Ironing

So, while we're on the subject of disgusting habits and cleaning bathrooms, can I ask, please, how you iron (properly)
And if you do it, why? I only iron school uniforms and work clothes, and then only if I must.

@ZaraW

It's only on MN that people don't iron unless all your clothing is synthetic? In real life everyone I know does it.

I iron, I feel crap if I wear crumpled clothing.

I was going to post exactly the same, I think I missed the rule when I joined but for some reason people who don't iron think they are in some way superior to those who do and have so much more important things to do with their time.

I know from conversations and you know by using my eyes that real life people do iron their clothes.

I've worked in many different jobs with all kinds of different people and it's obvious that they iron their stuff

GintyMcGinty · 25/03/2021 16:34

I iron everything - except my husband's clothes - he does his own.

Clothes, sheets, towels, pants, socks - the lot.

It makes everything look nicer and feel nicer against your skin.

My tips are use a fabric conditioner and buy a good quality iron.

tallullabluebella · 25/03/2021 16:34

I iron most clothing apart from the odd thing that really doesnt need it, but only when it's going to be worn.Things get put away straight from the dryer/line.
Only time I batch iron is for holiday packing and taking photos to put on ebay.
You can definitely see the difference between ironed and unironed clothes.

choirmumoftwo · 25/03/2021 16:35

I'm either a rarity or an oddity as I iron almost everything and really enjoy it, especially if it's line dried outdoors. I love the smell and seeing the creases come out. I find it relaxing.
I'm not as bad as my mum though - she irons underwear, socks and even towels!!

ichundich · 25/03/2021 16:35

Hotel bedsheets are super crisp and smooth because they are done in a big laundrette, which hangs them up on huge hangers and steams them. Or they might mangle them. Either way, it's impossible to replicate at home.

ZaraW · 25/03/2021 16:37

@ichundich

I only iron shirts and cotton summer dresses. I dry most of my washing on the line and fold it once dry. It doesn't look creased that way. Ironing uses absolute tons of electricity.
Lol seriously you made that up didn't you?

10p an hour for an iron.

Whatwouldscullydo · 25/03/2021 16:40

I have perfected my clothes purchasing to ensure no ironing is required.

Occasionally the hair straightners are used to sort out a stubborn crease

I cant eveb get to my iron ..its just a stunt iron.

ichundich · 25/03/2021 16:40

@ZaraW I stand corrected.

Same4Walls · 25/03/2021 16:45

You honestly cannot tell I don't iron. I know many who do iron will find it hard to believe but it's true.

I have always wondered though if those who do iron also dont reware things like jeans or jumpers more than once before washing and then reironing it?

Stellaris22 · 25/03/2021 16:45

@BerniesMittens same here! I iron when sewing but that's it.

troppibambini6 · 25/03/2021 16:45

I iron everything for six of us. I don't particularly love ironing but I don't like creased clothes. I always scruffy as a child and hated it so I think it's probably down to that...

Wiaa · 25/03/2021 16:46

I barely iron anything, I only iron something if it looks really creased including dcs stuff. Dh irons a lot of his clothes though but just as he needs to wear them. My ds's school jumpers often need an iron but the trousers shirts and polo shirts rarely do. Mil was doing our washing for a few months whilst we had an extension built and she commented on how hardly any of our clothes need to be ironed. I don't hang anything up either

dudsville · 25/03/2021 16:49

A lot of my wardrobe is cotton. Wash one day, iron the next! Music on, glass of wine, I hang everything from a doorway until I'm finished.

dudsville · 25/03/2021 16:50

I mean that I only do this once a week, not that I'm ironing every other day.

hellcatspangle · 25/03/2021 16:51

Well I used to iron pretty much everything, until both adult dc moved back in and I found myself ironing their stuff...I just thought why am I doing this? Especially when half the stuff we wear is under other clothes. I then stopped ironing t shirts and DH boxers as well, I can't believe how much time I used to waste on it.

Tlollj · 25/03/2021 16:59

Depends on the bedding I’ve got one 100% cotton one and that’s a bastard.
Live alone so it’s only my clothes. Not everything just if I think it needs it. Not towels or undies though

TopBitchoftheWitches · 25/03/2021 16:59

Don't iron anything. Cannot be arsed.

2bazookas · 25/03/2021 17:20

I like real linen and always iron it (hot steam iron). I also iron silk shirts (cool,no steam)

Nothing else gets ironed at all.

RampantIvy · 25/03/2021 17:23

You have come to the wrong place to ask for ironing advice Grin
Mumsnetters think it is a badge of honour not to iron. Since lockdown began I have been mainly wearing clothes that don't require ironing, but I do have the odd piece that looks awful if it hasn't been ironed as I hate looking crumpled, and I always iron my pillowcases.

Exhausted4ever · 25/03/2021 17:37

I don't get why people think it's a badge of honour not to iron. I don't iron, because I just can't be bothered, but it's not something I feel worthy of a badge for lol.

Like pps I only iron if I'm sewing, or shirts which thankfully rarely get worn

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 25/03/2021 18:11

I iron all clothes and bedding, not underwear or tea. I dislike creased clothes and wouldn’t go out in something not ironed. You can tell the difference between not ironed and odd crease from wear.

Nearlynotquite · 25/03/2021 18:38

@RampantIvy out of interest, why pillowcases?
I'm not for or against ironing particularly, but I'm interested in reasons why people do it rather than why they don't, I suppose.
Honestly, if I thought my stuff looked/felt better ironed then I'd probably do more of it, but I'm so crap at ironing (I think?) that most items don't look any different, at least not for long. And I don't really know why.
My pillowcases are well stretched over big pillows, so they aren't crumpled.
The only thing I'm quite good at is work shirts and kids polo shirts which is probably why I do those.

OP posts:
hiredandsqueak · 25/03/2021 18:53

I iron all clothes and duvet covers and pillow cases, basically because it encourages me to put the clothes away afterwards. If I didn't iron I'd leave them in the basket and just pull them out to wear. I iron a couple of times a week, generally first thing in the morning, about 6am, listenng to an audiobook.

BasiliskStare · 25/03/2021 18:55

Non iron shirts ( Charles Tywhitt is you friend here - & for avoidance of doubt have no relationship to him or the company ) For day to day are fantastic but they do need a tumble dry

Duvet covers - nope not going to do that - too hard.
Pillow cases I can see but as a pp said if big pillows they sort of work them selves out.

formal shirts and some polo shirts yes can do with an iron.

Lots of things though straight out of tumble dryer and on a hanger really don't need ironing.

Well that is my two tuppence worth

Midlifephoenix · 25/03/2021 18:56

I don't bother. I buy clothes that don't need ironing. My son steams his clothes though.
