Ironing

So, while we're on the subject of disgusting habits and cleaning bathrooms, can I ask, please, how you iron (properly)
And if you do it, why? I only iron school uniforms and work clothes, and then only if I must.

@RampantIvy out of interest, why pillowcases?

We have some cotton ones from John Lewis that are so creased and crumpled if I don't iron them. I don't have much ironing to do these days, and if something has been hanging out on the line it smells heavenky when I iron it.

PickAChew · 25/03/2021 19:09

@Same4Walls

You honestly cannot tell I don't iron. I know many who do iron will find it hard to believe but it's true.

I have always wondered though if those who do iron also dont reware things like jeans or jumpers more than once before washing and then reironing it?

Why would those two go hand in hand? I'm not going to take my time to iron my clothes only to chuck them back in the wash after a few hours' wear.
HighlandCowbag · 25/03/2021 19:17

I don't iron. It's not for me. I used to but now we have a tumble dryer and anything that doesn't come out hangable gets relegated to the back of the wardrobe. Dh occasionally drags the ironing board out and me and the dcs come running out with a top or jeans that would benefit from a quick run over.

Kids uniform are all easyiron (ie don't need it), dh a builder and I'm a student so no jeed for formal wear. I live in skinny jeans, harem pants and leggings, dh and ds in joggers and dd in sports leggings or pjs.

BurbageBrook · 25/03/2021 19:18

Hardly ever iron. I iron occasionally for work or a night out but tend to even choose stuff for work that doesn't require much ironing! I'll do it if absolutely necessary but often try not to.... always feels like a waste of time.

MatildaTheCat · 25/03/2021 19:26

I quite like ironing. Not shirts though, they go out. I’m quick and listen to the radio while working through a pile. I don’t like putting it away though.

Clothes and bedding look and feel nicer. That includes jumpers. I love debobbling too. 😁🤣

Same4Walls · 25/03/2021 19:38

I always wondered because after wearing something for the day surely it looks unironed. If the whole concept of ironing the clothes initially is because people think you can tell when they have not been ironed then surely they wouldn't want to wear them again the next day as they wouldn't look ironed?

the80sweregreat · 25/03/2021 19:39

I used to iron loads of shirts but it's all dropped off now. Maybe the odd t shirt these days, but mostly it's just folding things or just not bothering. It's liberating that it's become a non chore! It's odd how it was such a big thing once and now I don't even think about it at all!

ghostyslovesheets · 25/03/2021 19:42

@ichundich

Hotel bedsheets are super crisp and smooth because they are done in a big laundrette, which hangs them up on huge hangers and steams them. Or they might mangle them. Either way, it's impossible to replicate at home.
Starch - gets things lovely and crisp
EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 25/03/2021 19:42

Other than occasionally for pressing in invisible hemming tape to shorten trousers, I haven't ironed in about 30 years.
It was my go to diversion when I was studying for professional exams.
Purchased a shirt last summer that turned out to need ironing - that's going to a charity shop as soon as they reopen.

OnlyToWin · 25/03/2021 19:46

I love ironing.
I find it relaxing.
I love the ease of achieving something.
I used to iron everything but now I just do shirts and bedding - love a nice crisp pillowcase!!
Radio on - decent steam generator iron - love it!!

Roselilly36 · 25/03/2021 19:48

I iron too, usually once a week, cotton t-shirts, formal shirts look awful if they haven’t been ironed, I also iron bedding, it just looks so much nicer. I would definitely notice if someone was wearing clothing that hasn’t been ironed, I have a steam generator iron and can get items ironed quickly. I would feel really uncomfortable wearing clothing that hasn’t been ironed, I just couldn’t do it.

MintLampShade · 25/03/2021 19:48

We only iron clothes as and when we wear them, nothing in advance. DH does have a few non iron shirts and no uniforms yet for DS. I don't iron socks, pants, towels, pyjamas, jeans...maybe sheets if they come out of the dryer in an absolutely state but it's rare. DH and I do it equally. Whoever has the time.

ichundich · 25/03/2021 19:49

@ghostyslovessheets Do you know where I can buy starch from nowadays? I have previously looked in the supermarket but not really found anything.

CommanderBurnham · 25/03/2021 19:56

I iron. It keeps my wardrobe tidy, and I can fit more in.

I don't judge people who don't iron but I do notice sometimes.

I iron clothes straight off the airer so I don't have an ironing pile.

BUT I have lived in jumper dresses and leggings this past six months so let's see how things go!

Runnerduck34 · 25/03/2021 20:03

I like cotton clothes and bedding and they need ironing.
Some other items are ok to shake and fold but over we 50% needs ironing ,I hate hems that dont lay flat , crinkled collars, linings that are creased and don't sit right.
I probably make it worse as I don't have time to fold them straight away so ironing basket is a bit of a jumbled mess. MIL doesnt iron but she spends ages hanging things on the line in a perfect way , stretching them out etc then when dry she shakes and stretches them more and flattens/presses them with her hands before folding, I honestly think its quicker when I iron them.

user1497787065 · 25/03/2021 20:17

I'm happy to iron. I iron all shirts, t-shirts, bed linen, tea towels, jeans etc

I know it's an unpopular task on MN and 'life's too short to iron' is always quoted but I'd rather iron and see piles of neatly pressed clothing than waste hours on MN, FB, Twitter etc

Davros · 25/03/2021 20:55

I don't understand ironing towels, they're meant to be fluffy aren't they? We have a lot of 100% cotton clothes and bedding and they definitely look and feel better when ironed but lockdown has made my ironing less frequent

AlwaysLatte · 25/03/2021 21:02

I do the washing and my husband does the ironing. The only things that go into the ironing basket are duvet covers and pillowcases (cotton does crumple), shirts and smart (mostly school)) trousers, napkins and tablecloths and that's pretty much it. I used to iron absolutely everything.

TeamsTruant · 25/03/2021 21:10

I always found that ironed tops got crumpled in the wardrobe. Now we've got a clothes steamer in the bedroom so I don't bother ironing and just run the steamer over anything that needs it. DH does the same. Only thing I iron now is school shirts, not much else.

teenagetantrums · 25/03/2021 21:13

Never iron anything...used to kids school uniforms many years ago. Also my office clothes. Now l have a different job. No smart clothes. I think I'd you wash and hang clothes properly they won't need ironing

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 25/03/2021 21:21

What's an iron? 😏.

Shorthairlady · 25/03/2021 22:27

I send my clothes out to get ironed. A necessary indulgence.

the80sweregreat · 26/03/2021 09:04

I bought some starch out of savers ! It's hardly been used lately , but for shirts or t shirts it is wonderful stuff. About 1.50 for a tin.

Fifthtimelucky · 26/03/2021 12:13

Since I retired, I iron much less than I used to, but I do still iron some items:

Bedding: It's much nicer when ironed and it fits better in drawers/cupboard when being stored;
Drying up cloths: they fit better in drawers when being stored;
Husband's cotton hankies (again, better in drawers);
Clothes: normal clothes that would look wrinkly without being ironed, eg cotton skirts, and any clothes being worn for special occasions that need to look extra smart.
