, works a treat!

I’ve had spider therapy and all sorts and I still can’t beat them, I’m genuinely terrified of them to the point of panic attacks. I’m single this year as well, normally my ex would get them but it’s all down to me now, I’m honestly dreading September Confused

I can sort of cope with that because it's more of a small furry than a spider. She's so shiny. Grin

I have a deal with the cellar spiders- they can live in my house cos they don't run at me and are content to live in corners. In return they eat all the huge hairy feckers. This excellent arrangement has worked well for a few years now. You'd never suspect the tiny skinny spiders are vicious killers of the big ones.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 27/03/2021 15:15

They tend to hunt, as the name suggests. So they lay in wait and will lunge out at their prey.
Nah, that spider can sit nicely at the table and use a knife and fork like all the other house guests. Grin

I’ve heard that a lot but is it true? I’ve got loads of both kinds here. Or maybe if I didn’t have the skinny bastards there’d be a lot more of the fat hairy bastards?

OldGreyBoots · 27/03/2021 15:30

I'm with Sparklingbrook, I don't get freaked out by tarantula pics like I do with house spiders! It must be a proportion thing, they're nice and chunky looking Grin

I'm glad it's not just me. It's the spindly legged ones that turn my stomach.
Caramel81 · 27/03/2021 15:38

I’m absolutely terrified of them. When I lived on my own it was such a stress if I saw one. Thankfully I live with DP now and he isn’t bothered by them at all so can catch them and put them outside. I have a couple of big plastic bowl I keep in the living room and in my bedroom. If I see one on the floor then I try and put the bowl over it until DP can deal with it.
When I lived on my own I once saw TWO huge house spiders running around my living room at night. Don’t think I’ve ever been in such a panic before

OysterMonkey · 27/03/2021 15:40

I’m the same. The black tarantula pic is actually fine - looks silky smooth.
Cellar spiders - fine. As I know that they are goodies, and they normally just hang in the corner minding their own business. I can ever sleep in a room with these.
Big fat hairy bastard house spiders - no fucking way. I am literally out of the door.

Soubriquet · 27/03/2021 15:42

So what’s everyone’s take on jumping spiders?

Beautiful eyes, have a furry body but proportional legs

Magissa · 27/03/2021 15:49

If all spiders looked like this I wouldn't be so afraid

Peacock jumping spider!

Very beautiful

This has always been my argument for tarantulas being less scary... round and fluffy - they're practically hamsters with a few spare legs. Proper spiders are all skeletal and made of knees and look like aliens 😂
Soubriquet · 27/03/2021 15:55

Funny you should say that!

I once held a pink toed bird eating tarantula and shit myself nearly every second. But I had to admit it felt like an 8 legged hamster

SweetPetrichor · 27/03/2021 17:00

@Soubriquet

What species is that?
She’s a Grammostola pulchra (the Brazilian Black tarantula).

I started out terrified of all spiders, then I got interested in tarantulas which helped cure my fear of true spiders. I used to cry when I saw a house spider...now I actively look for them! Jumping spiders were the gateway arachnid for me though. They’re adorable.

Soubriquet · 27/03/2021 17:12

They really are Grin

I am determined to get one. I’m in contact with several breeders and someone who makes the right environment for them. Just waiting for the right time and money

BobBobBobbing · 27/03/2021 18:41

Judashascomeintosomemoney- I've seen the cellar spiders take down a big hairy fecker so they definitely eat them. When we first moved here I'd evict the cellar spiders and would be invaded by the hairy ones. Since I stopped removing the cellar spiders I've had hardly any of the big ones. I still pay the eldest child to act as spider patrol just in case. Any of the wrong kind breach the defences and he is responsible for catching them and taking them far away from the house.
