Ironing

So, while we're on the subject of disgusting habits and cleaning bathrooms, can I ask, please, how you iron (properly)
And if you do it, why? I only iron school uniforms and work clothes, and then only if I must.

I iron everything barring sheets, towels and underwear.

I find ironing quite soothing, I find piles of ironing quite satisfying, and I like the way it makes things look, and teatowels lying nice and flat in the drawer. It's a good way to get to have dibs on what's on the telly, too! After ironing for 40 odd years, I'm pretty quick at it too. . .

uncomfortablydumb53 · 25/03/2021 14:45

I don't even own an iron
I dry tops on hangers on my airer and only tumble jeans, towels and bedding

BigFatLiar · 25/03/2021 14:46

DH does the ironing (and most of the washing) always has. Does a better job of ironing than I do.

Tinydinosaur · 25/03/2021 14:46

I only.iron if something is wrinkley and we're going somewhere nice. Which is very rarely.

Same4Walls · 25/03/2021 14:47

I don't even own an iron

I might as well not bother for the little it gets used, plus when I need it I can never blooming find it. I used to joke if someone gave me 1 minute to find it in return for a million quid I would not end up a millionaire. Grin

We outsource ironing of our work clothes (though it hasn't been necessary this last year!) If I got caught short in between I'd hang the item on a door and glide over it with the steam mop - this works amazingly!

My ironing is dreadful though. I did some of husband's shirts when I was on ML and he politely asked me to stop!

firstimemamma · 25/03/2021 15:13

I iron DP's uniform and jeans but that's it!

luckylavender · 25/03/2021 15:31

@Same4Walls - if you don't iron your choice. But you can always tell. Don't kid yourself.

AmyLou100 · 25/03/2021 15:32

I iron. I think creased looks so unkempt. But most clothes out of the drier fold nicely without creases. I iron uniforms, work clothing and tops. I like ironing though. Something about ironing out the creases is relaxing to me.

AmyLou100 · 25/03/2021 15:37

I have to agree with this. You can always tell and it's a bit scruffy. Dh and I both do ironing. Do people not iron school uniforms?

Petrarkanian · 25/03/2021 15:37

I've never checked or noticed whether someone else's clothes are ironed.

The only thing I iron is Hamma beads.

ZaraW · 25/03/2021 15:41

It's only on MN that people don't iron unless all your clothing is synthetic? In real life everyone I know does it.

I iron, I feel crap if I wear crumpled clothing.

dementedpixie · 25/03/2021 15:46

Really?
In my life I know few people who iron everything. I have better things to do with my time so only iron shirts and school stuff.

BasiliskStare · 25/03/2021 15:49

@picklemewalnuts - when my father worked in africa - everything had to be ironed because hung out to dry - horrid bugs would creep in, ( this was approx 45 years ago. )

Now I think with being able to order non iron shirts and a tumble drier - not so much ironing needed. We iron some things in this house and the rest just get hung up v quickly. It sort of works Grin

idontlikealdi · 25/03/2021 15:53

I don't iron anything. My MIL irons my bedsheets, she seems to enjoy it.

School shirts got to the ironing place around the corner, nothing I wear needs to be ironed.

I don't think we even have an iron anymore.

Haydugee · 25/03/2021 15:56

I iron everything apart from towels and my underwear.

Bedding just feels so much more luxurious to me when it’s been ironed, it’s worth the effort. Plus I really don’t like my DH or DC looking creased.

Nearlynotquite · 25/03/2021 16:04

The only people I know in real life who iron (apart from my friend with her laundry festooned kitchen) outsource it to cleaners or laundry services.
I've done my googling at there are a few tips on how to do it well, but it still doesn't really answer how to get (say) a pillowcase looking like they do in hotels. I did read about ironing bedsheets on the bed (!!) and folding them in quarters lengthways. I suspect I'm just too cackhanded to do them without trailing them on the floor.
Comforted to hear from other non-ironers here.
Anyone who outsources ironing - how do you expect it to look when you get it back?

I iron too but only if I feel like it. I used to do it once a week but there's no need at the moment. I fold and put away most stuff but some things need ironing IMO and, when they've stacked up, I have a lovely hour to myself looking at the big communal garden at the back of our house and listening to BBC Sounds. In Lockdown it's valuable Me Time. I can definitely tell when people don't iron.

AmyLou100 · 25/03/2021 16:14

I have better things to do with my time so only iron shirts and school stuff.

But why thus only? If there's no difference, then why do it. Not being snarky, just saying that there must be some point of knowing the difference if school shirts must be ironed.

dementedpixie · 25/03/2021 16:17

I do dhs shirts so do the kids ones at the same time. Just a habit I fell into. I'm not going to spend time doing anything else as I dislike ironing

Meowchickameowmeow · 25/03/2021 16:21

I only iron when I'm sewing, I don't mind small pieces of fabric and seams but anything else can stay wrinkly.

Disfordarkchocolate · 25/03/2021 16:23

I rarely iron, just the occasional item.

Most things dry nicely on hangers, especially if they can be hung outside. I look for clothes that don't need ironing.

FudgeFlake · 25/03/2021 16:24

When I was a student I did cleaning in a pretty wealthy private house, the lady had a special pressing machine in her laundry room (it really was a room purely for laundry - the freezers and other stuff that would normally be in a standard utility all had their own rooms too in what can only be described as a service wing!). This machine would do all the bedlinen to hotel standards. There were also two different washing machines, one in the laundry for human clothing etc, and another in the room nearest the door that the gentleman used when he came in from shooting with dirty spaniels that was purely for dog bedding and towels.

ghostyslovesheets · 25/03/2021 16:26

Blimey I possibly don't have better things to do with my time - working single parent of three - but I iron most things - I think creased stuff looks dirty.

I do it once a week - I change the beds, wash then iron the bedding and all the clothes from the week - usually on a Sunday watching a film

ichundich · 25/03/2021 16:31

I only iron shirts and cotton summer dresses. I dry most of my washing on the line and fold it once dry. It doesn't look creased that way. Ironing uses absolute tons of electricity.
