Disgusting things discovered on MN

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 14:34

During my time on MN I have read about some disgusting/unhygienic things that people do on a regular basis.

Examples are:
Letting dogs lick human plates
Washing dog bowls in dishwasher with regular dishes
Sharing bath water (seen this one today!)
Sucking snot out of a baby's nose (I somewhat get it but really think I could never)

What are some vile things you've read about on MN that are seemingly normal to those that post about them?

@LadyDanburysCane

Wait are you meant to close the lid when flushing? Out toilet lid is permanently open, never really thought about what the lid is for

I proved the need for the lid to be closed to DS by putting food dye in the water, closing the lid and flushing. I then opened the lid and showed the coloured splashes on the underside of the lid. He has never left the lid up since!

DH has always been a lid closer so no issues with him 😃

Oooo good idea! Did you put it in the cistern or in the bowl? How much?
Frogartist · 26/03/2021 15:50

As for sponges/flannels: yuk, inless you use a clean (not just rinsed off)one every time you'll just be spreading the dirt/bacteria etc from previous washing sessions round your body again!

dotdashdashdash · 26/03/2021 16:07

I tend to lather hands, then spread through body

yes, same here.

shhsecretsquirrel · 26/03/2021 16:10

Flannels are definitely the most unhygienic thing on this thread. Urgh Envy apart from the loo brush in dishwasher obvs

Tarantallegra · 26/03/2021 16:15

@TeckanandMultra I have still managed to resist all temptation to google dragon butter after that thread

I hate it. I care for someone that insists on only changing them once a week. I try and change them more often but they are really adamant about it and it just feels horrible using it for a week.
Brian9600 · 26/03/2021 16:19

Haha, I do everything on the disgusting list.

Dogs licking plates- free pre-wash, what's the issue?
Dog bowls in the dishwasher- baffled that anyone would object.
Sharing bath water- pretty much every bath I have. When the children were small we'd sometimes all four use one bath of water.
Sucking snot- haven't for years as DS is now 15 and that's a very different prospect Shock

Crikey the histrionics!

Okay let's turn this around, you don't scrub when you wash?? How on earth can you be clean??

LadyDanburysCane · 26/03/2021 17:15

I put it in the bowl to show it was the dirty water being splashed about. I used blue food colouring, quite a bit really, probably about half of one of those small bottles....

Frogartist · 26/03/2021 18:59

ghostfrog I just have very rough hands

Thanks! I hope it will be easy to wipe it off or I'll have to paint the toilet seat blue!;)

Go google how soap works. You’ll be amazed. Wink

Has anyone mentioned sharing an electric toothbrush? I absolutely appreciate that the different brush head come with coloured rings so that everyone in one family can share, but I absolutely could not. Maybe just my hang up.

This is a great idea! I can't stand the lid not being put down before the toilet is flushed 🤢. Luckily my dh has always put the lid down. His family don't though and I have actually asked my pils to put the lid down when they visit (back when we could have visitors!). One perk of lockdown is not having to deal with this issue when guests come round and not having to cope with public toilets. Silver linings an' all that Grin.

As for animal bowls in the dishwasher, I personally find it unpleasant and a bit gross. My cats bowls get washed in their own mini washing up bowl with their own sponge. I discovered a friend of mine puts her cats bowls in the dishwasher. I'm hoping I forget this by the time I can eat at her house again...

What about using an electric toothbrush as a toothbrush and also a vibrator 😆

DH and I share a handle - just pop our own head on. I have a rack that holds the handle and tooth brush tube in the back and our two heads hang at the front. The handle doesn’t go in your mouth so don’t see the problem.
Febo24 · 26/03/2021 20:03

I have to shut my loo seat because the cat climbs in and drinks the water.

🤣

Febo24 · 26/03/2021 20:03

@WiganNorthWest

Anyone pee in the bath?
You've made my night with this.
ghostfrog · 26/03/2021 20:13

Ew I'm sorry but a special washing up bowl and sponge just for the cat bowls sounds even more grim than sticking them in the dishwasher

WiganNorthWest · 26/03/2021 20:22

Um...maybe...once. Saved some space in my wash bag on a work trip and had a lot of time alone in a hotel room to kill.

In reference to the electric toothbrush/vibrator situation

Obviously that's fine!

@LadyDanburysCane fair enough. I can't seem to brush my teeth without water and toothpaste running down my face and hands (hideous, I know) so I wouldn't in good conscience let anyone touch my brush.
