To audition for a film even though I’ve never acted?

GingerNinjer · 26/03/2021 07:21

Flyer calling for people with my accent to apply for a new project. No acting experience required. Well known director.
My last acting role was my school play when I was 11 years old as an extra 😂

They want a 1 minute video sent in ... it seems so unlikely but what if? Also should I mention my autism on the clip or would that look too try hard?

Argh!! Always dreamt of being an actress but I always knew it was a fantasy, this would be the first time I ever actually tried it! I’m a frumpy, 49 year old woman

I think it’s North Yorkshire, but it depends how much he sticks to the book.

GingerNinjer · 26/03/2021 08:11

@LunaNorth

Ah, I’m a Boothferry Estate lass, so an Airlie Bird to your Robin.

I’m ginger as well, if your name is anything to go by. We might end up duking it out for the same part Grin

Haha can you imagine! I’m hoping Sean Bean is in it and I’m cast as his wife ... maybe I’m getting ahead of myself slightly 😂😂

I thought This is England was set in Nottingham.

Twobrews · 26/03/2021 08:17

Sorry OP dropped my hair straighteners and posted too soon, you should definitely go for it.
Break a leg

AlexaShutUp · 26/03/2021 08:21

Good luck OP, and anyone else who goes for it!

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 26/03/2021 08:24

@LunaNorth

This sounds very thick, but it says on the flyer to label the video with your name.

How?

Save the video file as "FirstnameSurnameAudition_date" before sending it as an attachment.

If you've recorded the clip on your phone then find it using your phone's file manager and rename it before sending.

Or transfer the clip to your laptop/PC and rename it on there.

NotAPanda · 26/03/2021 08:24

Go for it!
Don’t think your autism is really relevant - if you can do the job why would it matter? 🙃

EggcellentTaste · 26/03/2021 08:27

I'm from Hull (no accent left) but am rooting for a 'frumpy, 49 year old woman' who's never acted before to be cast as Sean Bean's wife in a marriage based on lots of huggings.

It's a rags to artificially-created-by-the-wardrobe-department rags story Grin

Seriously - go for it! Well worth 60 seconds of your time.

LunaNorth · 26/03/2021 08:27

Ha, if you’re going to be Sean Bean’s wife in it, you’d better start practising your ‘grieving widow’ face!

Thanks for the labelling tips.

I’m starting to think I might actually have a go at this.

memberofthewedding · 26/03/2021 08:33

I was a film extra in my 40s. They could be looking for all types, sizes, ages and ethnicities depending on the project. There is a lot of standing around but being on a film set will give you a new insight into the industry, Go for it.

Cowbells · 26/03/2021 08:39

OP definitely do it.
For the clip - have a think of some anecdote in your life that is quite extreme but funny - maybe the daftest thing you ever did or the biggest mistake you ever made or a bizarre accident you survived. Or some time you were supposed to be responsible for something and it all went horribly wrong. Tell it with self-deprecating good humour and practise it a few times, timing it and cutting out the waffle so you get it down to 1 minute.

Record it a few times to check that you're not mumbling or stumbling and then send off the best version. Even if nothing else comes of it, it will be a great thing to have had a go at.

SilverRoe · 26/03/2021 08:39

Go for it. Do it with the attitude that filming yourself and sending it in is the achievement. Don’t focus on getting the part, focus on doing something way out of your comfort zone that opens a door to moving towards acting. Remember this isnt a one shot deal, all actors audition over and over again, so it’s the first step in experiencing that.

Cowbells · 26/03/2021 08:41

As to being autistic - famous actors Tim Burton, Paddy Considine and Daryl Hannah all are - it's no bar to being able to perform.

Madcats · 26/03/2021 08:42

Please apply. If you don't you will always be wondering "what if...".

How exciting!

Somuddled · 26/03/2021 08:49

It will be fun to make regardless of if it gets anywhere so go for it! I'd say that labelling the clip with your name means on the clip not just in the file name. Just edit into a strip at the bottom of the screen. Any free video app will allow you to do it

MasterBeth · 26/03/2021 09:02

Shane Meadows is based in Nottingham. This Is England was filmed largely in Yorkshire. The accents for that were something of a blend of Notts, Derbyshire, South and East Yorks... He tends to cast for authenticity rather than a complete fidelity to local accent (after all, people move around...)

jessstan2 · 26/03/2021 09:03

Go for it. You have nothing to lose. Good luck.

RLJ1905 · 26/03/2021 09:06

Definitely go for it! Absolutely nothing to lose and it sounds like good fun even if nothing comes from it!

Redsquirrel5 · 26/03/2021 09:10

Go for it. One of my old school friends is an actress now. She didn’t start until her forties. I was watching a film( not from this country) and said to DH that she looked a bit like my old school pal. Then curious about the film and location I looked it up and there in the credits was her name which jumped right out at me. I then looked her up ( lost touch years ago because we both moved a lot) and she is an actress and has been in several films and dramas. Watched another but she was a corpse very early into the film.

So you never know unless you try. Good luck.

LilQueenie · 26/03/2021 09:27

go for it. It gets easier the more you do it and you won't get anywhere unless you try.

SpacePug · 26/03/2021 09:38

I'm in hull too with a proper 'ull accent, what age group is it for? 😂

SpacePug · 26/03/2021 09:42

Just looked it up, strong northern accent desired, so probably more north Yorkshire, "cross t' road"

clpsmum · 26/03/2021 09:42

Go for it! Good luck

BigPaperBag · 26/03/2021 09:43

That’s so exciting! You could be discovered and be the next Emma Watson/Rebel Wilson/Judy Dench (insert favourite actor) Will you still grace MN when you’re famous??

GingerNinjer · 26/03/2021 09:44

They probably are looking for North Yorkshire but I’m going to give it a go anyway, I’ll always wonder if I don’t :-)
